Maybe the only album we've ever seen from Henny Vonk - a jazz singer with a Dutch name, but a style here that's right up there with some of the hipper American singers of the period - especially those who know how to move on the hipper currents of the spectrum! At some level, Henny's got a way of stretching out her words while inflecting them, with a vibe that's reminiscent of Sheila Jordan - but overall, Vonk's maybe a straighter jazz singer, too - but one with a nicely sensitive vibe, as her vocals are balanced out with the introspective piano work of Rov Van Den Broeck. The rhythm duo adds a nice current of soul from time to time - with Clint Houston on bass and Billy Higgins on drums - and many cuts have new lyrics written for the album.

Stelvio Cipriani – Bermude: La Fossa Maledetta (Cave of the Sharks) (1978/2016) is the soundtrack for the 1978 Italian thriller directed by Tonino Ricci. Composed by Stelvio Cipriani, the score blends suspenseful orchestration with jazzy and funky elements typical of ’70s Italian cinema. The 2016 release is a remastered edition, bringing renewed clarity to Cipriani’s atmospheric and tension-filled compositions. Known for its eerie melodies and groovy rhythms, the soundtrack perfectly complements the film’s underwater mystery and cult horror vibe. It’s a must-have for fans of vintage Italian film scores and Cipriani’s work.

Luis Bacalov – Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo (1996) is the official soundtrack reissue of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1964 film The Gospel According to Matthew. Composed and arranged by Luis Bacalov, the score blends classical, liturgical, and folk influences, enhancing the film’s raw, neorealist portrayal of Christ’s life. The 1996 edition includes original music by Bacalov along with selected sacred and traditional pieces, such as Bach’s Mass in B Minor and Blind Willie Johnson’s “Dark Was the Night.” The soundtrack is deeply emotional and spiritually resonant, reflecting the film’s powerful and unconventional approach.

Octopus from Norway (don't be confused to countless bands with same name) was and is an obscure prog band gone unnoticed in prog circles. They released only one album in 1981 named Thaerie Wiighen (taken the name from a hero from literature of famous norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen). There is not much to find about this band or when they were disbanded. The music offered is pretty good all the way, symphonic prog with a nordic feel very similar in places with Bo Hansson releases , with some spacey moments here and there with an Eloy atmosphere, lots of instrumental sections aswell. Excellent are the keyboards passages very reminescent of Rick Wakeman or Genesis, some parts remind of Kerrs Pink. All in all a very solid album gone under the radar, definetly worth checking.

The two twin-albums “DisConnected” and “Connected” shows us a Remy who has matured in his music and who has developed a style of his own. And an impressive style it is. Using both classic instruments like the VCS3 (I and II) and the Memorymoog as well as modern equipment, he brings us music that will appeal to a lot of electronic music fans. He combines excellent sequences, great atmospheres, well-constructed rhythms and nice solos. A great example of this is the track “Ages” from “DisConnected” which shows Curly Quazar on electric guitar. Remy is a master of the sequence: “The Missing Part” from “Connected” clearly indicates this.

Where as ABBA Gold pulls together 19 of the group's biggest hits and most familiar songs, Number Ones is a variation on this concept, collecting 18 tracks that were #1 hits in many of the countries where ABBA were successful. In the end, only three tracks from ABBA Gold do not make the cut: "Does Your Mother Know", "Lay All Your Love on Me", and "Thank You for the Music". A limited edition, also released in the UK, includes a bonus disc with 12 tracks from ABBA's #1 albums. Number Ones is a collection of all the international #1 hits on one DVD. Includes an interactive scrapbook with details of all the Abba #1's. Also includes footage from Live From Top Of The Pops, BBC 1974; from Hei Sveis!, Norway 1975 and from The Late Late Breakfast Show, BBC 1982.

One of Canada's most enduring bands, the Guess Who rose to fame in their homeland in the 1960s and were major international hitmakers in the '70s, starting out as a hard-hitting garage-y combo (as heard on their first hit, "Shakin' All Over") and maturing into a thoughtful rock band who were as comfortable with tough, guitar-based rockers like "American Woman" and heartfelt, melodic numbers like "These Eyes." Though the band found its greatest fame with lead singer and pianist Burton Cummings and guitarist Randy Bachman, through the 1970s they continued to enjoy success after Bachman's departure with 1970's Share the Land and 1972's Rockin'.

