Recorded in 1992 in Massachusetts, this pairing of veteran saxophonist and composer Oliver Lake and composer and pianist Donal Fox, which is completely impromptu, is a work of real pleasure to listen to. What is happening on the bandstand between these two is extemporaneous composition and deep listening, extemporaneous because there is great humor and warmth in the way formal compositions – such as Lake's "Coumous" – are turned around and worked out to suit whatever mood strikes the pair's fancy.

Stan Getz’s great talent was universally acclaimed by music fans and fellow musicians alike. His playing always showed the early influences of Lester Young and it was not without flavours of Charlie Parker. On ballads his tone, melody and flowing lines were often executed with the sensuality of Ben Webster. ‘Anniversary’ was recorded live in Copenhagen in 1987 – four years before he died. One of his finest partnerships came at this time and here the ‘mature’ Getz is joined by Kenny Barron, piano – Rufus Reid, bass and Victor Lewis, drums. Not only were these three of the most popular accompanists around they were chosen by Getz because he admired their work, they could work off each other and he fell easily into their ideas and new directions.

With its jarring rhythms and unusual instrumentation – marimba, accordion, various percussion – as well as its frequently surreal lyrics, Rain Dogs is very much a follow-up to Swordfishtrombones, which is to say that it sounds for the most part like The Threepenny Opera being sung by Howlin' Wolf…

The group's second album, with Anderson (vocals, flute, acoustic guitars, keyboards, balalaika), Martin Barre (electric guitar, flute), Clive Bunker (drums), and Glen Cornick (bass), solidified the group's sound. There is still an element of blues, but except for "A New Day Yesterday," it is far more muted than on their first album, as Mick Abrahams' blues stylings are largely absent from Martin Barre's playing…

Caroline International have announced the reissue of Iggy Pop’s long-lost classic Zombie Birdhouse, which is due to be issued on 28 June 2019. A heady concoction of drones, Afrobeats and freeform lyrics, the album was Iggy’s 6th solo studio album and represents him at his freewheeling best. It will be released officially on vinyl and CD for the first time since the original Chris Stein produced release on Animal Records in 1982.

While “Cowboy Outfit” has a slightly different meaning as UK Slang, Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit marks a turn towards a more rootsy persona for our hero. Anchored by the international number one “Half a Boy and Half a Man”, the album introduces a tex-mex/roller-rink organ sound, although the lineup of Bobby Irwin, Paul Carrack, Martin Belmont and Lowe is essentially unchanged. Newly discovered Johnny Horton covers “Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor” and “Walk on By” (included here as bonus tracks) show that there may have been a more twangy intention to the record– but as it is full on rockers like “Maureen” and Mickey Jupp’s “You’ll Never Get Me Up (in One of Those)” rub shoulders with pop like Dusty Springfield’s “Breakaway” and Nick’s own “L.A.F.S.” (featuring the TKO Horns who had recently punched up arranger Elvis Costello’s own “Everyday I Write the Book”).

One of the first American groups to discover that synthesizers and pop are made for each other. The complete studio recordings of a legendary project from the West Coast – for the first time on CD. Moebius (not to be confused with Dieter Moebius!) was a Californian project led by Bryce Robbley and Doug Lynner (for some time the line-up including Steve Roach), whose fascination with synthesizers was combined with catchy, trance-like tunes which were able to take over the disco dance floors. Disco, synth-pop and pulsating sequencers! The group’s début album from 1979 is recognised today as a cult recording – partly because of the wild, punk-electronic version of The Doors’ “Light My Fire”, but above all thanks to the frontmen’s original compositions.

This is a collaboration between Rypdal (on electric guitar & synth), and David Darling (cello). If you think electric guitar & cello is an odd combination for a band, you're right! If you think it couldn't possibly work, you're wrong!! Moody and compelling, and definitely not for everyone.Worth it just for the track "Mirage", which lives up to its title sonically. The track "Laser" does the same also… a blistering solo electric guitar kills any semblance of peace and silence, and after it's over, sets up the hot-summer-day-let-me-lay-and-listen mood for the rest of the CD. All are well worth the listening effort.

At the start of the 1980s, it dawned on somebody in charge of Jimi Hendrix's musical legacy that a whole generation of new listeners had come of age since the guitarist's demise. That meant it was time for a fresh raid on the vaults and a fresh, authorized album release to fly the flag of the Hendrix estate, amid the steady stream of bootleg, gray market, and other unauthorized collections of his early work starting to fill up record store bins and browsers…

Recorded in Ghana in 1981, Mick Fleetwood's solo debut reveals more diversity and depth of feeling than any of Fleetwood Mac's multi-platinum monsters. Six of the tracks are not overt attempts at worldbeat, instead using a variety of West African musicians as sidemen, sidewomen, and, in the case of drum ensemble Ebaali Gbiko, sidechildren. Of these six tracks, several stand out. "Walk a Thin Line," written by Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, is an infectious pop song blending Adjo Group's enchanting backing vocals with guest George Harrison's lush 12-string and slide guitars. Another Fleetwood Mac veteran, Peter Greenbaum (aka Peter Green), accompanies a multinational percussion section for a remake of his "Rattlesnake Shake," originally found on Then Play On. Even the Buddy Holly classic "Not Fade Away" gets supercharged with a percussion ensemble made up of Fleetwood on drums and Lord Tiki and Adjo Group on hand drums and percussion. The West African tracks that make up the remainder of the album are pure pleasure.
