The sole solo-album by Australian composer and instrumentalist Greg Sneddon, originally released in 1974, is now available on CD. Musically one may expect a tasteful delivery of space rock, pop and strong keyboard driven progressive rock. Sneddon would later become a founding member of Men At Work.

10cc's second album was the next phase in what guitarist Eric Stewart called the band's "masterplan to control the universe. The Sweet, Slade, and Gary Glitter are all very valuable pop," he proclaimed, "but it's fragile because it's so dependent on a vogue. We don't try to appeal to one audience, or aspire to instant stardom, we're satisfied to move ahead a little at a time as long as we're always moving forward." Sheet Music, perhaps the most widely adventurous album of what would become a wildly adventurous year, would more than justify that claim.

In many ways, the mixed collection of live and studio recordings on Stars & Stripes Forever accomplished for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and rock music what Sweetheart of the Rodeo failed to do for or with the Byrds, showing the rock band plunging deeply into country music. Two years in the making, it incorporated new studio cuts and live tracks recorded at five concerts over a two-year period, as well as interview material with guest fiddle player Vassar Clements. The mix works better than just about any genuine country (as opposed to country-rock) effort ever done by a rock band, mostly because the band was so careful in their recording and editing, and they gave themselves time to get this stuff just the way they wanted it. Beyond the excellent concert renditions of "Mr. Bojangles" or "The Battle of New Orleans" (which became a single in the wake of this album), and covers of Hank Williams songs…

For the first time since a clutch of incomplete demos and outtakes were unearthed from Marc Bolan's mid-'60s vault in 1972, and sent into the world as the (hastily withdrawn) Hard on Love album, the compilers haven't simply recycled the 20 solo and T. Rex cuts that made up the original track listing, they have also scoured both private and record company collections for a full picture of every track Bolan recorded during 1966-1967 and, for the first time, brought his early years into the same vivid focus as his later career. The 20 songs that comprised the original Hard on Love/Beginning of Doves album, plus the "Perfumed Garden" bonus track appended to Retroactive's 1998 remastering, are now joined by a further 16 performances, including both alternate takes and previously unreleased songs.

Chris Neal is an Australian composer and multi instrumentalist who has done most of his tune smithing far from the world of progressive rock. His focus has been on soundtracks for movies and television for much of his 40 plus years in the music business. What brings Chris Neal to the attention of the progressive rock community is the album "Winds Of Isis", an Australian rarity from 1974. In this work Neal offers up large doses of Mellotron vibes, plus gives us passages where he could be mistaken for Mike Oldfield or David Greenslade or Keith Emerson in the given moment as he takes on playing duties for almost all the instruments used. "Winds Of Isis" is largely a keyboard-driven work, though Neal proves he is a bona fide guitarist and drummer as well as someone prepared to put almost anything through the Mu-tron synthesiser.

Albert Marcœur is a French composer, singer and songwriter. He began his career in the early 1970s. His body of work mixes melodic, rhythmic and sonic experimentations with fancy nursery rhymes, humorous and offbeat lyrics. In France he has been called "the French Frank Zappa". Albert Marcœur was born on December 12 1947, in Dijon, France. During his formal education of clarinet at the National Academy of Music and Dance of Dijon, Marcoeur actively participated in many straightforward college rock 'n roll bands. Closing an end to his formal training Marcoeur's musical visions had gravitated towards the experimental facets of music, wishing "to do nothing else but make my own music".

The great thing about a solo album from someone like Bill Wyman, of the Rolling Stones, is that quality musicianship and high-profile guest appearances are all but a given. The unfortunate aspect, though, is that the Stones bassist was never known for his songwriting. In the case of Monkey Grip, the first claim holds true (with guest appearances by Dr. John, Lowell George, and Leon Russell, the album is a solid affair musically), while the issue of Wyman's songwriting ability leaves the listener pleasantly surprised.

Combining the Sensational Alex Harvey Band's third and fourth albums, The Impossible Dream and Tomorrow Belongs To Me, offers perhaps the archetypal vision of Alex Harvey, as his long-nurtured alter-ego, the comic book hero Vambo, finally burst out of imagination to take on a life of his own on stages across the world. Yet what would become the group's most successful albums also stand as their patchiest.

Jo Jones shifted the timekeeping role of the drums from the bass drum to the hi-hat cymbal, greatly influencing all swing and bop drummers. Buddy Rich and Louie Bellson were just two musicians who learned from his light but forceful playing, as Jones swung the Count Basie Orchestra with just the right accents and sounds. After growing up in Alabama, Jones worked as a drummer and tap dancer with carnival shows. He joined Walter Page's Blue Devils in Oklahoma City in the late '20s. After a period with Lloyd Hunter's band in Nebraska, Jones moved to Kansas City in 1933, joining Count Basie's band the following year. He went with Basie to New York in 1936 and with Basie, Freddie Green, and Walter Page, he formed one of the great rhythm sections…

Maggie Bell was lead singer of the Scottish rock band Stone the Crows, who broke up after their guitarist was fatally electrocuted onstage. Managed by Peter Grant (Led Zeppelin) and produced by Jerry Wexler (Aretha Franklin), Bell made a staggeringly good solo debut that seemed to position her as the heir to Janis Joplin (even covering "A Woman Left Lonely"). But she never broke through commercially, not even when Jimmy Page played guitar on her followup album — the only way she surpassed Joplin was by staying alive.

By 1974, Melanie had shed the worst of her vocal excesses (along with half her audience, unfortunately). Madrugada explored a few new musical ideas. "The Actress" found Melanie striding boldly into high-flown, fretful autobiography with some success. Her attempt at the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," a frantic orchestral arrangement, is richer for some deft chord progressions not found on the original. As a performer, she was displaying more skill and restraint than ever before. As a songwriter, there were signs that her gifts were on the wane; Madrugada was half covers (including Randy Newman and Goffin & King), and some of the originals, particularly the wispy "Pine and Feather," seemed mere exercises in quaintness. But everything was immaculately produced (by husband Peter Schekeryk) – the glossy, professional mix of rock with a large string section was clearly safe territory for Melanie. And nothing on Madrugada is anything less than pleasant.
