The Very Best of Osibisa is a 3-CD set compilation bringing together three Osibisa's albums: Welcome Home, Ojah Awake and Africa We Go Go, released in 2001 by Trilogie under catalog #205886-349. Do not confuse with other compilations released under the same name, such as "The Very Best of Osibisa" released in 2009 by Golden Stool label. Osibisa is a Ghanaian-Caribbean Afro rock band founded in London in the late 1960s by four expatriate West African and three London-based Caribbean musicians. Osibisa was the most successful and longest lived of the African-heritage bands in London, alongside such contemporaries as Assagai, Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath, Demon Fuzz, Black Velvet, and Noir, and was largely responsible for the establishment of world music and Afro-rock as a marketable genre. The original band that featured on the first three studio albums was universally known as the "Beautiful Seven", also a song on their album Woyaya.

You Are What You Is was another of Frank Zappa's periodic post-Over-Nite Sensation efforts that concentrated on tight songwriting supported by satirical lyrics. Originally a two-record set featuring 20 songs, You Are What You Is skewered a variety of targets, from teenagers, punk rock, disco, and country music to the media, yuppies, the beauty-and-fitness industry, upper-class vice, religious hypocrisy, suicide, and the military draft – all the trappings of Reagan-era America. Occasionally, Zappa's satirical points seem ill-thought-out, if not unnecessarily malicious; "Jumbo Go Away" is perhaps the most offensive song in Zappa's huge canon of potentially offensive songs, a tale of a whining, VD-riddled groupie who is portrayed as deserving the punch in the face she gets from an irritated musician.

Danish quintet David Miilmann Group return with You Belong, their third album and a vibrant, uplifting statement built around guitarist David Miilmann’s distinctive slide guitar voice. Rooted in soul and blues but shaped within a genre-defying jazz context, the band brings a life-affirming energy to music that moves between groove, melody, and open improvisation with ease.

This is a bootleg album, released by Frank Zappa without enhancement. It contains a performance by The Mothers of Invention in 1968, at a time when the group was evolving from its primarily vocal pop-rock sound of 1966-1967 into a more instrumental, jazzy approach. (In fact, this album is almost entirely instrumental.) Much of the material played later turned up on the 1969 Uncle Meat album. In that sense, this album is redundant, although it does provide an interesting look at a particularly inspired period in the band's career. Sound quality is good.

Carlos Santana Because his pioneering Latin rock band shared his surname, it's easy to conflate Carlos Santana with Santana, especially since the guitarist functioned as the group's leader and spokesperson. Nevertheless, Carlos ventured outside of the confines of his namesake band to pursue adventurous collaborations with jazz musicians – his first non-band album, 1973's Love Devotion Surrender, was recorded with John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra; his second was made with Alice Coltrane – in addition to smoother material, like the kind showcased on 1983's Havana Moon and 1987's Grammy-winning Blues for Salvador. Throughout these solo excursions, as well as his work with his band, one thing remained constant:

    Genre: Jazz Rock, Prog Rock

Wazoo is a live album by Frank Zappa, posthumously released in 2007. It is a 2-CD set consisting of a concert with "The Mothers of Invention/Hot Rats/Grand Wazoo" 20-piece big band in Boston on September 24, 1972. It is the last concert of a brief series of shows that marked Zappa's return to the stage after his forced temporary retirement from the touring scene due to the injuries he suffered from an assault at a concert in December 1971. The material showcases Zappa's endavors into jazz-based music, and many of the compositions were featured on the 1972 studio albums The Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka. Rehearsals leading to these albums and concerts are documented on Joe's Domage (2004), while Imaginary Diseases (2006) presents live recordings with a stripped-down version of the big band named "Petite Wazoo." Wazoo is the third installment on the Vaulternative Records label that is dedicated to the posthumous release of complete Zappa concerts (following the releases FZ:OZ and Buffalo).

This is a bootleg album, released by Frank Zappa without enhancement, and also available as part of the Beat The Boots! #2 boxed set. It's a two-CD set that presents a nearly complete live performance by the 1970-71 "Flo & Eddie" edition of The Mothers, featuring lead vocalists Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, and recorded December 4, 1971. As such, it begins with an extended instrumental introduction leading into "Peaches En Regalia," and then there is a combination of 200 Motels material and oldies like "Call Any Vegetable." Sound quality is good, and the performance level is high.

British prog rock act Skin Alley were a farsighted collaboration between Thomas Crimble (keyboards/bass/vocals), Alvin Pope (drums), Krzysztof Henryk Justkiewicz (keyboards), and Bob James (sax/guitar). Formed in the late '60s, they made inroads quickly and found themselves signed to CBS for their self-titled debut in 1969. That album, and its 1970 follow-up, To Pagham & Beyond, saw the band in top prog form – a pastiche of folk, jazz, and rock that, although well traveled by this time, managed to delight more than a few critics with its freshness and vitality. Crimble and Pope moved on later that year and were replaced by Nick Graham (formerly of Atomic Rooster) and Tony Knight (ex-Bronx Cheer), respectively. With new members in place, Skin Alley's sound took on a more polished, mainstream approach and began prominently featuring the complex string, woodwind, and brass arrangements of Graham. Their jazz-rock fusion sound was still there, but with decidedly more polish and sophistication.

Trey Anastasio Since co-founding the seminal improv rock outfit Phish in 1983, guitarist, composer, and songwriter Trey Anastasio has explored a wide variety of musical pathways ranging from atonal fugues and elaborate charts with Phish to adventurous free jazz on his first solo project, Surrender to the Air (1996), to collaborations with the likes of Tom Marshall, Les Claypool, Philip Glass, Stewart Copeland, and others. Anastasio pursued many of these projects during the 2000s, a period when Phish embarked on several extended hiatuses and breakups. After releasing a shiny, pop-oriented eponymous solo album in 2002, the guitarist formed Oysterhead – a group featuring Claypool and Copeland – and instituted a large solo band that supported him both on record and in the studio.

Bruce Hornsby Possessing a breezy, nonchalant style that belies his technical gifts, pianist Bruce Hornsby writes powerful songs from the heart that touch on several distinctly American traditions: pop, jazz, bluegrass, and 1960s soul. He worked for a while as a studio player and songwriter, and had his first hit in 1986 with the stirring and philosophical "The Way It Is," a single he recorded with his backing band the Range. An unexpected number one hit, "The Way It Is" kicked off a period where Hornsby straddled the line between heartland rock and adult contemporary pop, reaching the Top Ten with such singles as "Mandolin Rain" and "The Valley Road." Hornsby ultimately rejected the musical mainstream, disbanding the Range so he could tour with the Grateful Dead in the early '90s, then exploring a variety of adventurous musical fusions on his own that decade and with the Noisemakers in the 2000s.
