Given the cohesion of the group's studio albums, Can's songs work surprisingly well in compilation form, as evidenced by Cannibalism 1, a collection of tracks taken from the first six years of the group's existence. Covering ground from 1969's Monster Movie to 1974's Soon Over Babaluma (although nothing from 1973's superb Future Days makes the cut), the sampler compiles many of the group's high points (including "Father Cannot Yell," "She Brings the Rain," "Mushroom," and "Soup"), and offers a thorough overview of Can's eclectic musical history to date, even if the abridged versions of cuts like "Mother Sky," "Aumgn," and "Halleluhwah" don't measure up to the full-length renditions featured on the original albums…

From out of nowhere came Little Sam Davis with this sterling set, making it clear that at least a few blues harpists of post-war vintage are still roaming around out there, just waiting to be rediscovered. Backed by a sharp rhythm section, Davis shows that he's been keeping his ear to the ground over the decades. His harp mastery and enthusiastic vocals are equally arresting.

Friedrich Kiel enjoyed great prestige as a professor of composition in Berlin where his many students included Stanford and Paderewski. As a teacher he remained broadminded and undogmatic. These elegantly poised works show a rather conservative craftsman but one who absorbed the influences of the best of his contemporaries – Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Liszt. The Suite is Beethovenian in style, while his approach in the Six Fugues is largely lyrical.

Pianist Sarah Beth Briggs’ latest AVIE offering, Small Treasures, leads with music by two composers of which her interpretations have been widely praised – Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms – alongside works by Robert’s wife Clara, two members of the French composing circle ‘Les Six’ – Poulenc and Tailleferre – all capped with a Mozart miniature. In her first solo recording for AVIE in 2019, Sarah Beth Briggs’ performances of music by Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms were described as “81 minutes of pianistic Heaven” by International Piano Magazine. In her latest offering, Small Treasures, Sarah returns (amongst others) to two of those composers’ greatest sets of miniatures: Schumann’s piano cycle Waldszenen and Brahms’s 4 Klavierstücke, Op.119, his final statement for solo piano.

Galina Ustvolskaya was a profoundly original composer, unrivalled in the extremism of her style, who was largely ignored during her lifetime. Fiercely independent, Ustvolskaya created highly expressive, even violent music that sounds like the work of no other composer and reveals no distinct influences, while often being imbued with religiosity or spirituality. Her music has been described as having the ‘narrowness of a laser beam capable of piercing metal’.

DGM & Panegyric proudly present… One of the highlights of the King Crimson 50th anniversary CD/Blu-Ray editions to date has been King Crimson producer David Singleton’s series of Elemental Mixes as he utilises the full spectrum of available studio sessions for each album to produce very different takes on the familiar songs and pieces. This is especially true of Lizard where the ambition of the material, the much-expanded line-up of musicians - the background of many of them in the jazz rather than the rock world - and the number of takes recorded, resulted in a large amount of material to be considered for this album. There was enough material for David to be able to mix and produce alternate takes for every piece from the original album. As well as giving great insight into the recordings, the nature of Elemental Mixes allows for different takes from individual musicians to be included – sometimes alongside one another - in a way that would never be considered in the formulation of the original album.

Stylus reckoned that The Donnas were, "incapable of playing in anything but the key of badass", while Rolling Stone reckoned that the band's "wailing on solos that would make AC/DC's Angus Young proud". CD3 completes all of the recordings released by the quartet between 2002 and 2005 and adds raucous live sets recorded in Boston in 2003 plus three tracks recorded for XFM, along with the single B-sides 'Hyperactive', 'Rock 'n' Roll Machine', 'Mama's Boy', 'Play My Game' and 'Done With You', plus acoustic versions of 'Fall Behind Me' and 'Don't Break Me Down'. Oslo Kammerakademi performs chamber music for winds based on the historical Harmoniemusik instrumentation.