Nina Simone Sings the Blues, issued in 1967, was her RCA label debut, and was a brave departure from the material she had been recording for Phillips. Indeed, her final album for that label, High Priestess of Soul, featured the singer, pianist, and songwriter fronting a virtual orchestra. Here, Simone is backed by a pair of guitarists (Eric Gale and Rudy Stevenson), bassist (Bob Bushnell), drummer (Bernard "Pretty" Purdie), organist (Ernie Hayes), and harmonica player who doubled on saxophone (Buddy Lucas). Simone handled the piano chores. The song selection is key here. Because for all intents and purposes this is perhaps the rawest record Simone ever cut. It opens with the sultry, nocturnal, slow-burning original "Do I Move You," which doesn't beg the question but demands an answer: "Do I move you?/Are you willin'?/Do I groove you?/Is it thrillin'?/Do I soothe you?/Tell the truth now?/Do I move you?/Are you loose now?/The answer better be yeah…It pleases me…." As the guitarists slip and slide around her husky vocal, a harmonica wails in the space between, and Simone's piano is the authority, hard and purposely slow.

The Ugly Ducklings were probably the best-known Canadian garage rock group of the mid-'60s. Formed in Toronto's famed Yorkville area in 1965, the band flourished in the many coffeehouses around the Yorkville district as a Rolling Stones cover band before becoming the Ugly Ducklings and attracting the attention of the local independent Yorktown Records label. The band recorded a single, "Nothin'," which became a Canadian hit, and opened for the Rolling Stones in 1966 when the Stones played Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. The bandmembers were quickly becoming local heroes, and in 1967 the album Somewhere Outside was released on Yorktown. The album contained nine original compositions as well as two cover songs…

The blues of Lurrie Bell comes from a turbulent place, but there's no denying the man can play. This album brings together tracks from three different sessions, the bulk being held in 1997. Supported by a spartan rhythm section, Bell sprays kamikaze guitar licks over a bevy of old standards like "Five Long Years," "Who Do You Love," "Mean Old Frisco," and "You're the One." The last four songs on the album are the real treat; cut in 1995 at the Mercurial Son sessions, this is just Lurrie and his electric guitar running through raw, soulful, and sometimes whacked-out versions of everything from "Rollin' and Tumblin'" to "If I Had a Hammer." If you've wondered what all the fuss is about, grab this CD and turn on to the blues world of Lurrie Bell.

The tracks that make up Straight Life had been sitting in the Blue Note vaults since they were recorded on June 22, 1961, representing the only recorded output that year by Jimmy Smith and his trio of the era, which included guitarist Quentin Warren and drummer Donald Bailey. Somehow these ten songs got lost in the shuffle between the 1960 Blue Note date Crazy! Baby and Smith's leap into the national spotlight with his first Verve release, Bashin', in 1962. The trio swings along on six standards and three originals "Straight Life," "Jimmy's Blues," and two versions of "Minor Fare." Although not in the same league as Midnight Special or Prayer Meetin', it's great to hear this long lost hard bop session from the master of the Hammond B-3.

Even though Vladimir Ashkenazy is most often celebrated for his brilliantly virtuosic interpretations of Romantic repertoire, his skills in playing works of the Classical era are just as worthy, as proved by this 10-disc set from London of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's piano concertos. These performances span a period from 1966 to 1988, capturing a youthful and vigorous Ashkenazy playing and conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra and the English Chamber Orchestra from the keyboard, in approved Mozartian fashion. All of the keyboard concertos are here, including the official 27 concertos for piano and orchestra, the Concerto for two pianos in E flat major, K. 365, the Concerto for three pianos in F major, K. 242, as well as the two Rondos K. 382 and K. 386. Ashkenazy's elegant playing has been highly praised by critics and placed on a level with his esteemed contemporaries Murray Perahia, Daniel Barenboim, and Alfred Brendel, all past masters of Mozart's primary medium of expression.
