Rarely has the primal excitement of the electric blues guitar been so voraciously and expertly illustrated on one compilation than on Screaming And Crying, renowned British blues buff Neil Slaven s monumental homage to the music which shaped both his life and a whole generation. Over three discs and 75 tracks, the set straddles the spectrum of the electrified blues which fuelled the British R&B boom of the 1960s and beyond, mixing much-feted names such as Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley with more deliciously obscure outings by the likes of Doctor Ross and Guitar Shorty. Slaven s liner notes outline the story behind the roughshod classics which bust out of the set, whether screaming with the joy of musical release, or crying in a pool of despair, both amplified through jacked-up guitar strings.

Eighteen months after his last long-player, ‘Reunited’, the acclaimed British guitarist Snowy White presents his new album containing 12 new tracks. Once again, Snowy called on his musical collaborators and friends, including Max Middleton (piano/keys), Ferry Langendrijk (keys), Jessica Lauren (keys), Kuma Harada (bass), Walter Latupeirissa (bass), Juan van Emmerloot (drums) and Jeff Allen(drums). Since the late 1960s, Snowy and his characteristic guitar-playing have made their mark on tasteful blues rock. Whether as a member of Thin Lizzy (on the albums ’Chinatown’ and ’Renegade’), working with Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac), as an indispensable tour musician for Pink Floyd and later Roger Waters, or as a highly-respected solo artist: Snowy has always remained true to his love for excellent, handmade music.

Eric Gales was hailed as the second coming of Jimi Hendrix when he first hit the blues circuit, an anointment that carries with it impossible pressures, and while Gales is a wonderful guitarist (naturally right-handed, he was taught to play the guitar left-handed, an odd thing, but again, Hendrix-like), he isn't Hendrix, nor will he or anyone ever be. Working out of the power trio format, Gales has more than proven he can play on his many albums, but his voice is average at best, and his songs tend toward the generic, often more like vehicles for guitar leads than actual songs that are crying out to be sung. That's why Ghost Notes is so intriguing, because it's Gales' first all-instrumental album, and therefore it bypasses his weaknesses as a performer and plays to his strengths – the man sure can play guitar.

Trouble On The Run is a spectacularly raw, deeply soulful, and masterfully synchronized electric blues studio masterpiece by the critically acclaimed Syracuse, New York outfit The Kingsnakes, released in 1990 by the premier independent blues label Blue Wave Records. Spanning nearly 50 minutes of high-octane roots music across 11 driving tracks, this high-fidelity document stands as a defining monument to the gritty resurgence of late-1980s and early-1990s roadhouse blues archaeology. Anchored by the blistering, virtuoso harmonica work and commanding vocals of frontman Pete McMahon alongside the stinging, razor-sharp guitar leads of Terry Mulhauser, the band delivers a fierce sonic blueprint that seamlessly marries traditional Chicago shuffles with grease-stained jump-blues rhythms and hard-edged rock-and-roll attitude.

Founding Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman essentially retired from music after leaving the band in 1993, choosing to dedicate time to his family and his restaurant, Sticky Fingers. He returned to music in 1997 with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, a rotating old-time rock & roll, R&B, blues, and boogie collective of superstar musicians anchored by keyboardist Georgie Fame, guitarist Albert Lee, pianist Gary Brooker, and guitarist Terry Taylor. Their first album, Struttin' Our Stuff, appeared that year and it was followed two years later by Anyway the Wind Blows, which featured cameos from Peter Frampton, Geraint Watkins, Paul Carrack, and, notably, fellow Stone Keith Richards. Groovin' arrived in 2000, reaching a career peak of 52 on the U.K. charts.

After the guest-star-drenched No Reason to Cry failed to make much of an impact commercially, Eric Clapton returned to using his own band for Slowhand. The difference is substantial – where No Reason to Cry struggled hard to find the right tone, Slowhand opens with the relaxed, bluesy shuffle of J.J. Cale's "Cocaine" and sustains it throughout the course of the album. Alternating between straight blues ("Mean Old Frisco"), country ("Lay Down Sally"), mainstream rock ("Cocaine," "The Core"), and pop ("Wonderful Tonight"), Slowhand doesn't sound schizophrenic because of the band's grasp of the material. This is laid-back virtuosity – although Clapton and his band are never flashy, their playing is masterful and assured. That assurance and the album's eclectic material make Slowhand rank with 461 Ocean Boulevard as Eric Clapton's best albums.

