June Tabor is not just one of England's foremost folk singers, but one of the greatest interpretive singers in any field. This set contains key tracks from all parts of her career, many live and unreleased songs and collaborations with, among others, Maddy Prior, The Oyser Band and Martin Simpson. It is subtly lavish, 4 CDs in a long box format (6'' x 12'') with a 48 page full color booklet including historical photographs, a biographical essay and comprehensive notes on the songs. There are 67 tracks, 32 of which are previously unreleased - almost 5 hours of music. The whole package is much more than just a career retrospective, it is a fitting tribute to one of the great singers of our time.

After their internationally successful 1988 self-titled debut, few have followed the the Gypsy Kings' noteworthy fusion of their distinctive flamenco-inflected pop with other international influences. Love & Liberte, a 1994 Elektra Records release, is one of their few compilations of all-new material, one that demonstrates this growth perhaps more than any of their other projects. One of their more extravagant songs, "No Vivire" implements a prominent bassline and strong brass accents in the chorus. Equally pleasant but slightly less authentic, "Escucha Me" crosses their Spanish guitar sound with a full reggae ensemble. The album's zenith hits with two instrumental tracks, "Guitarra Negra" and "Love and Liberte." "Guitarra Negra" shows off castanets with bongos. Every few bars, the intensity seems to reach a peak, only to retreat and regroup for another charge. The title track evolves slowly, with a gradual guitar and bass crescendo highlighted by a series of sparse piano chords on selected downbeats for emphasis. Though not as energetic as their best work, Love and Liberte is still an easy album for a Gypsy Kings fan to appreciate.

For all the agony as to the status of classical music in the modern musical landscape, the three 20th century string quartets on this fine French release can be said to have entered the repertory, with a reach that extends far beyond the U.S. They go quite well together, which is the first point in favor of France's Quatuor Diotima here; both Steve Reich's Different Trains, for string quartet and tape, and George Crumb's Black Angels for electric quartet feature an artificially enhanced string quartet, and even Samuel Barber elected to "enhance" his String Quartet in B minor, Op. 11, by orchestrating its central movement and making it into the famous Adagio for strings. Highly recommended.

Perhaps now overshadowed by his earlier ballet Checkmate, Miracle in the Gorbals was a tremendous hit for Bliss and the Sadler’s Wells Ballet company. First performed in 1944, it was repeated in every season through to 1950. Based on a scenario by Michael Benthall (inspired by Jerome K. Jerome and Dostoyevsky), the ballet features the appearance of a Christ-like figure amid Glasgow’s most infamous slum. This mysterious Stranger performs a miracle, reviving the Girl Suicide, who in despair had earlier thrown herself into the Clyde. The locals rejoice, but an Official (Benthall had in mind a priest) is jealous and, after a failed attempt to cast doubt on the virtue of the Stranger via the local Prostitute, has him slashed to death by a razor gang. Bliss’s score employs a wide range of styles and harmonic language, and also exploits Leitmotifs for the principal characters.

The second album from the Choir of St John’s with their new music director - Christopher Gray. At the centre of the programme are the atmospheric Quatre Motets pour le temps de Noël by Francis Poulenc, and the heartfelt Three Carol-Anthems by Herbert Howells who directed the Choir here at St John’s during the Second World War. Other items include the beautiful carol John Rutter wrote for the Choir in 1985, There is a flower, and the haunting Peace on earth by Master of the King’s Music, Errollyn Wallen. “My aim with this album has not been to break new ground with repertoire, but to ensure that classics remain fresh for the current generation”

CLASSIC 1985 BROADCAST RECORDING FROM THE FIRST SOLO ROGER WATERS TOUR By 1984, the classic Pink Floyd line-up was all but finished. Despite reaching No. 1 on the charts, the previous year s The Final Cut had been met with mixed reviews, and many fans saw it as a Roger Waters solo album in all but name. Having unofficially left the group, Waters took the opportunity to resurrect a previous project,

Guitarist Pat Metheny had long expressed admiration for Ornette Coleman's music, had recorded his compositions, and had worked extensively with bassist Charlie Haden, so a collaboration was not totally unexpected, though who would have guessed that it would be on the Geffen label? Metheny's almost rock star status has worked against him in other partnerships from time to time (notably, his overbearing playing on his project with Derek Bailey, The Sign of 4), but here he happily sublimates his showier instincts and works as sympathetic co-leader, deferring to Coleman's experience and genius.

The mid-to-late Sixties was a strange and difficult time for many Blues men - most were without contracts, forgotten and under-appreciated. Then the Blues boom happened (particularly in the UK) and many had their careers kick-started all over again. Freddie King was no exception. His last album had been for Federal in 1964, but with a new lease of life on the mighty Atlantic label, he produced two much revered LPs in rapid succession. The first was "Freddie King Is A Blues Master" released in 1969 on SD 9004 - and then this peach - "My Feeling For The Blues" on Cotillion SD 9016 released in early 1970.

Royal Rhymes and Rounds is the King's Singers' contribution to the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne in 2012. There are ballads, part songs, madrigals, rounds, and anthems written during the reigns of (and some also in honor of) Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Victoria, and Elizabeth II. The music from the times of Henry and Elizabeth I is especially strong since it was the era of a flowering of English song, which then lay relatively dormant for several centuries. The composers include such luminaries as William Cornysh, Orlando Gibbons, John Dowland, and Thomas Weelkes, as well as Henry himself, whose rousing ballad Pastime with good companie opens the album. It's in this transparent repertoire that the group sounds its absolute best. The singers' immaculate intonation, focused tone quality, and sensitive musicianship are remarkable.

Rhythm has always been more than just for timekeeping. It is inherent to us, instinctive and ritualistic. It is the first communal act, shared before language. Rhythm has been the very core of what it means to be human, the backbone of a millennia of singing, dancing, human expression and interconnectedness. It is with this primal understanding that Munich-based percussionist Simon Popp approaches Trio, his new album and the first made in collaboration with two fellow percussionists, Sebastian Wolfgruber and Flurin Mück.

There’s no sign of any let up in Neil Young’s current reissue/release productivity, with the announcement of three new albums in his ‘Official Bootleg Series’. These are Royce Hall, 1971, a solo acoustic gig which was recorded on 30 January of that year on the UCLA (University of California) campus; Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 1971, another solo acoustic performance and the last US show of his 1971 solo tour; and, perhaps most excitingly, Citizen Kane Jr. Blues (Live at The Bottom Line), an On The Beach-heavy set from New York City, 1974.

The magnificent series of recordings Dinu Lipatti made for Columbia in 1947-8 needs no introduction. They contain some of the most highly regarded performances ever committed to album and have remained in the catalogue almost continuously since their first issue on 78s. What makes the current set unique is the inclusion of five test albums made with the cellist Antonio Janigro, only two of which have appeared previously, and new masterings which reveal more of the original recordings than before. For the 1947 London recordings (originally released in 1999) APR had access to vinyl pressings from the original 78rpm masters and these have been further enhanced. For the newly transferred 1948 sessions, the original 78s were used rather that the subsequent LP issue (itself derived from the 78rpm masters) which appears to have been used in all other transfers. These turned out to have a much brighter sound and more ambience than the rather dull and filtered LP. We strongly believe the Schumann Concerto has never sounded so good!
