After four albums, Budgie had achieved moderate success in the U.K. with their unique combination of Black Sabbath heaviness, progressive rock flashes, and bizarre sense of humor. But 1975's Bandolier found the band pursuing a more conventional rock sound with a noticeable funk influence. This is most apparent on the guitar-scratching "I Can't See My Feelings" and the finger-snapping "Who Do You Want for Your Love?," featuring a slow groove topped with vocalist Burke Shelley's soulful wailing. While the riff-heavy "Breaking All the House Rules" and the amusing "Napoleon Bona Part 1 & 2" hark back to the band's early days, change was on the horizon. Budgie's creative spark was remarkably absent from subsequent releases for new label A&M, marking Bandolier as the last album of the band's golden age.

Smooth and soulful club from the mighty Capitol Records – one of the few major labels to really understand a groove at the end of the 70s! The 2CD package is a wonderful tribute to the hipper soul coming out of Capitol at the time – a set that features some hits, some album tracks, and a fair bit of rarities that we've never seen on CD before – some lesser-known club cuts that sit beautifully here next to the bigger names in the collection. But big or small, the artists here are all pretty darn great – much more soul artists heading for the clubs in the late 70s than quickie disco acts just looking for a buck. The collection features 31 tracks in all – including a few non-Capitol cuts – with tracks that include "A Little Bit Of Love" by Gentle Persuasion, "Expressway To Your Heart" by Margo Thunder, "Sophisticated Lady" by Natalie Cole, "Windstorm" by Gloria Jones, "One Thing On My Mind" by Evie Sands, "Surrender" by Barrett Strong, "Do It Good" by Taste Of Honey, "I'm Back For More" by Tavares, "Save Your Love For Me" by Donna Washington, "Conscience" by Sun, "Party In Me" by Gene Dunlap, "Our Love Is Insane" by Desmond Child, "I'm Going Through Changes Now" by Brown Sugar, "Southern Girl (live)" by Maze, "Adventures In Paradise" by Minnie Riperton, "Man Up In The Sky" by Barrett Strong, "Positive Forces" by Tavares, "Sixty Thrills A Minute" by Mystic Merlin, "Street Corner" by Ashford & Simpson, "We All Need Love" by Troiano, "Annie Mae" by Natalie Cole, "Don't Tie Me Down" by Brown Sugar, and "Ooh Child" by Charles Jackson. © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

While Jonathan Richman has recorded for lots of different record labels over the years, both big and small, any fan of his music has to acknowledge the smarts and vision of the tiny Berserkley label, who for many years before the notion of "indie rock" had gained currency were willing to give Richman and his unusual (many would say "strange") musical perspective free rein at a time when he sounded not eccentric but downright freakish. Roadrunner, Roadrunner: The Berserkley Collection culls most of the high points from the five albums Richman and the various versions of his group the Modern Lovers recorded for Berserkley in the 1970s, from the bracing proto-punk of the first Modern Lovers set (recorded in 1973, but unreleased until Berserkley took a chance on the tapes in 1976) to the willfully child-like songs and structures of 1979's Back in Your Life. Offering healthy samplings for each album, this set does an admirable job of tracing the evolution of Richman's style through his first decade, as he moved from teen angst into an innocence that might seem fey if it weren't so passionate and sincere. If you're looking for a detailed introduction to Jonathan Richman's formative era, Roadrunner, Roadrunner hits all the high points, and does a fine job of summarizing a vital era in the life of an influential artist. And just try to imagine what his music and career might have been like if Warner Bros. had actually released that Modern Lovers album they recorded in 1973.

Two CDs. Hot Wax Records was a soul and R&B record label founded in 1968 by the legendary songwriting and production team Holland-Dozier-Holland after their departure from Motown Records. Alongside Invictus Records (their other imprint), Hot Wax allowed them to continue creating music independently, with full creative and financial control. • Hot Wax specialized in vibrant, richly produced soul music with a strong pop sensibility - very much an extension of the signature Motown sound but often edgier and funkier. It became a major player in early 1970s R&B. • Some of it's most notable artists and releases include Honey Cone ("Want Ads," "Stick-Up") The 8th Day ("She's Not Just Another Woman") Flaming Ember ("Westbound #9"). This collection bring together all the most treasured singles from the Hot Wax label. • Includes in-depth liner notes by acclaimed writer and music historian Stuart Cosgrove.
