Alternative Rock | Label: Warner Records

Festival-headlining favourites Biffy Clyro, with three UK #1 albums, make their highly anticipated return with 'Futique,' set for release on September 26th. The album's first single, 'A Little Love,' instantly showcased their enduring power, premiering as Radio 1’s Hottest Record, igniting Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and reaching #1 on the UK’s Official Vinyl Singles Chart. 'Futique' delves into our relationship with memory and what we cherish across time. As Simon Neil explains, it's "an exploration of ideas, objects or relationships that exist across time - we are never aware when we do anything for the last time and there’s a beauty and sadness within that. What will be your 'Futique'?" Informed by reflections on the digital age's impact on memory and the band's own remarkable journey from teenage friends to alternative rock giants, 'Futique' explores the challenges and enduring connections that define them. It's a powerfully relatable narrative from one of Britain's most beloved bands, reminding us to appreciate what we have.

Avant-Garde Jazz, Classical | Label: Tzadik Records

This CD is about quality not quantity - less than thirty minutes in total, but absolutely some of the most incredible music Zorn has ever composed. Dramatic, intense, mercurial, challenging, and endlessly virtuosic, Zorn’s writing for strings is amongst the most exciting ever achieved in the classical world. Here he expands the fabulous Jack Quartet to a quintet and sextet with the addition of two of the most accomplished musicians in the New York scene: Yura Lee and Michael Nicolas. Composed in 2020, during the initial months of the Covid-19 lockdown, these are two of Zorn’s greatest masterpieces, beautifully recorded at Oktaven by Ryan Streber, and passionately performed by six members of Zorn’s inner circle.

Recorded live in Birmingham during a Contemporary Music Network tour in 2002, Tramonto finds UK pianist John Taylor (1942-2015) in celebratory, outgoing mood, fronting one of his most dynamic and quick-witted groups, with US musicians Marc Johnson and Joey Baron – the energetic team that would later collaborate on the critically-lauded ECM recording Rosslyn. Here the repertoire features the well-known Taylor tunes “Pure and Simple”, “Between Moons” and “Ambleside” (heard in an epic 15 minute version), as well as the Ralph Towner-composed title track and Steve Swallow’s “Up Too Late”, which swirls from bop phrasing to free playing, and includes high arco soloing from Johnson, and skittering drums from Baron. In all, a welcome reminder of what a creative force John Taylor could be, as leader of an outstanding piano trio.

This album entitled “If Not Now” came together thanks to a timely creative spark provided by producer Cory Weeds, who offered clarinetist James Danderfer a recording date at the legendary Rudy Van Gelder Studio. Amid the demands of raising a family and navigating an increasingly busy and distracted world, a real deadline and an exceptional group of musicians became a clear call to action. All the music was composed over a focused few months and reflects a deeply personal snapshot of the artist’s life—his family, his musical influences, and the players he was writing for. At the heart of the project is Danderfer’s clarinet, guiding the narrative with warmth, lyricism, and clarity.

Boomerang is the second studio album by British duo the Creatures (a.k.a. singer Siouxsie Sioux and musician Budgie). The album was recorded in Spain with Mike Hedges, in Jerez de la Frontera, in the southeast part in Andalusia in the province of Cádiz. It featured brass arrangements including trumpet, trombone and saxophone. Boomerang received widespread critical acclaim from British music critics, who praised Siouxsie's vocals and the choice of a wide range of musical styles on the album, including blues, jazz and Spanish styles such as flamenco. The album was later hailed by singer Jeff Buckley, who covered the song "Killing Time". The album was released to critical acclaim. NME's Roger Morton qualified it as "a rich and unsettling landscape of exotica", praising "the pre-eminence of Budgie's Spanish-tribal-jazz drumming". Simon Reynolds of Melody Maker stated that "Boomerang abounds with scarcely anticipated brilliance", qualifying it as "inventive and invigorated music".

This edition of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers is an unusual one. The personnel includes Blakey veterans Lee Morgan (returning to the band after some success as a leader), Curtis Fuller, and Victor Sproles, along with John Hicks (who appeared on three other Blakey records) and the tenor saxophonist John Gilmore (of Sun Ra fame) in his only appearance with the band. As was typical of Blakey-led groups, the emphasis is on original material by its members; the one Broadway show tune included, "Faith," is from a long since forgotten I Had a Ball. Morgan's driving blues "'S Make It" is easily the highlight of the session, though Hicks' richly voiced "Waltz for Ruth" and Fuller's Latin-flavored "Little Hughie" also deserve to be better known than they are. It's a shame that this was the only recording by this particular lineup of the Jazz Messengers, as Gilmore's strong blowing complements Morgan very well.
