Nightmares have never sounded so beautiful! Swedish grandeurs of melancholic heaviness, Katatonia, return with Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State, set for release on June 6, 2025 via Napalm Records. Once again, the Stockholm-based unit masterfully navigates the tightrope act between nocturnal darkness and Scandinavian despair while subtly weaving a sense of hope into the listener’s heart. Since emerging in the early nineties, Katatonia has projected a beacon of light for the forgotten and the lonely ones, offering solace to those willing to lose themselves in the band’s immersive soundscapes. From their roots in death-doom metal to the post-metal entity they embody today, their art remains as haunting as ever. Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State marks the next step in Katatonia’s evolution, building upon the foundation of their previous album, Sky Void of Stars (2023)…

Two welcome changes in style made Blue Valentine a fresh listening experience for Tom Waits fans. First, Waits alters the instrumentation, bringing in electric guitar and keyboards and largely dispensing with the strings for a more blues-oriented, hard-edged sound. Second, though his world view remains fixed on the lowlifes of the late night, he expands beyond the musings of the barstool philosopher who previously had acted as the first-person character of most of his songs. When Waits does use the first-person, it's to write a "Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis," not the figure most listeners had associated with the singer himself. The result is a broadening of subject matter, a narrative discipline that makes most of the tunes story songs, and a coherent framing for Waits' typically colorful and intriguing imagery…

A 1971 live recording, from when Ella Fitzgerald was still at the peak of her vocal powers, Ella à Nice isn't one of the vocalist's all-time greatest live recordings, but it's a very nice set placing her in the company in which she felt most comfortable, a simple piano/bass/drums trio led by her longtime musical partner, Tommy Flanagan. Most of the set list's time is taken up by themed medleys such as "Aspects of Duke," "The Bossa Scene," and "The Many Faces of Cole Porter" that are perfectly nice but, as medleys tend to be, a little disappointing. One would rather hear Ella work her magic on the entirety of "The Girl From Ipanema" or "Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me" than be teased with a verse and chorus. On the other hand, the opening "Night and Day" is simply outstanding. Opening slowly with an extended vamp by Flanagan and bassist Frank DeLaRosa…

Founded in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1968 - Disbanded in 1981. Originally born as a German-British band, the music of Message oscillates between a substantial heavy rock and a nice folk rock articulated around a range of keyboards arrangements. With a combination of compelling rhythms, first rate compositions and strong playing, Message come up with a winner this time. Murdoch continues his quirky experiments with vibrato-tremolo heavy guitar sound. It adds much of the needed distinction to the whole affair. And there's a greater sense of exploration this time round, making it all feel more "progressive".

Al Stewart was born on September 5, 1945 in Greenock, a small town west of Glasgow. Music became the center of his life at an early age. He bought his first guitar from future Police guitarist Andy Summers, and King Crimson founder Robert Fripp gave him guitar lessons. In 1967 Al released his first album "Bedsitter Images" on CBS. With his fifth long player "Past, Present & Future" the American market discovered the Scottish bard. Stewart combined historical and contemporary events in his lyrics, enriching them with quotations from film and literature. His references to Nostradamus caused a stir. Star producer Alan Parsons (Pink Floyd, Steve Harley…) took over Al Stewart's studio direction and produced with him the million-selling albums "Modern Times", "Year Of The Cat" and "Time Passages" between 1975 and 1978.

It is mighty, mighty hard to believe, but this famed duets album–which went to #1 on the country charts and #26 on the pop charts and garnered a Gold Record–has never been issued on CD outside of Japan, and even there only in the late '90s on a limited run. This was a love album par excellence, as the two stars had just gotten married weeks prior to the record's release in 1973; interestingly, though Kris Kristofferson, fresh from recording his country chart-topper "Why Me," was the bigger star at the time, Full Moon really played to Rita Coolidge's strengths, as it was produced by her long-time producer David Anderle and set its songs in a higher key more suited to her dreamy vocals. The album scored a huge hit with Kristofferson's "A Song I'd Like to Sing," and followed that up with a smash version of Tom Jans' "Loving Arms;" the duo's rendition of Kristofferson's "From the Bottle to the Bottom" also won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.

This first volume of the collected original compositions of David “Dawg” Grisman is comprised of works written between 1963 and 1975, compiled chronologically in the order in which they were written. These performances were selected by the composer and include eight previously unissued tracks featuring David with Vassar Clements, Jerry Garcia, Bill Keith, Tony Rice, Frank Vignola, Clarence White and many others. In a March 1996 concert review, a Chicago Tribune critic described Grisman's "dawg" music as being among "the most important innovations in American music. By blending the exuberant spirit of bluegrass, the inspired melodies of classic American pop, the improvisatory techniques of instrumental jazz and even the plaintive gestures of turn of the century Klezmer, David Grisman has created a distinctive form of American music and lifted it to the level of high art."

Everything that could be desired in a historically informed performance of J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos is presented in Philip Pickett's brilliant set with the New London Consort, released in 1993 on L'Oiseau Lyre. This version with period instruments and an ensemble of a size according to Baroque norms is much more than a dry run-through of these beloved works. It is a clever and highly expressive re-creation of Bach's most popular concertos, re-imagined through the artistic and philosophical connections and conventions that likely were found in them by Bach's contemporaries, most probably by Bach and the Margrave of Brandenburg himself.

This release comprises both a symphony and rarely recorded opera overtures by Dvořák. The chief conductor of the orchestra, Finnish maestro Pietari Inkinen, continues the Dvořák Cycle begun under the baton of Karel Mark Chichon. The Second Symphony, composed when Dvořák was 24, was certainly no masterpiece, neither was its revised version. Nevertheless, it is an extraordinary testament to Dvořák’s talent since it clearly bears his stamp, even though it shows the influence of others. “This man has more ideas than all of us put together”, Brahms said in appreciation of Dvořák’s output. This is certainly borne out when listening to the Second Symphony.
