For nearly a decade, Melbourne's Mildlife have built a reputation as one of modern psychedelic music's most compelling live acts. Blending cosmic jazz, space disco, Krautrock, psychedelic funk and vintage electronics, the quartet transform concert halls, clubs and festivals into immersive, ever-evolving performances driven by instinct, improvisation and deep-pocket groove.

Willie Bobo's only LP for Blue Note came at a point well past the label's heyday, when crossover was its primary focus. Hence Tomorrow Is Here has a pronounced '70s R&B/funk feel, with synthesizers, envelope followers, electric pianos, guitars and occasional strings interwoven with Bobo's steady Latin congas, timbales and self-effacing vocals. But there are a few gems to be found here - one in particular. The leadoff track "Suitcase Full Of Dreams" is a great, haunting, Latin-accented song about a journeyman musician's life on the road that should have become a standard but is now almost completely forgotten. Karma's Reggie Andrews sits in on keyboards to give the record its contemporary sound; the other participants are L.A. sessionmen. Bobo's engaging personality, the injected Latin element, and "Suitcase" are what makes this otherwise dated record come alive.

The main reason to purchase this previously unissued set from the late '60s is not for the rhythmic themes (which use fairly basic chord sequences) or even the solos of organist John Patton (who never does escape entirely from the shadow of Jimmy Smith), but for the somewhat out-of-place avant-garde outbursts by Harold Alexander (on tenor and flute) who often takes improvisations that go completely outside; his squeals on "Boogaloo Boogie" are a real surprise and he may very well be the reason that this music was not put out at the time. Otherwise this is a routine set of commercial late-'60s jazz/funk.

"VA - Funky Groove!" (1999) is a notable promotional jazz-funk compilation. The CD album was co-released in Greece by Blue Note Records, Minos-EMI, and the prominent Greek music magazine Jazz & Τζαζ.

Resonance Records goes out of its way again to unearth yet another significant chapter in jazz history, and once again, it's one that relatively few fans have ever heard. This performance of Jaco Pastorius' Word of Mouth Big Band was captured during George Wein's Kool Jazz Festival at Avery Fisher Hall. It was broadcast on NPR's Jazz Alive program, but this double disc contains the entire performance, with more than 40 minutes of additional music.

Released as part of the acclaimed archival series on Rapster Records, Virgin Ubiquity II: Unreleased Recordings 1976-1981 unearths a stellar batch of lost gems from vibraphone godfather Roy Ayers' most prolific creative period. Discovered during an extensive vault search through his classic Polydor studio reels, this 13-track collection bridges the sweet spot where jazz improvisation meets raw funk, disco, and soulful grooves. Featuring standout cuts like the uplifting disco-funk workout "Holiday," the synth-heavy spoken word groove "I Am Your Mind (Part 2)," deep instrumental fusion jams like "Funk In The Hole" and "Liquid Love," and an early demo of the classic "Sunshine," this compilation captures Ayers and his stellar backing band operating at the absolute peak of their late-70s and early-80s groove masterclass.

Released in 1987 on Blue Note Records, Inferno represents a dramatic stylistic departure for French guitar prodigy Biréli Lagrène. Having emerged early in his career as a Gypsy jazz prodigy in the tradition of Django Reinhardt, Lagrène fully embraced high-voltage, plugged-in jazz-rock fusion on this electrifying late-80s date. Featuring a stellar lineup of fusion heavyweights—including bassist Victor Bailey (Weather Report), saxophonist Bill Evans, keyboardist Cliff Carter, and an extraordinary rotation of legendary drummers (Dave Weckl, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Danny Gottlieb, and Pierre Moerlen)—the album sizzles with fiery electric guitar leads, slap bass grooves, synth textures, and tight funk rhythms. Highlighted by the explosive title track "Inferno," the synth-funk groove of "Rock It," and the soulful lyricism of "Ballade," the recording displays Lagrène's astonishing technique and adaptability across modern electric fusion landscapes.

Known for his mariachi-inspired easy listening sound, trumpeter Herb Alpert is one of the most successful instrumental performers in pop history. He is also one of the entertainment industry's canniest businessmen, having co-founded A&M Records – a label that ranks among the most prosperous artist-owned companies ever established – with partner Jerry Moss. Originally recorded in 1970 and reissued on CD in 2011 by Think! Records, Exciting Flute is a blazing, groove-heavy artifact of early Japanese jazz-funk led by visionary flutist Toshiaki Yokota. Right before founding his legendary psych-jazz ensemble The Beat Generation (famous for the holy grail album 'Flute Adventure'), Yokota applied his fiery,overblown technique and Herbie Mann-influenced virtuosity to high-octane instrumental arrangements of 1960s pop, rock, and soul classics. Driven by heavy drum breaks, driving basslines, and psychedelic fuzz accents, the album transforms pop gems like Ides of March's "Vehicle," Shocking Blue's "Venus," George Baker Selection's "Little Green Bag," and Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild" into frantic, funk-drenched floorburners. A vital bridge between Japanese pop-instrumental jazz and the burgeoning underground jazz-rock scene.

A much-needed look at an overlooked side of the genius of Quincy Jones – not his jazz work, not his productions for famous soul artists, but instead his huge legacy of soundtrack material – a part of Q's career that really took off in the 60s! By the time he started working in films, Jones had already had a decade under his belt as one of the hippest arrangers, leaders, and composers in jazz – and the film business really respected those talents, and allowed Quincy to bring some really fresh styles into play – modes that really opened up the vibe of American cinema, and also paved the way for the funky styles of the 70s! As that decade approached, Jones left behind the cinema to take on some more higher-profile records of his own – but all the charms of those great albums can be found here at their roots – in this stunning collection of soundtrack material, some of which has never been on CD.
