It's a safe bet to expect the unexpected in regards to any new Lambchop effort, but the cryptically titled (and beautifully packaged) What Another Man Spills is the band's most consistently surprising and deliriously eclectic outing to date, with new twists around every corner. While it's their loveliest record since How I Quit Smoking, that album's countrypolitan gauze is largely a thing of the past, replaced here by a dreamy, jazz-like patina which proves a remarkably versatile backdrop not only for Kurt Wagner's originals but for a vast range of covers, from Dump's "It's Not Alright" to Curtis Mayfield's "Give Me Your Love (Love Song)." The latter is easily the most jaw-dropping track on What Another Man Spills, with the group easily slipping into the song's soulful groove without a hint of irony, not even in Wagner's amazingly Prince-like falsetto; a later cover of the Frederick Knight smash "I've Been Lonely for So Long," while less surprising, is no less engaging, further solidifying Lambchop's growing debt to the Stax/Volt sound.

In her second solo collection, Julia's voice dances between hopeful and weary, defeated and desperately alive. Composed in California, refined in France and sculpted in Australia and India, as the summer turned to fall in New York City, they poured through her hands to the ears and hands of Producer Thomas Bartlett who has worked with Doveman, Antony & the Johnsons and The National and is currently producing upcoming record by Glen Hansard. Bartlett expertly creates living and breathing sounds along with the most understatedly talented musicians on 'By The Horns'. The sessions were co-produced by Patrick Dillett, equally known for his work recording powerful female vocalists like Mary J Blige and Mariah Carey, and as a producer for David Byrne and Arto Lindsay and mixed Julia's first solo album 'The Memory Machine'. 'By The Horns' signals a great transition; an introduction of Julia Stone as a singular artist of her own voice, the birth of a mature voice of formidable strength and delicate insight, out of the shadow of past successes.

Listening to this, it's easy to believe that June Tabor was made to sing these old border ballads, tales of the uneasy coexistence of families in the marches between England and Scotland. Her dark voice is well-suited to the texts, which are often bloody and vengeful, and quite certainly epic – in some respects, the very essence of British balladry, whether it's "The Battle of Otterburn," with its gloriously textured Kathryn Tickell arrangement, or the demanding "The Duke of Athole's Nurse," where Martin Simpson is reunited with Tabor, his guitar offering shining counterpoint to her voice. The songs, tried and tested over the centuries, are wonderful in themselves, but Tabor's presentation of them brings them fully to life, like "The Cruel Mother." Harrowing at the best of times, it becomes pure torment in her hands. And her "Sir Patrick Spens" makes the old Fairport Convention version sound like a playground romp. Intensity has always been one of Tabor's fortes, and here she takes full advantage of the opportunity to indulge it.

.The Mamas & the Papas Gold is a two-disc, 32-track set that does an admirable job of mixing the major hits with well chosen album tracks. Unlike MCA's 1991 similar package Creeque Alley, solo tracks are ignored with the focus being only on the five studio albums recorded as a group: If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, The Mamas & the Papas, Deliver, The Papas & the Mamas and (thankfully) only one track from the contractual obligation swan song People Like Us…

First, the bad news. When the 21st century arrived, most of the Immaculate Fools' '80s and '90s albums were out of print in the United States – the Brits weren't nearly as well known in North America as they were in Spain. Now, the good news: The band's albums are quite absorbing, if you can track them down. Released by Sony in Spain and Continuum in the U.S., 1992's The Toy Shop is a fine example of the Immaculate Fools' appealing sound – a sound that combines Irish/Celtic touches with influences that range from the Psychedelic Furs and David Bowie to Bob Dylan. It's an interesting mix, certainly, and one that works impressively well on tuneful, melodic tracks like "Heaven Down Here," "Good Times," and "Cotillas." In the '80s and '90s, there were plenty of Irish and Scottish rockers who brought a Celtic influence to the table, but among British bands, that type of approach wasn't nearly as common.
