A person spends all day building a machine, only for it to torture them all through the night. As if that wasn’t twisted enough, they like it. In fact, they like being tortured so much that, come morning, they wake up rejuvenated, eager to tweak the machine until it runs perfectly in their mind. This is the nocturnal vision that inspired Cryptopsy’s ninth full-length nightmare. “Beware the spotlight”, warns vocalist Matt McGachy before “Dead Eyes Replete” flashes before your eyes with a skull crushing breakdown. An Insatiable Violence mirrors our toxic relationship with social media, but while eerily prescient, the album is influenced by the many mutations that have defined the band’s Hall of Fame discography. Inspired by a mukbang gone horribly wrong, ravenous opener “The Nimis Adoration” is a smorgasbord of gut-busting blasts, Christian Donaldson’s fishhook riffs and a heavy helping of pit-pleasing groove…

All Shook Up is the fifth studio album by American rock band Cheap Trick. Released in 1980, it was produced by former Beatles producer George Martin. As such, this was the first album since their debut to be produced by someone other than Tom Werman. All Shook Up was even quirkier than its predecessor, the platinum-selling Dream Police. Many of its songs were less radio friendly and more experimental, and the cover art, influenced by Magritte's Time Transfixed, led many to question what the band was trying to accomplish. However, at the time, Cheap Trick had severed ties with long-time producer Tom Werman and took the opportunity to take their sound in a different direction. With the assistance of producer George Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick, many of the songs have a dimension not found on any other Cheap Trick album.

Rhino Records asked producer Brian Ahern to select his favorite tracks from the Emmylou Harris albums he helmed – he produced her first 11 studio offerings for Reprise Records. That's quite a daunting task when you consider that some of those recordings were Elite Hotel, Luxury Liner, Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town, and Pieces of the Sky, just to name a few. But Ahern rose to the task and put together a solid, aesthetically perfect set here, highlighting many different aspects of Harris' career at the time: from her trademark, utterly pure singing voice, to her song selection, to the sound of her band and the studio she recorded in, this is a top-notch set from start to finish and serves as an excellent introduction to her early work for the newcomer.

Cut in the late '70s, this album is far more than a promising collection of demos; it's a full length, fully-produced album that showcases all of Johnson's awesome talent – not only as a guitar virtuoso, but as a talented pop/rock songwriter. Tunes such as "Showdown" clearly indicate the talent that Johnson had, even at this early stage. A classy false start to a great career, and a must for fans of Eric Johnson.

AVID Jazz here presents three classic Tony Scott albums plus including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. Born Anthony Sciacca into a musical family, in New Jersey in 1921, Tony Scott went on to study at Julliard before taking the jazz road to “fame and fortune”. Coming up he played with just about everyone, from mentor Ben Webster to Buddy Rich, Trummy Young, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Duke Ellington to name but a few. “52nd Street Scene” acts as a kind of tribute to the New York jazz scene happening between 1942 and 1949 based around the famous 52nd Street area. It features such luminaries as Joe Thomas, Wilbur De Paris, Pee Wee Russell, Coleman Hawkins, Tommy Flanagan, Al Cohn, Roy Haynes and Red Rodney. “In Hi-Fi” is an album of two sides, side one recorded in the studio and side two recorded “on the spot” at Mintons. It features amongst others Dick Katz, Philly Joe Jones, Percy Heath, Milt Hinton, Osie Johnson and Earl May. “The Touch of Tony Scott” finds our man in a number of combinations! With his orchestra, in a tentet and in a more modest quartet!

To blues and rock fans Art Blakey was the John Mayall of the jazz world! His 35 year association with his Jazz Messengers being the same kind of training ground for jazz musicians that Eric Clapton and Mick Taylor found with Mayall in the ‘60s. The list is incredible, from Hank Mobley, Horace Silver and Freddie Hubbard to Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan and Wynton Marsalis and way beyond. Blakey started his long career back in the 1930s playing with Mary Lou Williams and touring with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra.

AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic Album series with a re-mastered 2CD second set release from Kenny Dorham. From an early start playing piano at age seven, Kenny Dorham moved on to trumpet and played with the likes of Wild Bill Davis, Russell Jacquet (brother of Illinois), Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Eckstine and Lionel Hampton. Finally in 1948 he joined up with Charlie Parker in a small group setting where his soloing finally gained the attention he had for so long deserved. We at AVID like Kenny’s style so much we decided he should get a Second Set, and here it is, besides, due to space limitations, we omitted some classic albums from the great trumpeter’s first set! Across our four fine selections Kenny is joined by the absolute cream of jazz players of the day, many of whom you will find with their own albums in our extensive catalogue. The names literally read like a who’s who of jazz greats including Hank Mobley, Cecil Payne, Horace Silver, Oscar Pettiford, Art Blakey, Kenny Burrell, J.R. Monterose, Hank Jones, Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones.

It is a collection of nine previously issued singles released between 1970 and 1980, as well as one new track, "Could I Have This Dance", which was newly recorded for this album (and simultaneously appeared on the soundtrack to the film Urban Cowboy). Though Murray's fourth compilation album, Greatest Hits was the first collection of her biggest charting singles, from her breakthrough Top 10 smash, "Snowbird", through 1980. (Previous compilations had included some of Murray's chart hits along with album tracks and lesser known songs.) It peaked at #16 on the Billboard album chart, hit #2 (where it held for nine weeks) on the Top Country Albums chart, and is certified 4× Multi-Platinum by the RIAA in the United States - Anne's biggest selling career disc.

This compilation of work from the decade by Banco de Gaia (aka Toby Marks) not only shows off his best work in a setting that's a continuous mix, but also makes one of the strongest cases yet for electronica as the new prog rock. It might not have the complex time signatures or rampant instrumental virtuosity of an earlier era, but it does offer far more than most rock music, with depth, ingenuity, and a tune that - generally - progress from A to B, and in the best cases, to C and beyond. And Marks frequently offers the very best cases, not just on pieces like the excellent "Last Train to Lsaha" or "887," but also on "Gizeh" and "Mafich Arabi." You can trace the development in his work, from the early post-rave material to the more thoughtful, ethnic-influenced work, which is ultimately more satisfying…

English listeners went mad for Katie Melua with the release of her debut album in late 2003. Issued domestically in June 2004, Call Off the Search posits the lovely Melua pristinely in between pop, adult contemporary, and traditional American musical forms, with savvy marketing handling the finishing touches. (Think Norah Jones.) It's a comfortable, lightly melodic affair that drinks red wine safely in the middle of the road. Raised in Soviet Georgia and the United Kingdom, Melua has a beguiling accent that colors the ends of her phrases, adding character to her velvety, if occasionally only satisfactory singing voice.
