Songs in Red and Gray is the sixth studio album release by New York-based singer/songwriter and musician Suzanne Vega. The album was Vega's final album for A&M Records (with whom she had been since 1983) and also marks the divorce from her husband and producer Mitchell Froom.

Style Council's first proper album Cafe Bleu was one of their better efforts, but it indicated the group's fatal flaw – a tendency to be too eclectic and overambitious. Amidst the lazy jazz instrumentals, many of them courtesy of Mick Talbot, Paul Weller inserted several solid soul-tinged pop songs, including "My Ever Changing Moods," "Headstart for Happiness," "You're the Best Thing," and "Here's One That Got Away." However, that doesn't excuse the rap experiment, "A Gospel." The album was later released with a slightly different running order as My Ever Changing Moods in the U.S.; the American edition included the U.K. hit "A Solid Bond in Your Heart".

Don't Look Back is an album released by Blues legend John Lee Hooker in 1997 that was produced by Van Morrison, who also performed duets with Hooker on four of the tracks. The album was the Grammy winner in the Best Traditional Blues Album category in 1998. The title duet by Hooker and Morrison also won a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

Easily Tikaram's most polished album to date. As usual, several of the songs sound like rough drafts, but for the first time since the raw poetry of her debut, Ancient Heart, Tikaram has come up with enough knockout numbers to justify the record's release. "I Might Be Crying" features an inventive arrangement in which a full string and brass orchestra merely underscores a sweeping landscape of vocal harmonies. "Yodelling Song" is a fresh, manic jam with acoustic guitars, fiddles, bongos and yodellers. Tikaram's eccentric folk-pop has always been creatively produced, but for this record the husky-voiced songwriter has penned some melodies well worth the studio time.

Cave also had an approach to collaboration that made his backing band, the Bad Seeds, an integral part of his creative vision, even as their membership changed and their sound evolved over the space of three decades of fury and eloquence. This 1958 release, recorded the same year as Art Blakey's canonical album Moanin', bears little resemblance to that more famous release. While the personnel on Holiday for Skins features some of the finest players of the hard bop era (including drummer Philly Joe Jones and trumpeter Donald Byrd), the music on the album draws its inspiration directly from African and Latin folk forms. This is especially evident on tracks like "The Feast" and "Aghano," which feature circular drum patterns and chanting from the bandmembers. Tunes like "Mirage," however, blend these exotic sounds with a more straightforward bop vocabulary, resulting in the set's most engaging moments. As one of the more adventurous dates from Blue Note's '50s period, Holiday for Skins is an intriguing listen.

In 2010 Joe recorded a lengthy session at BBC’s Maida Vale Studios, which was broadcast live on Jones’s programme.

THE RARE ALTERNATIVE CUTS Steely Dan s fourth studio album Katy Lied, released in 1975 by ABC Records, was certified gold and peaked at No. 13 on the US charts with the single Black Friday reaching No. 37. The record was the first after the disbandment of the original quintet; most of the original members had departed during a rift over touring and recording schedules. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, who had been increasingly using session musicians in the studio on prior albums, continued on with numerous prominent Los Angeles area studio musicians. Katy Lied marks the first appearance of singer Michael McDonald on a Steely Dan album. Jeff Porcaro, then only 20 years old, played drums on all the songs bar-one, and it also marked the first appearance of Larry Carlton, who played guitar on Daddy Don't Live in That New York City No More . A year later, Dan s fifth hit the stores. The Royal Scam was equally as poetic, jazz fuelled and joyously immediate as it predecessor, and critically acclaimed in similar tones of commendation, At the end of 76, Messrs Becker and Fagin appeared on college radio in New York where they played more than 80 minutes of rare outtakes and demos made during the recording of Katy Lied and Royal Scam, revealing a raft of alternative takes, obscure cuts and other studio paraphernalia This CD now makes the content of this rarely known-about broadcast available for all to hear.

Broadcast across 67 countries to a worldwide audience of 600 million people, the 1988 Nelson Mandela Tribute Concert, which took place on the great man’s 70th birthday at Wembley Stadium in London, featured performances from a host of top artists of the day. Simple Minds, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Stevie Wonder and numerous others all played on the day, but probably the finest performance came from Dire Straits who had recently split up, but were persuaded to reform for the event, bringing in Eric Clapton on guitar and backing vocals to accompany them. Signed on to close the show, performing a superb set made up of Dire Straits classics alongside a glorious version of Clapton’s ‘Wonderful Tonight’, the whole event was sealed by quite staggering musicianship.
