Period-instrument ensemble L'Arpa Festante gives new life to neglected instrumental and choral works from the Baroque to the Romantic eras. The group has recorded for various German labels. L'Arpa Festante is a durable survivor among German historical instrument groups, having been founded in 1983 by violinist Michi Gaigg. She remained its director and concertmaster until 1995. The group was sometimes known as the Barockorchester L'Arpa Festante ("Baroque Orchestra L'Arpa Festante") or even BOLAF, but since its repertory expanded forward into the Classical and Romantic eras, this has been used less often. The name L'Arpa Festante comes from that of a cantata by Giovanni Battista Maccioni and means The Festive Harp; that work had its premiere in 1653 as part of the inauguration ceremonies for what would eventually become the Bavarian State Opera. In its earlier years, the group focused on lesser-known works of the German Baroque, especially those by members of the Bach family.

Since its founding, TRIO 1790 has become the leading piano trio in Germany to perform the music of the classical period on the instruments of that period. The year 1790 marks the mid-point in the ensemble’s repertoire, which ranges from the earliest piano trios of about 1760 to the end of the Viennese Classical period around 1820.

The symphonies date from a more mature period of Darius Milhaud compositional life and confronts the listener with music he or she probably didn't expect if one is familiar with the more bizarre, witty, early music with its many influences by light music, like Le Boeuf sur le Toit and La Creation du Monde. The sixth symphony of Milhaud is definitively his greatest. It contains two slow and two fast movements. The slow movements (2/3rd of the music) are of an astonishing beauty! This music of wide open spaces is full of calmness, austerity, clarity, with beautiful changing harmonies and slowly spiralling melodies. The fast movements make a lively contrast to this.

Dutch composer Johan Wagenaar is considered post-romantic, but this designation is appropriate only insofar as it applies to the time period in which he lived. Otherwise, Wagenaar's music was just straight up romantic, sounding largely like Richard Wagner but with not as dense a scoring palette. In this respect, his music is more like Brahms or Berlioz. Sometimes Wagenaar is compared to Richard Strauss, but this projection can be a little confusing as the ingredients in Wagenaar's dish are often part Wagner and even part Dvorák; the most significant thing about his fare, though, is that it doesn't taste quite like anything else.

The two long works are very much worth hearing, and the whole recording is a treat. The pianist is very good, and more power to her in bringing out the works of Ries and other composers, many recognized in their day but since fallen into obscurity. There is much neglected 19th century music that deserves to be heard. Ries is fully comparable to Mendelssohn, Grieg, and others in the "standard" repertoire.

As is evident in these works, Børresen was a highly talented Danish composer. His first symphony bears some resemblance to Tchaikovsky's Sixth, in particular in the last movement that ends quietly like Tchaikovsky's. However, it is an independent, assured symphony that is well worth hearing. Indeed, after listening to it several times, it is difficult to understand why this tuneful and highly likeable work is not played regularly in concerts anymore. Ole Schmidt and the Saarbrücken orchestra certainly make a strong case for the music.

The two piano concertos of Dmitry Shostakovich may be treated as rare examples of light humor in Shostakovich's output, which requires connecting the mordant Concerto for piano, trumpet, and orchestra in C minor, Op. 35, to the more genuinely humorous Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major, Op. 102. Many performers, naturally enough, connect the two in some way, but Russian pianist Valentina Igoshina takes a different approach: she divorces the two concertos quite thoroughly. In the Concerto No. 1 she emphasizes the manic quality of the music.

"The main attraction on this disc is the Berio orchestral arrangement of the Clarinet Sonata op.120/1. Like Schoenberg, it’s a harmonically and melodically “straight” transcription, not a modern re-imagining of the work. Berio, no stranger to orchestrations and adaptations - Puccini’s Turandot, works by Schubert, Mahler, and Verdi - tackled this last major work of Brahms’ for reasons we don’t know. Iosif Raiskin speculates that the tinges of Mahler in late Brahms may have been a reason for the Mahler-loving Berio. Be that as it may, the result is a wonderfully graceful Brahms Clarinet Concerto.

Musical institutions have their funny ideas, and the quirk of the Prague Conservatoire in the 1880s was that if you were an instrumentalist you couldn't be a composer, too (evidently no one had told them about Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin et al). At his father's insistence Léhar was enrolled as a violinist, but his real interest lay in composition. He took a few secret lessons from Fibich and had the opportunity to play his D minor sonata to Dvorak, who urged him to give up the violin and switch to the composition classes. But Léhar senior was adamant and Lèhar is to be considered as practically a self-taught composer.
