These singers harmonize through mysterious songs about strange and ordinary, things–through beautiful female lead singing, with fascinating percussion and horn background, and bass that is perfect to balance the variety of harmonies. This is not like Manhattan Transfer, no, it is more personal, more immediate. The impression is latin and contemplative, while being no-nonsense and straightforward in expression. It is a wonderful mix of the familiar and the unfamiliar, the new and the understandable.

One of the more exciting jazz musicians to emerge in the first decade of the 21st century, Baltimore-based pianist Lafayette Gilchrist blends progressive 1960s post-bop experimentation with driving, accessible grooves. TOWARD THE SHINING PATH, Gilchrist’s second album, builds on the strengths of his debut to deliver a thoroughly appealing post-modern jazz ride. Whether exploring loose-limbed stride-funk fusions (“New Jack”), riff-driven jams (“Elephant Dance”), or lush, winding melodies (“Unsolved, Unresolved”), Gilchrist displays deft skill with a melodic line that is always surprising. Fans of contemporary pianists such as Jason Moran and Brad Mehldau would be well advised to check out this sophomore release from an up-and-coming talent.

Cowboys from Hell is the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band Pantera, released on July 24, 1990 by Atco Records. It marked the band's major label debut and their first collaboration with producer Terry Date. It is considered one of the first ever groove metal albums. On September 14, 2010 a 20th anniversary edition was released with a remastered mix from the original analog recordings. The expanded edition features a bonus CD of previously unreleased live recordings and the Alive and Hostile EP. The deluxe edition features an additional third CD with the previously unreleased demo track "The Will to Survive" (parts of the song were later used in the song "This Love" from Vulgar Display of Power) along with demo versions of ten songs from the original album.

The Deutsche Schubert-Lied-Edition presents all Schubert’s Lieder, over 700 songs, grouped according to the poets who inspired him. Thanks to Bärenreiter’s Neue Schubert-Ausgabe, which uses primary sources, the performers have been able to benefit from the most recent research of the editorial team. The third volume devoted to settings of poems by Goethe includes the best known song of all, Erlkönig. These songs for male voice range from 1814 to the 1820s, some in Goethe’s preferred strophic form, others through-composed.

Viktor Lazlo is the self-titled second studio album by French-Belgian singer Viktor Lazlo. Belgium was responsible to host the Eurovision Song Contest after Sandra Kim had won in 1986 with her song J'aime la vie. Lazlo was asked to host the event as she is fluent in several languages and thus her self-titled album became very successful all over Europe, entering the Top 20 album charts in Holland, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It spent 19 weeks on the German album charts. The first single off the album was Breathless, which was co-written by Lazlo herself and features backing vocals by James Ingram and Bunny DeBarge. An official video was shot for the song and she also performed it at the beginning of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1987. The song reached No. 7 on the Belgian single charts. The songs Take Me and You Are My Man were also released as singles.

Purification through Violence is the first full-length album by the death metal band Dying Fetus. Purification Through Violence was reissued in January 2011 by Relapse. It included the bonus tracks "Beaten into Submission" (1997 rehearsal demo) and "Raped on the Altar" (live in Herbolzheim, Germany, 1998).

Recorded live at the Kit Kat Klub in New York on November 19, 1999. The show was recorded and filmed for a webcast the following month via Liveonline.net. Originally released officially only as a 12-track promotional release, it was widely available as a bootleg release with same 12 tracks. In April 2021 it was officially released as part 6 of Brilliant Live Adventures [1995-1999] series of six limited edition live albums.

During Claudio Abbado’s time as chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker, the great symphonic repertoire naturally formed the core of his artistic work, and it was almost forgotten just what an important role the music theatre of his Italian homeland played in his life – after all, he had led La Scala in Milan from 1968 to 1986. Just how special the works of Verdi were to him could be heard in the New Year’s Eve Concert from 2000 which, with famous scenes and arias, rang in the Verdi year 2001 when the music world commemorated the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death.

Bobby Jaspar recorded this album December 19 and 20, 1958 at the Hoche studio, Paris. While this was recorded in Paris, Bobby had been living in the US for two years. What makes the album special to me is the laid back feel that reminds me more of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Jaspar did a collaboration with Milt Jackson the year before ( Bags & Flutes ), which may account for the way this session was produced. It also features Bobby exclusively on flute, further giving it that MJQ feel. Contrast this album with his saxophone playing on Cool Jazz Sounds (a great compilation by the way) and you will hear what I am talking about.

Described by producer Shu-Fang Wang as "an imaginary soundtrack originally composed for a film story set in Taipei," Before the Light gives the music of ECM recording artist Ketil Bjørnstad a cinematic twist. For this album, the pianist has written a handful of romantic melodies and atmospheric moods. The former are presented in different arrangements scattered throughout the album; the latter often include guitar soundscapes and programmed rhythm tracks. Bjørnstad is accompanied by guitarist Eivind Aarset, viola player Nora Taksdal, and keyboardist Kjetil Bjerkestrand. Each one of these short pieces (none over six minutes) makes a melodic statement that could be qualified as being quintessential ECM. .

This 1998 CD reissues Dewey Redman's entire The Ear of the Behearer album (although it leaves out an alternate take of "Interconnection" that was released on a different set), plus four of the seven selections from his Coincide record of a year later. Some of the music is quite adventurous and free, while other tracks include some freebop, a struttin' blues ("Boody"), and quieter ballads. Redman, a distinctive tenor saxophonist, actually plays alto on five of the first six selections; he is less memorable (although no less exploratory) on the smaller horn.

This first matchup on records between pianist Oscar Peterson and vibraphonist Milt Jackson was so logical that it is surprising it did not occur five years earlier…
