They come from somewhere in Outer Space: Les Robots! Programmed to play instrumental music. Programmed by who?! Nobody knows for sure, but some say by legendary producer Joe Meek himself, and that’s plausible considering a lot of their tunes. But make no mistake, these mechanical men have more than one musical-preset to serve our human ears. Come closer and you can hear sounds that are reminiscent of The Shadows, The Ventures, Terry Terauchi, Booker T & the MG’s, Link Wray, 60’s cinema soundtracks and way more.

Over the course of several '60s albums on the Liberty subsidiary, Dolton, the Ventures became the most popular instrumental combo in the U.S.; they would later go on to international fame in the '70s and '80s as pop icons in Japan and Europe. Staying consistent with other globally appealing theme albums like The Ventures' Beach Party and Super Psychedelics, the band opt for a mod, go-go spin on 1966's Wild Things! Along with high-profile covers like "Wild Thing," "Summer in the City," and "The Work Song," some respectable originals like "Wild Trip," and "Fuzzy and Wild" are also included.

Sublime Frequencies is honored to present the first ever retrospective of Phương Tâm, the groundbreaking Saigon teenager who became one of the first singers to perform and record rock and roll in 1960s Vietnam. By chance in early 2020, Hannah Hà (USA) learned that her mother, Phương Tâm, had once been a famous young singer, performer and recording artist at the heart of Saigon’s music scene in the early 1960s. The family had heard some mention of their mom as a singer at the time, but the extent of her legacy and the many songs she had recorded came as a big surprise. Further investigations soon led Hannah to producer Mark Gergis, compiler of Saigon Rock and Soul (2010, Sublime Frequencies), enlisting him to join her on a journey of discovery and recovery. The result is this essential document of Phuong Tam’s brief but prolific career, and at the same time, reuniting the long-lost music with its singer.

The Reverb Syndicate is an almost exclusively instrumental "Spy-Fi" surf band from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada who have been playing since 2006. Their music is of "soundtracks to 1960s spy films that don’t exist". They toured England and Scotland in 2008 and again in 2012, and have played at the 2007 and 2010 Ottawa Bluesfest. They have released four studio albums; Operation: Jet Set! (2006), Sputnik A-Go-Go (2007), Mondo Cacti (2011) and Odyssey (2015).

You ready to catch a monster grave? Surf on this 1964 classic from the venerable Vee-Jay label! While this album has been reissued before, this is the first time it’s been cut all-analog straight from the original tapes. And there are some real treats to savor in all their pure sonic glory, like “There’s a Creature in the Surfer’s Lagoon,” which The Cramps must have heard a time or three. As always with these anonymous Halloween concept albums (see our Frankie Stein and the Ghouls releases), speculation has run rampant as to who’s playing on Monster Surfing Time; suspicion this time falls on legendary “Games People Play” guitarist Joe South, who penned five of the numbers here and whose first hit was, after all, 1958’s “The Purple People Eater Meets the Witch Doctor.” So we’re gonna go with him as a likely suspect. We’re pressing this one in bloody pumpkin vinyl limited to 900 copies!

The Honeys Collection Review by John Bush
Fans of the Beach Boys will definitely be interested in this collection from the Honeys, a girl group trio including Brian Wilson's wife Marilyn, plus her sister Diane, and their cousin. Signed to Capitol, thanks to Wilson, most of the Honeys sessions were supervised by Wilson himself, occasionally with Capitol's in-house producer Nik Venet. The Honeys Collection brings together 26 tracks covering the group's early- to mid-'60s singles (and several backing vocal dates on records by other artists).

The only album by the group managed by Marley Wilson, the father of the Beach Boys! Marley Wilson, the father of the Wilson brothers of the Beach Boys and the manager of his sons, reissued the only album by The Sunrays, the group that debuted in Southern California, with the addition of rare single recordings. The Sunrays are often regarded as a "subgroup of the Beach Boys" because of the relationship between the Beach Boys and Marley Wilson, but Rick Henn, who played drums and sang lead vocals and wrote some hit songs, later became a songwriter, arranger, etc., and is a talented member of the Sunrays. The members of the group are also very talented, and I hope you will take this opportunity to pay attention to their talents. Commentary: Toru Ueshiba

Rhino closes its five-volume rock instrumentals series with an 18-track outing devoted to surf guitar. This fast-paced, prickly, and frequently exciting form may not be among the most diversified structurally, but if does offer some surging playing from its practitioners. They range from founding father Dick Dale to its most popular bands, the Surfaris, Belairs, Ventures, and Chantays. While not particularly a hardcore surf collection, this disc certainly outlines its virtues, and the tunes were long enough to display guitar proficiency, but short enough to prevent self-indulgence and repetition.
