Imagine you're driving down a rural two-lane road somewhere in the South, and you come upon a little beer joint. You pull over and go inside where there's a band–three guitars, bass and drums and a couple of female backing vocalists–playing some dirt road blues. The mood is loose, the band is tight and the lead singer has a voice that sounds like he's spent a lot of time traveling up-and-down dirt roads living and singing the blues. That's the sound of High, Lonesome, and Then Some, Todd Snider's 15th studio album.

"The sound of this formation allowed me to fetch themes from different musical worlds, from jazz to brass bands or street performers. I called this project INDIA as a reference to the title of the album I first recorded as a band leader: CHINE. This music is composed of melodies, dances, and improvisations supported by tenacious beats and rhythms. This brings out memories of a theatre on the docks of Calcutta, of a long train in the countryside, of a night in the Kalighat Kali Temple, of a brass band during Hindu Festival Ganesh Chaturthi… I wish that people hear the sounds of a faraway place that feels more like a dream than reality. I have been playing with this band which includes Sarah Murcia, Benjamin Moussay, and Christophe Lavergne since 2015. After “Loin dans les terres” and “Characters on a Wall” (ECM Records), this is our third opus, for which we were joined by trumpeter Olivier Laisney."

"Rosie" is the eighth studio album by folk-rock outfit Fairport Convention, released in 1973. The album was the first to feature Australian singer-songwriter guitarist Trevor Lucas and American lead guitarist Jerry Donahue. Both had previously played with ex-Fairport Sandy Denny, to whom Lucas was married, in the short-lived Fotheringay. Here they had effectively replaced Simon Nicol who had quit Fairport to join another ex-member Ashley Hutchings in The Albion Band, thus leaving the band with no original members until he rejoined in 1976. Remastered reissue includes previously unreleased bonus tracks, 'Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John' (Live), 'The Hen's March Through the Midden…' (Live), 'Rosie' (Live), & 'The Claw' (Live).

Unstoppable London-based keyboardist and composer Greg Foat returns with his new album, '6 Days in Leysin'. Greg's first memory with the piano goes all the way back to his Aunt's house at aged 3 - where he fell off the piano stool. Since then, his relationship with the piano has evolved into a fulfilling, and successful career. He began taking an interest in composing at the age of 11, and truly ignited his love for Jazz after attending a workshop with Jeff Clyne, Olaf Vas, Trevor Tomkins and Nick Weldon at the age of 15. He then studied jazz at Middlesex University, followed by 6 months in Sweden on an Erasmus grant which lead to his first professional studio session there at 21. Greg has worked as a professional musician ever since, and has moulded a wonderfully multifaceted career within the Jazz music genre.

No matter what stylistic path they take, Green Carnation have never shied away from grand, gloomy statements.
Founded in the early '90s by Emperor's former bassist Tchort, the Norwegians quickly amassed a cult following thanks to one of the most ambitious epics in metal history. Even before going on hiatus during the mid-2000s, the ever-evolving auteurs still flashed a flare for the dramatic by performing their acoustic verses underneath a mountain dam. However, there was one tale - or three, to be exact - that continued to elude them. Until now. With A Dark Poem, Green Carnation have finally finished their masterpiece.
The idea for an album trilogy stems from Green Carnation’s earliest yesteryears, but the first part of A Dark Poem cites various passages from across their illustrious cannon…

The Doobie Brothers' third long-player was the charm, their most substantial and consistent album to date, and one that rode the charts for a year. It was also a study in contrasts, Tom Johnston's harder-edged, bolder rocking numbers balanced by Patrick Simmons' more laid-back country-rock ballad style. The leadoff track, Johnston's "Natural Thing," melded the two, opening with interlocking guitars and showcasing the band's exquisite soaring harmonies around a beautiful melody, all wrapped up in a midtempo beat – the result was somewhere midway between Allman Brothers-style virtuosity and Eagles/Crosby & Nash-type lyricism, which defined this period in the Doobies' history and gave them a well-deserved lock on the top of the charts. Next up was the punchy, catchy "Long Train Runnin'," a piece they'd been playing for years as an instrumental – a reluctant Johnston was persuaded by producer Ted Templeman to write lyrics to it and record the song, and the resulting track became the group's next hit.

Since their first encounter in May 2011, Lavinia Meijer has worked with some frequency with Philip Glass, even though he has never written solo works specifically for the harp. However, many of his piano works and piano transcriptions, after minor adjustments, prove to be well suited to the modern pedal harp. Initially, Lavinia Meijer added Glass's five movement Metamorphosis to her repertoire, on the instigation of the undersigned, the Amsterdam gallery owner Robert Malasch and the American composer himself. After a first and successful performance (in the composer's presence) in the Amsterdam 'pop temple' The Melkweg, a first official recording was made for Channel Classics in June 2011 in the Dutch town of Schiedam. Since this recording was exclusively intended for a brief national marketing campaign, it has now been followed up by this complete Glass CD for international distribution. Lavinia Meijer is recognized worldwide as one of the most successful rising stars. Besides performing the standard harp repertoire Lavinia Meijer is very keen on playing modern music.

Though the band emerged on the fringes of nü-metal, one of metal's more unfortunate pushes into the mainstream, Deftones' steady shift toward a more artful, experimental sound has made them one of the more enduring and influential groups to come out of the '90s. In their continued exploration of the intersection of heaviness and harmony, Koi No Yokan finds the band returning with a warm, dreamy sound that feels more like heavy dream pop or shoegaze than light metal. Always finding new ways to use old tools, the driving sounds on the album feel more like they're meant to envelop the listener than enrage them, with a sonic gulf - created by Chino Moreno's soaring vocals and Stephen Carpenter's shuddering, extended scale riffs - so large and inviting, it feels like the only option is to dive in and explore its depths…

Hearing this album for the first time, it's easy to see why Steeleye Span declined to tour with the Dransfields - with all due respect to Maddy Prior and company, they'd have been shown-up and then some, based on the evidence here. From the crisp playing on acoustic and low-wattage electric guitars, and charismatic yet honest and unaffected lead and harmony singing to the diverse song selection - all part of a defined song cycle - the album was as perfect an example of electric British folk music as it was released in the '70s, and easily a rival for anything this side of Fairport Convention's best work. The voices and the playing strike a perfect balance between the old traditionalist school out of which the Dransfields came and the newer folk-rock school that they'd only begun to embrace a couple of years earlier, and the album itself also gives a nod to the burgeoning progressive folk-rock genre of the era (best embodied by acts such as Gryphon)…
