A new take on a classic reggae sound. The change in music production technology in the 1980s opened doors to new sounds and experiments from producers around the world. In Jamaica, producers who built their name on the live studio sound with a drum and bass foundation either adopted to syndrums or full digital drums by the mid-80s, or they dropped out of the game. Producer and melodica player Augustus Pablo was a prolific survivor from the classic reggae era, and he released four new studio albums through Greensleeves between 1986 and 1990, the critical years when the new sound of reggae was finding its feet.

While the two previous Best of UB40 collections neatly divided the band's output between their more political early period and their later, covers-oriented pop success, they were also only ten tracks apiece. The Very Best of UB40 1980-2000 is the first comprehensive single-disc overview of the band's career, and it's a lot more generous at 20 tracks. It isn't arranged chronologically, which actually helps the programming by splitting up the covers over the course of the running order. There's a bit more toughness to the earlier songs, both in the lyrics and the punchier performances. Yet in the end, the sonic differences are subtle enough that casual fans should still be able to enjoy them (unless they only want to hear the band performing reggae-pop versions of oldies they already know).

Bombay Dub Orchestra are not from Bombay, nor are they really a dub act, either, or even an actual orchestra, but the name has been used for the electro-Indian, ambient, chill-out soundscapes and melodies created by British composers and producers Garry Hughes and Andrew T. Mackay, along with mixing engineer Damon Sood. Built around electro beats and Indian instruments, then layered with sweetly flowing string orchestration, the team produces well-crafted and arranged chill-out melodies that feel like they've wandered in from the classical score of a Bollywood movie, only by way of Jamaica; a sort of sunny version of late-night zone-out-and-float-downstream music…

Suns of Arqa have materialised as a musical collective, combining the ancient Hindustani raga systems with Piobaireachd and Nyabinghi roots drumming. They appear intermittently at the seasonal festivals and sacred ritual spaces, where they are a vehicle for the positive raising of vibration, connecting with both the sensory and infinite worlds, for the on going evolution of all sentient beings.
Opening with the wonderful psychedelia of Lennon & McCartney's "Tomorrow Never Knows", "Shabda" by Suns Of Arqa moves through the familiar territories of dub, ragas and world music in a conscious and direct manner. Tracks 2 and 3 build up the hypnotic tension before "Through The Gate We Go" drops into some heavy 90s breakbeat dub…

Lumino’s music is medicine, an obsession, and his way of knowing himself. It is boundless in form, and strangely reminiscent of times outside human existence. This album pushed him forward by pulling him back to center. The unique expressions of each song are as many as the pairs of ears who would listen to it just because music is a personal experience that remains, somehow, absolutely universal. So, we invite you to let a dear old friend speak to you too! She will take you on a journey, but the only person who can find out where, is you.
