Still Waters is the twenty-first studio album by the pop group the Bee Gees, released on 10 March 1997 in the UK by Polydor, and on 6 May the same year in the US by A&M. As if they finally realized that they couldn't quite compete with contemporary musical fashions any more, the Bee Gees moved firmly into "mature" territory with Still Waters. However, they are canny enough to realize that they shouldn't abandon the frothy disco that made them superstars in the late '70s – they should merely temper it with measured rhythms and tasteful melodies. Consequently, nothing on Still Waters is infectious, but it is pleasant, and while only a handful of singles stand out – "I Could Not Love You More" is a sweet ballad – it is still a fine, professional effort from these consummate professionals.

‘Brutal Youth’ (1994) is the first album since ‘Blood And Chocolate’ (1986) Costello recorded with the Attractions with Nick Lowe featuring on half of the album. Elvis picked up an electric guitar and began writing rock n’ roll songs again. The result, ‘Brutal Youth’, an impressive collection of rock and pop that that proves that Costello hadn’t forgotten how to write a loud tune and to being one of the greatest lyricists in rock music. The album features some great rockers like “Pony St.”, “13 Steps Lead Down”, “Just About Glad” and “My Science Fiction Twin” are all loud and robust songs that sound like classic Elvis. The piano ballad “Favourite Hour” might just be the album’s highlight (or is it one of 15 highlights?) and a beautiful way to close the album.

Santana is the primary exponent of Latin-tinged rock, particularly due to its combination of Latin percussion (congas, timbales, etc.) with bandleader Carlos Santana's distinctive, high-pitched lead guitar playing. The group was the last major act to emerge from the psychedelic San Francisco music scene of the 1960s and it enjoyed massive success at the end of the decade and into the early '70s. The musical direction then changed to a more contemplative and jazzy style as the band's early personnel gradually departed, leaving the name in the hands of Carlos Santana, who guided the group to consistent commercial success over the next quarter-century…

The non-LP single "Scene Through the Eye of a Lens" b/w "Gypsy Woman" not withstanding, Music in a Doll's House (1968) is the debut full-length release from the earliest incarnation of Family, featuring Roger Chapman (harmonica/tenor sax/vocals), Rick Grech (violin/ cello/bass guitar/vocals), Rob Townsend (percussion/drums), John "Charlie" Whitney (guitar/pedal steel guitar/keyboards), and Jim King (harmonica/keyboards/soprano sax/tenor sax/vocals). Their highly original sound has often been compared to Traffic, which may be in part due to the production skills of Jimmy Miller and Dave Mason, the latter also contributing the organic and rootsy rocker "Never Like This."

J.J. Cale drifts toward a more pop approach on this album, starting with the lead-off track, "City Girls," which could almost but not quite be a hit single. The usual blues and country shuffle approach is in effect, but Audie Ashworth's production is unusually sharp, the playing has more bite than usual, and Cale, whose vocals are for the most part up in the mix, sounds more engaged. It's not clear, however, that this is an improvement over his usual laidback approach, and, in any case, it shouldn't be over-emphasized – this is still a J.J. Cale album, with its cantering tempos and single-note guitar runs. It's just that, when you have a style as defined as Cale's, little movements in style loom larger.

Dmitry Masleev offers a highly personal diptych with the Dies irae theme running throughout. The pianist serves up these formidable pages with racy, sober, elegant playing, and virtuosity giving way to sensuality and crystal-clear lyricism. One one side we have Liszt's Totentanz (which saw him triumph at the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition) and Rhapsodie espagnole (adapted for piano and string orchestra by his mentor Petukhov) on the other is Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (his composer of choice). The album closes with the Adagio from Marcello's Oboe Concerto, arranged for keyboard by Bach, a kind of vision of heaven after hell.

Vibrant and urgently lyrical playing, possessed of a degree of personality that you would never guess from the bark-bread of the disc's artwork.

For their latest album, recorded live at the Reitstadel in Neumarkt, Christian Gerhaher and his long-time duo-partner, Gerold Huber, have revisited the songs of the great Romantic composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). Yet it is not their first time: on their debut album in 2002 you´ll already find the ‘Four Serious Songs’ Op. 121, and in 2017 they released their version of ‘Romances from L. Tieck´s Magelone’, Op. 33. However, with this album, they bring single songs and cycles to the fore that testify to an intense striving by Brahms to create a new ‘folk tune’. Embedded into social changes of the 19th century, Brahms here tries to establish the art song as a reflection of its own imagined history as well as a reminiscence and portrayal of a naturalness gradually becoming lost during the rise of the modern world – similar to the ambivalence between tradition and progress, noticeable in his instrumental works.

Recorded in 1973-1974, Mirage was one of the finest albums of the 1970s by Animals front man Eric Burdon. The soundtrack for a proposed United Artists film with the Vietnam War as its subject matter, the music recorded by Burdon such as Dragon Lady, River of Blood, Mind Arc and Driftin / Geronimos Last Stand was some of the finest of his career. Exploring the genres of rock, psychedelia and African beats, the sessions also saw Burdon record the song Mirage, written by Jimi Hendrix on the night he died. Sadly, first the film and latterly a proposed double album release by Atlantic Records were shelved and the Mirage album and sessions were consigned to the archives.