Jasmine's first John Lee Hooker release 'Blues In Transition 1955-1959' concentrated on the recordings he made for his core audience and the emerging college folk scene which helped to propel him to international fame. This second excursion into the iconic bluesman's prolific career focuses on his material from late 1948 to 1954. By early 1949 'Boogie Chillen' was #1 on Billboard's R&B chart and was reputed to have sold over a million copies. It is these numerous boogie recordings that are collected on disc one of this unique package. Most of these discs are solo but several do feature other musicians and special note should be made of the contributions made to several tracks by these other musicians. Eddie Burns plays Harmonica on "Miss Eloise" and Eddie Kirkland provides blistering guitar work to "Four Women In My Life", "How Can You Do It" and "Leave My Wife Alone". The second CD collects together many of his notable blues ballads and mid-tempo songs again on one full length CD. This CD is a must for blues fans and the uninitiated alike. Sit back and prepare yourself to be entranced by John Lee Hooker's almost hypnotic guitar style and before long you'll be stomping your feet to his unique brand of boogie.

John Lee Hooker was the king of the endless boogie, a globally cherished bluesman whose droning, hypnotic, one-chord grooves were driving, primitive, and timeless. During a 50-year career, he melded regional sounds from the Delta, Detroit, and Chicago in a trademark, oft-imitated approach. From the late 1940s until 1969, he cut more than 100 singles for labels such as Modern, Chess, Federal, Atco, and Vee-Jay, including hits such as "I'm in the Mood," "Hobo Blues," "Boogie Chillen," "Crawling Kingsnake," and "Boom Boom." In 1966 he resurrected and reinvented the '50s R&B hit "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" and made it his own. He spent most of the '70s and '80s touring. 1989's The Healer initiated a charting, award-winning, five-album run of Hooker recording new songs and revisioning some of his classics backed by well-known contemporary guests.

Accurately dubbed "the Queen of Chicago blues" (and sometimes just the blues in general), Koko Taylor helped keep the tradition of big-voiced, brassy female blues belters alive, recasting the spirits of early legends like Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Big Mama Thornton, and Memphis Minnie for the modern age. Taylor's rough, raw vocals were perfect for the swaggering new electrified era of the blues, and her massive hit "Wang Dang Doodle" served notice that male dominance in the blues wasn't as exclusive as it seemed. After a productive initial stint on Chess, Taylor spent several decades on the prominent contemporary blues label Alligator, going on to win more W.C. Handy Awards than any other female performer in history, and establishing herself as far and away the greatest female blues singer of her time. Collection includes: Koko Taylor (1969); South Side Lady (1973); I Got What It Takes (1975); The Earthshaker (1978); From The Heart Of A Woman (1981); Queen of the Blues (1985); Jump For Joy (1990).

Bi-Polar Blues is a deeply soulful, gritty, and rawly expressive studio offering from guitar phenom and singer-songwriter Richie Kotzen, released in 1999 via the Rock Guitar Heroes imprint. As the title implies, the record acts as a brilliant, two-sided stylistic exploration, effortlessly balancing fiery, high-octane electric blues-rock workouts with smooth, emotionally resonant blue-eyed soul and rhythm & blues grooves. Handling lead vocals, guitar, Wurlitzer piano, and even various bass and drum tracks himself, Kotzen delivers an intimate yet muscular performance. Backed on select cuts by the tight rhythm section of bassist Rob Harrington and drummer Matt Luneau, the tracklist features a stellar mix of passionately executed originals like Gone Tomorrow Blues alongside highly inventive, guitar-heavy reinterpretations of timeless classics like Tobacco Road, Robert Johnson's From Four Till Late, and B.B. King's iconic anthem The Thrill Is Gone. This high-caliber album remains a definitive testament to Kotzen's incredible vocal range and fluid, blues-soaked guitar phrasing.
