Modern Art is the prelude recording for Art Farmer prior to his partnership with Benny Golson in the Jazztet, and also foreshadows the classy, tasteful inventiveness that group brought to the modern jazz world two years after this 1958 session. Pianist Bill Evans is in here, just before his pivotal work with Miles Davis on the classic album Kind of Blue, and was the table setter for McCoy Tyner's membership in the Jazztet. Brother Addison Farmer on bass and the great drummer Dave Bailey round out this sterling quintet that specializes in playing music with a subtle approach, which is neither tame nor conservatively lazy. Included on this date is the great Junior Mance tune "Jubilation," perfectly understated in a light gospel, soul-jazz, tuneful melody with both horns wonderfully matched up in balanced unison, side by side.

Walking in the Night, recorded for RCA a year before the legendary Best Italian Jazz 1962, is actually the stronger album. Along with saxophonist Gianni Basso and trumpeter Oscar Valdambrini, the quintet lineup includes the great bassist Giorgio Azzolini, pianist Renato Sellani, and drummer Gianni Carzola. This 11-tune set is a much more diverse program, consisting not only of flaming hard bop and ballads, but killer, Euro-styled Latin groovers such as "Lotar" by the trumpeter, and Attilo Donadio's wonderful take on American West Coast jazz in "Blues for Gerry." There are some great surprises here, too, including the fleet, knotty "Estroverso" by Piero Umiliani, which is a showcase for how tight and quick this group could be when playing bop. The composer also contributed a ballad to the set in "Dialogo," which reveals the frontline's inherent lyricism…

Trumpeter Donald Byrd and baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams worked together on several recordings between 1958 and 1961, and The Cat Walk (released on LP in 1962) is among the best. A quintet setting, with pianist Duke Pearson (another longtime Byrd collaborator), bassist Laymon Jackson, and a lively Philly Joe Jones on drums joining the front line of Byrd and Adams, the sessions for The Cat Walk benefited from the writing and arrangement skills of Pearson, who contributes three compositions here, the impressive opener "Say You're Mine," "Duke's Mixture," and "Hello Bright Sunflower," which borrows its melodic structure from the opening bars of "Lullaby of Broadway" and features Byrd using a muted trumpet.

This is a very interesting set, for bassist Harvie Swartz had the opportunity to play with five of his favorite guitarists. There are lengthy workouts with guitarist Mike Stern and drummer Winard Harper on "Alone Together," "Softly as in a Morning Sunrise," and "Sunny Moon for Two" that find Stern in particularly exciting form. Two songs match Swartz with guitarist Mick Goodrick and drummer Leon Parker (who was making his recording debut), and on a third song, guitarist Leni Stern makes the trio a quartet. In addition, Swartz plays two duets with John Scofield ("Gone With the Wind" and "Nardis") and one with Gene Bertoncini ("Embraceable You"). Everything works, making this one of Harvie Swartz's best recordings to date.

At age 33 for this one, Mance (piano), with Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Mickey Roker (drums), has all the jazz and blues bases covered, going back to boogie and stride, through swing and bop, with a couple of more modernistic numbers rounding out this complete overview of classic American soul-based black music. Mance evokes wonderfully patient, romantic notions on "Creole Love Call," with creamy, molasses-like melodicism stirred by Roker's expert brush work. "Yancey Special" has Mance digging in and getting down as Roker shuffles along. "In the Evening" is much more tinkling and upbeat here than Leroy Carr wrote it, whereas the hard-swinging "Jumpin' the Blues" is as much fun to hear as it must have been to play. At his most delicate on Ray Brown's "Gravy Waltz," Mance starts solo, staggering the melody, while a relaxed "Blue Monk" has Mance tossing in extra notes during the melody…

For these 1957 sessions Jackson is partnered alternately with Frank Wess and Bobby Jaspar - two of the leading pioneers that helped bring the flute into the mainstream of jazz. For these performances the rhythm section blends and balances superbly, creating supple, meaty, hard bopping grooves for Jackson's limitless capacity for invention and for the stellar, swinging performances of Jaspar and Wess.

Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology is a monumental, 111-track historical document attempting the Herculean task of charting the entire sonic evolution of America's classical music. Richie Kamuca (1930–1977) was one of the finest tenor saxophonists of his generation, though never granted the full recognition his artistry deserved. Rising to prominence with Stan Kenton and Woody Herman in the early 1950s, he settled in Los Angeles in 1956 and soon became a leading voice on the West Coast scene, recording and performing with Chet Baker, Shelly Manne, Bill Perkins, Conte Candoli, and many others. Equally at home in big bands, studios, and small groups, Kamuca blended the cool lyricism of Lester Young with the fluent drive of Stan Getz and Zoot Sims, ultimately forging a highly personal style.

Michel Legrand has spent most of his life as a composer in the studios and for films, but this release is a jazz classic.Tenor great Ben Webster, flutist Herbie Mann, four trombonists, and a rhythm section perform pieces by Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, Django Reinhardt ("Nuages"), and the Count Basie-associated "Blue and Sentimental." A big band with trumpeters Art Farmer and Donald Byrd and altoist Phil Woods plays "Stompin' at the Savoy," "A Night in Tunisia," and Bix Beiderbecke's "In a Mist." The most famous session has Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Phil Woods, Herbie Mann, pianist Bill Evans, harp, vibes, baritone, and a rhythm section performing music by Thelonious Monk, John Lewis, Jelly Roll Morton ("Wild Man Blues"), and Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz." Throughout this superlative album, the arrangements are colorful and unusual, making one wish that Legrand had recorded more jazz albums through the years.

A really great title for this classic late 50s set - as the record showcases a host of young alto players who've all come up in the generation of Charlie Parker - but who are each bringing their own sense of style to the instrument! There's hardly any "bird feathers" here - as the Charlie Parker modes are never used slavishly, but instead as a way to sprout wings and really take off in new direction - a difference that really comes through wonderfully on the tracks that feature two different altoists playing together. Titles include Phil Woods and Gene Quill on alto on "Solar" and "Airegin"; Jackie McLean and John Jenkins on alto on "Bird Feathers"; and Hal McKusick on alto with Billy Byers on trombone and Eddie Costa on piano - on the tracks "Interim", "Don't Worry Bout Me", and "Con Alma".

Recorded at the Surf Club in Los Angeles in February 1952, these performances capture Art Pepper at the defining moment of his early career as a leader. Having recently left Stan Kenton's orchestra, he found his ideal musical setting in his first great quartet with Hampton Hawes, Joe Mondragon, and Larry Bunker—a group whose freshness, swing, and freedom helped shape the emerging West Coast jazz scene.
