Musician and visual artist Kim Gordon returns with her second solo album, The Collective, which will be released March 8th on Matador. Recorded in Gordon’s native Los Angeles, The Collective follows her 2019 full-length debut No Home Record and continues her collaboration with producer Justin Raisen (Lil Yachty, John Cale, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Charli XCX, Yves Tumor), with additional production from Anthony Paul Lopez. The album advances their joint world building, with Raisin’s damaged, blown out dub and trap constructions playing the foil to Gordon’s intuitive word collages and hooky mantras, which conjure communication, commercial sublimation and sensory overload.

In the '70s, drummer Alan White was among the Yes members who recorded solo projects; the others included Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, and Rick Wakeman. Ramshackled, White's only solo album, was far from a huge seller, but some Yes fans bought it out of curiosity. Many of them were no doubt expecting to hear progressive rock, but this out of print LP is a long way from Relayer or Tales from Topographic Oceans. Instead, White turns his attention to blue-eyed soul-pop and, to a lesser degree, jazz fusion with erratic results. While the singing is unimpressive, some of the material is OK. "One Way Rag," "Giddy," and "Ooooh Baby" have more in common with Van Morrison than with Yes, King Crimson, or Genesis, and the jazz fusion instrumental "Avakak" might have worked on a CTI session of the early to mid-'70s.

The Canterbury scene combined elements of jazz, folk, rock and melodic pop into a sound that bridged the gulf between psychedelic and progressive rock, and ultimately shattered all genre barriers. At the heart of the Canterbury scene was a group of musicians whose career has now spanned more than half a century: the legend that is CARAVAN. Who Do You Think We Are? is the ultimate tribute to the ultimate Canterbury band. This deluxe box set runs to a staggering 37 discs. It provides a fascinating and evocative snapshot of the music scene at what was a dynamic and exciting time as the rock ‘n’ roll and teen era gave way to emerging new sounds at the beginning of the 1960s, and features an entertaining range of styles and genres. As always with these chart collections, it includes a number of unfamiliar names and recordings towards the bottom of the chart, of which even seasoned pop enthusiasts may not be too aware, and which will be welcome additions to their collections. It contains a 12,000+ word booklet featuring background notes on every record as well as full discographical and chart information.

1960 was almost all about jazz and blues! So much in fact that the great names of that era are still the ones everyone refers to today, including: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Nina Simone, Bill Evans Trio, Etta James, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, and B.B. King.
Rock and pop were not yet as prevalent as they would become a few years later with the Beatles and The Rolling Stones, but the pioneers of the genre—Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, The Ventures—were already paving the way.

The Orb virtually invented the electronic genre known as ambient house, resurrecting slower, more soulful rhythms and providing a soundtrack for early-morning ravers once the clubs closed their doors. Frontman Dr. Alex Paterson's formula was quite simple: he slowed down the rhythms of classic Chicago house and added synth work and effects inspired by '70s ambient pioneers Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream. To make the whole a bit more listenable - as opposed to danceable - obscure vocal samples were looped, usually providing a theme for tracks that lacked singing. The group popularized the genre by appearing on the British chart show Top of the Pops and hitting number one in the U.K. with the 1992 album U.F.Orb. The Orb managed to remain signed to Island Records throughout the '90s, even as they were releasing some of their most challenging work (Pomme Fritz, Orbus Terrarum)…

Known to Americans most for her belting rendition of the theme to Goldfinger, the 1964 edition in the James Bond series (as well as 1971's Diamonds Are Forever and 1979's Moonraker), Shirley Bassey was one of the most popular female vocalists in Britain during the last half of the 20th century. Known as "Bassey the Belter" and also the "Tigress of Tiger Bay," her early career in touring shows and cabaret brought her a recording contract with Philips by the late '50s. After reaching the top of the British charts in 1959 with "As I Love You" and later "Reach for the Stars/Climb Every Mountain," Bassey was tapped to sing the theme song to the third James Bond vehicle. Her voice, brassy and sexy, conveyed the James Bond myth perfectly, and the song became a big hit in America. Though later chart placings in the U.S. were few, she continued to do well in Great Britain, France, and the Netherlands into the mid-'70s.

Hybrid Stereo SACD from Analogue Productions! Mastered by Kevin Gray from the original U.K. Island analog tape Gold-selling second album was an early turning point for the band! Jethro Tull's second album, Stand Up, marked an early turning point for the band with the addition of guitarist Martin Barre along with Ian Anderson's introduction of folk-rock influences to the group's blues-based sound. Released in the summer of 1969, Stand Up rose quickly to the top of the U.K. Albums Chart, and eventually earned gold certification in the U.S.

Frank Zappa: Over-nite Sensation is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Universal Music Group with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. The disc boots to the main menu seen in screenshot 10, but as soon as either a track or the Play button is clicked, there's an amusing "tour" through the memorable original album cover, including various elements that have animated properties.The Blu-ray disc advertises Dolby Atmos 48/24, Dolby TrueHD 5.1 48/24, Quadrophonic 96/24 and PCM Stereo (both 96/24 and 192/24) options, but rather interestingly while all my equipment is showing the "proper" kilohertz for each track, the Quadrophonic track shows as Dolby TrueHD 5.1 on both my player and BDInfo. While my player properly showed a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 core for the Atmos track, for some weird reason BDInfo showed a 5.1 core for that track. I'll leave it to those interested in these discrepancies to hash it out amongst themselves and will simply report what I hear, and in that regard both the Atmos and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 48/24 options are amazingly immersive and impressively powerful in the midrange and low end.

The opera Šárka could be termed a joint work of deep love and feeling. Zdenek Fibich composed it at the end of the 19th century to the libretto of Anežka Schulzová, his pupil and love of his life. The story of Šárka loosely links up to the action of the festive opera Libuše, created by Bedrich Smetana. It depicts the outbreak of the so-called Maidens’ War following the death of the mythical Princess, when women wanted to regain the privileges they had once enjoyed under Libuše’s reign.

The Wild Life box set is three CDs and includes a remarkably generous selection of audio - 25 bonus tracks including rough mixes of the album, original single edits, B-sides, home recordings and other previously unreleased material. The packaging looks consistent with the last few, so what you have is a slipcase into which slot a few books. The "main" book is a 128-page tome written by David Fricke which tells the story of the album etc., but there is also a 48-page scrapbook of tour diaries (from the 1972 tour), lyrics, setlists, unpublished polaroids and the like.
The irony of the first Wings album is that it seems more domesticated than Ram, feeling more like a Paul McCartney 'n' Linda effort than that record. Perhaps it's because this album is filled with music that's defiantly lightweight - not just the cloying cover of "Love Is Strange" but two versions apiece of songs called "Mumbo" and "Bip Bop"…

Bob Margolin continues to pay homage to Muddy Waters with each record he cuts and this debut for Blind Pig is no exception. His slide playing is Waters to a tee while his songwriting chops stay firmly in the mold of what Waters himself would come up with, albeit less inspired. Margolin's band is a three-piece knockoff of the old Waters band with Tad Waleters blowing harp in the Little Walter tradition while drummer Wes Johnson supplies a solid Chicago beat, no frills or overplaying out of any of them. If you like your Chicago blues served up '50s style without a lot of technical niceties, this album's right up your alley.
