Tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins' first recording after ending a surprising three-year retirement found the great saxophonist sounding very similar to how he had played in 1959, although he would soon start investigating freer forms. In a pianoless quartet with guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Ben Riley, Rollins explores four standards (including "Without a Song" and "God Bless the Child") plus two fiery originals, highlighted by the title cut. The interplay between Rollins and Hall is consistently impressive, making this set a near-classic and a very successful comeback.

One of the seminal documents of the progressive rock era, a record that made its way into the collections of millions of high-school kids who never heard of Modest Mussorgsky and knew nothing of Russia's Nationalist "Five." It does some violence to Mussorgsky, but Pictures at an Exhibition is also the most energetic and well-realized live release in Emerson, Lake & Palmer's catalog, and it makes a fairly compelling case for adapting classical pieces in this way. At the time, it introduced "classical rock" to millions of listeners, including the classical community, most of whose members regarded this record as something akin to an armed assault. The early-'70s live sound is a little crude by today's standards, but the tightness of the playing (Carl Palmer is especially good) makes up for any sonic inadequacies…

Following four years after The Drop, Drawn From Life sees Brian Eno collaborating with German DJ J. Peter Schwalm. (Music for Onmyo-Ji, a previous Eno/Schwalm work from 2000, was released in Japan only.) Those who soured at the distant crispness of The Drop will find this to be a more inviting listen, even more so than Eno's 1996 collaboration with bassist Jah Wobble on Spinner. Jazzy, shuffling rhythms and strings that sway from cutting to sighing lay the foundation of most of the tracks, with some repetitive nonmusical effects often falling somewhere in the mix. If there is a fault of the record, it's that the vocals often get in the way of some fine background listening. If you don't have an affinity for Laurie Anderson's voice, you might be troubled that "Like Pictures, Pt. 2," which otherwise happens to be one of the record's most melodic and tranquil tracks, is interrupted by her intonations…

Vocalist Bobby McFerrin, best known for his pop hit, "Don't Worry, Be Happy," is a talented vocalist and all-around musician. This recording is a true reflection of his genius, and it takes jazz-fusion to another level. Joining McFerrin is the great pianist Chick Corea, with Gil Goldstein on accordion, Cameroonian bassist Richard Bona, Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista, and drummer Omar Hakim. Their music is a 21st-century blend of Return to Forever and Weather Report. McFerrin's superhuman vocalese investigates and invigorates a number of musical genres. Corea's spellbinding piano motifs grace the calypso-like "Invocation."

Until the late 1680s, Henry Purcell composed almost exclusively for the royal court. But when the monarchy decided to reduce its expenditure on music in 1690, he joined the United Company, a London theatre company, and devoted himself to composing for its productions. These took varied forms, with operas such as King Arthur (1691), The Fairy Queen (1692) and The Indian Queen (1695) but also spoken plays with music, such as The Virtuous Wife (1695). It is excerpts from these works that are presented in Tyrannic Love. Compositions by Purcell’s colleagues or followers John Blow, John Eccles, Jeremiah Clarke and Daniel Purcell complete the programme.

The RIAS-Kammerchor Berlin and its chief conductor Justin Doyle present Handel’s Messiah, together with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and an all-British quartet of outstanding soloists, consisting of Julia Doyle (soprano), Tim Mead (countertenor), Thomas Hobbs (tenor) and Roderick Williams (bass). Messiah (1742) is not only Handel’s most famous work, but equally one of the cornerstones of British choral culture. Over the years, a tradition of mass performances full of pomp and circumstance took root, with the "Hallelujah" as a showstopper. This new period-instruments recording, however, aims to bring the piece back to the size and intimacy of the earliest performances.

"Cuban Soul-18 Kilates" is Cassiano's third studio album, released in 1976, and stands as a milestone in Brazilian soul music. It combines Brazilian rhythms with classic American soul elements, creating a unique fusion. Cassiano's smooth, soulful vocal style and the album’s larger-than-life arrangements, reminiscent of Tim Maia's sound, give it a rich, deep feel. The standout track, ‘Onda,’ is a relaxing anthem evoking beach vibes that has become a DJ’s favorite in recent years and also made it into several compilations. "Cuban Soul-18 Kilates" has earned cult status over the years, securing its place as one of the most coveted Brazilian records of all time. Remastered from the original tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl. This release is part of a new reissue series that will include many other outstanding Brazilian classics like Evinha “Cartão Postal” or Gerson King Combo.

Made in England. The remix album with no composer…the track with no name. Unlike other remix albums Chinese Whispers is a hermetically sealed cyclical recording remix project, but with no original track to begin with. All the artists participating had no idea who they were remixing. They were working in the dark, samples arriving anonymously. All they were aware of was who was involved, who these audio snippets might be from. Stereolab provided the original unconnected miscellaneous samples (ie not from an existing track) to start the ball rolling, and nine remixes later were given the final samples from the last artist's track (in this case T Power) back, to create their final track.

The use of slide guitar techniques within blues music is usually taken as a given, although the genesis of the form is not the easiest to trace. It is widely agreed that the roots of slide guitar playing lie in Africa. There was also another probable route via the Hawaiian Islands, they developed their 'slack key' playing style and began to add the use of metal held along the fretboard. However the story is complicated by the famed composer W.C. Handy who reported witnessing a blues player at a train station using a knife blade along the strings as early as 1903. It's quite likely that all these scenarios fed into the mix, and by the later 1920s blues players were often using the style. Our collection covers a wide period of time from the late 1920s onwards, and features many well known names and highly influential songs.
