Released in 2011 by Big Beat Records and compiled by Howard Williams, Nippon Guitars - Instrumental Surf, Eleki & Tsugaru Rock 1966-1974 is the first major Western retrospective dedicated to Japanese guitar innovator Takeshi Terauchi. Widely celebrated as a primary architect of Japan's mid-1960s Eleki (electric guitar) boom, Terauchi revolutionized instrumental music by combining rapid-fire surf picking, custom electronic echo effects, and rock and roll rhythms with traditional Japanese pentatonic melodies and folk song arrangements. Fronting two legendary backing bands, The Blue Jeans and The Bunnys, Terauchi's fierce fretwork moves effortlessly from hard-edged surf and fuzz-laden rock freak-outs to funky boogaloo grooves and electrified Tsugaru shamisen adaptations. Across twenty-five brilliantly remastered tracks spanning nearly an hour and twenty minutes, cuts like Ganroku Hanami Odori, Rising Guitar, Let's Go Boogaloo, and Tsugaru Eleki Bushi capture the fiery technique, sonic invention, and East-meets-West instrumental crossover that made Terauchi a global guitar legend.
