Their third recording was one of the group's stronger outings, even if it confirms their status as folk popularizers rather than musical innovators. In particular, this record was essential to boosting the profile of Bob Dylan, including their huge hit cover of "Blowin' in the Wind," their Top Ten version of "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," and the bluesy "Quit Your Lowdown Ways," which Dylan himself would not release in the '60s (although his version finally came out on The Bootleg Series). "Stewball," "All My Trials," and "Tell It on the Mountain" were other highlights of their early repertoire, and the dramatic, strident, but inspirational "Very Last Day" is one of the best original tunes the group ever did.

Fate for Breakfast is the fourth solo studio album by Art Garfunkel, released in March 1979 on Columbia Records. It was his first album to miss the U.S. Billboard Top 40 (charting at 67) and his first album containing no U.S. Top 40 singles. Yet the album garnered international success, reaching the top-ten in some European countries. The European release includes "Bright Eyes", which was featured in the film version of the novel Watership Down, and reached the number-one spot in the United Kingdom, becoming the biggest-selling single of 1979 there. The album was issued in six different sleeves, each with a different shot of Art Garfunkel at the breakfast table. David Sanborn covered "And I Know" entitled "Love Will Come Someday" for his 1982 album As We Speak. Also on the album is a cover of Cliff Richard's 1976 hit "Miss You Nights".

This is an album that should not have worked. LaVern Baker (a fine R&B singer) was joined by all-stars from mainstream jazz (including trumpeter Buck Clayton, trombonist Vic Dickenson, tenor-saxophonist Paul Quinichette and pianist Nat Pierce) for twelve songs associated with the great '20s blues singer Bessie Smith. Despite the potentially conflicting styles, this project is quite successful and often exciting. The arrangements by Phil Moore, Nat Pierce, and Ernie Wilkins do not attempt to re-create the original recordings; Baker sings in her own style (rather than trying to emulate Bessie Smith), and the hot solos work well with her vocals.

Woman is the first solo album by British musician Mike McGear (spelled Michael on the cover), brother of former-Beatle Paul McCartney, who also co-wrote a song, but is credited as a "friend". Roger McGough produced and co-wrote some songs with McGear. The cover is a black-and-white photo of McGear/McCartney's mother.

This programme brings together the three great ballets which Stravinsky composed for Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev. These vibrantly atmospheric scores were all revised after their Parisian premières, and the 1945 version of the Firebird Suite was still brand new at the time of this recording. In what are widely considered to be the best of his commercial recordings of these works, Stravinsky the conductor brings out the expressive and vividly incisive rhythmic strengths of the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York.

Four of the 13 tracks on Island's The Best of Spooky Tooth come from 1969's Spooky Two album, while the remaining tracks represent the band's less celebrated material. Spooky Tooth's mellow, easy blues-rock sound is experienced from the first track, a slick rendition of John D. Loudermilk's "Tobacco Road." Most of the band's peak material is included here, like "Better by You, Better by Me" and "Evil Woman." The dreamy, psychedelic-tinged "It's All About a Roundabout" is one of the album's best songs, proving the band could be adventurous at will. Much in the same manner is "As Long as the World Keeps Changing," with its hippie-like hallucinatory feel. Versions of the Beatles' "I Am the Walrus" and the Band's "The Weight" are covered peculiarly, but not terribly, chock full of Spooky Tooth's own laid-back formula. Missed is the greyish "Hangman Hang My Shell on a Tree" from Spooky Two, which would have made a nice addition to the set. Nevertheless, this best-of does present listeners with Spooky Tooth's most worthwhile songs. The band's unconventional sound and eased style is prevalent on each of the tracks offered here.

The compositions of Hans Leo Hassler stand at the turn of style from late Renaissance polyphony to Venetian early Baroque sound development. Counterpoint scholarship is combined with highest grace and tenderness. With the Ensemble Currende under Erik van Nevel, a varied compilation of Hassler's sacred and secular works can be heard.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under Oramo with an exceptional quartet of soloists give a vivid and heartfelt interpretation of Smyth’s earliest large-scale choral work. Dame Ethel Mary Smyth, DBE was an English composer and a member of the women's suffrage movement. Her compositions include songs, works for piano, chamber music, orchestral works, choral works and operas. Smyth tended to be marginalized as a ‘woman composer’, as though her work could not be accepted as mainstream, yet when she produced more delicate compositions, they were criticized for not measuring up to the standard of her male competitors.

FIVE DISC SET (3 CD 37 tracks & 2 DVDs) Like the Boss (Bruce Springsteen), Southside Johnny aka John Lyon is from New Jersey, and of course the paths of the two and the members of the E-Street Band crossed many times. Especially with Steven Van Zandt aka Little Steven there was a long lasting friendship and Van Zandt produced the first three albums I Don't Want to Go Home (1976), This Time It's for Real (1977) and Hearts of Stone (1978) of Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, which were strongly influenced by Rhythm & Blues.The band gave their first German concert in 1977 at Hamburg's club Onkel Pö, and in October 1979 they played together with Mitch Ryder and Nils Lofgren at the 5th Rockpalast Night at Essen's Grugahalle. WDR was there for Rockpalast and recorded the concert. On March 26, 1992, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes gave a second concert for Rockpalast in Cologne's Live Music Hall, where Little Steven joined them on stage for four songs.

In the fall of 1972, The Allman Brothers Band was still grieving over the October,1971 motorcycle death of band founder and co-lead guitarist Duane Allman. Their future wasn't clear as a lot of their success was based on the interplay between Duane and Dickey Betts who ''rewrote the rules for how two rock guitarists can work together, completely scrapping the traditional rhythm/lead roles'' (Guitar World, 2009). That unique dynamic resulted in the release of ''Eat A Peach'' and ''At the Fillmore East'', to critical acclaim. The band turned to co-founder Betts who offered up ''Ramblin' Man'' and it was just the momentum needed. The upbeat country song resulted in the Allman's sole Top 10 song. ''Ramblin' Man'', peaking at #2 on Billboard's Hot 100. Dickey Betts was ranked #58 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list in 2003, and #61 on the 2011 list. He also wrote Allman Brother Band classics such as ''In Memory of Elizabeth Reed'' and ''Blue Sky'' that became radio and concert staples and they were pioneers of the emerging jam band scene with their mix of roadhouse blues and free form rock guitar solos, which again brought them enormous critical acclaim.

RARELY HEARD REHEARSAL BROADCASTS FROM 1966 & 1967 Cream made their unofficial live debut at Manchester s Twisted Wheel club on 29th July 1966. The group s debut album, Fresh Cream, produced by Robert Stigwood, was recorded in London between August and November 66, and released in December on React ion, Starwood s short lived label. Rehearsals for the album also took place in London during three sessions in August, September and November. The follow-up Cream album, Disraeli Gears - named after a roadie mis-pronounced the transmission system on a racing bike (derailleur gears) - was a quickly assembled affair that became a massive seller particularly in the US where it was the group s breakthrough record. Recorded in New York in May of 1967 and this time produced by future Mountain bassist Felix Pappalardi, who also co-wrote two of the record s tracks, the album came out less than a year after Cream s debut, in November 1967. Rehearsals again took place in London during March and April of 67. Six of the rehearsal sessions undertaken for Fresh Cream and Disraeli Gears were broadcast live on off-shore Pirate Radio during 1966 and 1967, the first time any such occurrence had taken place. These broadcasts are now featured in edited versions on this CD, the first time these rare recordings have been released.
