The new album from Der Musikalische Garten features no fewer than four world premieres and once again offers fascinating insights into the expressive diversity of the 18th century. The focus is on three secular cantatas by Carl Heinrich Graun and the world premiere recording of an undiscovered overture by his brother Johann Gottlieb Graun. Soprano Isabel Schicketanz impresses in the vocal works with technical brilliance and sensitive text interpretation, supported by the lively orchestral sound of the ensemble Der Musikalische Garten, which achieves enthusiasm and esprit with a small ensemble.

Exploring the myriad possibilities of Bach on the piano, Beatrice Rana engages in intimate and illuminating dialogue with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta in four of the composer’s keyboard concertos: BWV1052 in D minor, BWV1053 in E major, BWV1054 in D major, and BWV1056 in F minor. For the New York Times, Rana’s distinction as an interpreter of Bach lies in “preternatural sensitivity, sophistication and control, along with a touch of magic.” She describes the composer as “an important figure in my life … My piano studies began when I was very young and Bach was there from the very start.” At the age of nine she played the F minor concerto, BWV1056, in her first public concert with orchestra. 20 years later she and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta toured these four concertos before taking them into the recording studio.

The Arundel Choirbook is one of the most significant surviving collections of English polyphony from the early 16th century. As well as containing invaluable sources for masses by Robert Fayrfax and Nicholas Ludford, it also contains many works by lesser known and anonymous composers of the period. The Arundel or Lambeth Choirbook is celebrating its 500th anniversary (Arundel College in Sussex was founded in 1380 and dissolved in 1544), and it is fitting that the Iken Scholars has selected a sequence of pieces by anonymous composers (known as the Lambeth Anonymous) that are receiving their world premiere recordings.

The Kanneh-Masons are seven British siblings, aged 15 to 29, who play violin, piano, or cello and have risen to international fame as one of the most remarkable musical families of today. Trained largely at London’s Royal Academy of Music (with Jeneba at the Royal College of Music), they have won numerous awards, appeared on major broadcasts such as the Baftas (2018), Royal Variety Show (2019), and Strictly Come Dancing (2020), and released acclaimed albums including Carnival (2020) and River of Music (2025). Raised in Nottingham by Stuart Mason and Dr. Kadiatu Kanneh, their story has inspired books, documentaries, and award-winning TV specials.

The Greek duo of lyra player Sokratis Sinopoulos and pianist Yann Keerim’s first studio statement is a deep well of inspired musical dialogues that cross the idiomatic space between European folk tradition and chamber-jazz seamlessly. Bartók’s six “Romanian Folk Dances” appear in newly shaped guises throughout the album, with Sokratis’s painterly lyra playing setting a lyrical counterpoint against Yann’s in turns rhythmically propulsive and quietly thoughtful accompaniment. This is the first time the duo is heard distilled from Sokratis’s acclaimed quartet (albums Eight Winds and Metamodal) and their conversations interlock gracefully, always responsive to one another and with a keen sense of space and atmosphere. Their own duo elaborations join the Bartók studies unnoticeably, as everything becomes connected by the pair’s fluid expression. Recorded in Athens, in February 2024, the album was produced by Manfred Eicher.

Talk Talk began life as a slavishly derivative, Duran Duran-styled new romantic synth pop band, as their debut, The Party's Over, clearly shows. Much of the album seems to attempt to recreate Duran Duran's debut, but even with their most blatant rip-offs, like the single "Talk Talk," they do it with a naïve charm that makes for some really enjoyable music, even if it isn't particularly innovative or groundbreaking.

World-renowned pianist Mitsuko Uchida releases a new album of Beethoven's final three piano sonatas, Op. 109-110-111. Recorded live at Suntory Hall in Japan (October 2025), this marks her second and final recording of these works, following her first in 2006. Widely regarded as a peerless interpreter of Beethoven, Uchida follows her acclaimed recording of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, which won a Gramophone Award in 2022 and was nominated for a Grammy in 2023. Composed between 1820 and 1822 alongside his Missa solemnis, Beethoven’s final piano sonatas represent the pinnacle of his writing for the instrument, transcending traditional sonata form, through profound introspection and emotional journeys from struggle to serenity.

On the face of it, Elmer Gantry’s Velvet Opera should have been a shoo-in for success. A popular, dynamic live act who were equally at home in the studio, their early recordings were bursting with wit, intelligence, melody, style and, perhaps more than anything else, a sense of fun.

Alexa Tarantino’s fifth studio album The Roar and the Whisper is a spellbinding new chapter in the jazz musician’s evolution. The saxophonist, flutist, composer, and educator has long been lauded for her poise and precision—“a one-woman wrecking crew,” as Wynton Marsalis calls her. Now, Blue Engine Records captures the full breadth of her artistry: from spirited, up-tempo improvisations to intimate, ethereal ballads.

The album functions as a follow-up collection gathering rare maxi-single versions, alternative versions, and modern remixes of his classic synth-pop and Euro-disco hits. It was distributed as a CD compilation, primarily circulating through boutique European dance music outlets and collector platforms like Discogs.

Without Brian Eno, Roxy Music immediately became less experimental, yet they remained adventurous, as Stranded illustrates. Under the direction of Bryan Ferry, Roxy moved toward relatively straightforward territory, adding greater layers of piano and heavy guitars. Even without the washes of Eno's synthesizers, Roxy's music remains unsettling on occasion, yet in this new incarnation, they favor more measured material, whether it's the reflective "A Song for Europe" or the shifting textures of "Psalm." Even the rockers, such as the surging "Street Life" and the segmented "Mother of Pearl," are distinguished by subtle songwriting that emphasizes both Ferry's tortured glamour and Roxy's increasingly impressive grasp of sonic detail.
