Miles Davis Septet, live from Shinjuku Kohseinenkin Hall, Tokyo Japan 19th June 1973 The early-to-mid 1970s marked perhaps the most unique and radical period in Miles Davis career. With bands such as Sly & The Family Stone and Parliament/Funkadelic becoming increasingly popular, Davis began to draw considerable influence from their up-tempo, electronic funk sound. By 1973, Miles was showing little sign of slowing the pace of his extraordinary workload that had continued unabated from In A Silent Way up to On The Corner and he continued to tour relentlessly worldwide. June 19th 1973 saw him take to the stage in Tokyo, Japan, playing a selection of previously recorded numbers and extended jams, in a show broadcast live across the region by NHK radio. Hi-Hat proudly presents the complete and definitive broadcast of Miles Davis; live from Shinjuku Kohseinenkin Hall, Tokyo Japan 19th June 1973.

Lunar Phase, the new LP from iconic alt-pop group Deep Blue Something, is at once a love letter to the genre-agnostic musical landscape of the early 90s and very much of the moment. Perhaps best known for their hit single "Breakfast at Tiffany's" which reached the top 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and became a global hit in 1995, culminating with a U.K. #1 in 1996, the band's music encompasses a range of styles, from dream-pop to alternative rock, pop, and post-grunge. Formed in Denton, Texas in 1993, Deep Blue Something is composed of Todd Pipes (vocals and bass), his brother Toby Pipes (vocals and lead guitar), Kirk Tatom (guitar and backing vocals), Clay Bergus (guitar and backing vocals), and John Kirtland (drums). The band's debut album, 11th Song, was released in 1993 followed by Home in 1995, Byzantium in 1998 and Deep Blue Something in 2000. Each album showcases the band's songwriting and musicianship, earning them a devoted fanbase and critical acclaim.

In 2005 Mad Dogs & Englishmen was reissued in a two-CD deluxe edition with eight previously unreleased live performances inserted throughout the discs and four rare studio recordings tacked onto the end. The new live performances are longer and looser and Russell plays an even bigger role. They're excellent, as are the stereo studio mixes of "The Letter" and "Space Captain," available for the first time here.
Mad Dogs & Englishmen was just about the most elaborate album that A&M Records had ever released, back in 1971, a double LP in a three-panel, fold-out, gatefold sleeve, with almost 80 minutes of music inside and a ton of photos, graphics, and annotation wrapping around it…

When most people think about Nigerian music, the first thing that comes to mind is Lagos, the country's main commercial center, the glittering megacity that spawned Yoruba-speaking music luminaries such as Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Sir Shina Peters and Wizkid. But Nigeria is a country of rich diversity, especially in its music: From the Igbo highlife and rock bands of east-central region, to the deep Edo roots rhythms from the midwest, to the keening, ornamented Fulani melodies of the north. But one region whose music has remained largely under-explored is the south eastern land of the Efik and Ibibio ethnic groups in Cross River and Akwa Ibom State, the region colloquially referred to as "Calabar." A cradle of culture, this region was one of the earliest outposts of Nigerian popular music. Its primordial rhythms traveled across the Atlantic during the slave trade to provide the part of the foundation for Afro-Cuban grooves that would go on to influence the development of jazz, rock & roll, R&B and funk.

Black Truffle is thrilled to present the first ever solo Donso n’goni recording from octogenarian Swedish multi-instrumentalist Christer Bothén. Active in the Swedish jazz and improvisation scene since the 1970s, often heard on bass clarinet, Bothén travelled to Mali in 1971, eventually making his way to the Wassoulou region in the country’s south where he encountered the Donso n’goni, the sacred harp of the hunter caste of Wassoulou society. Though playing the instrument has traditionally been restricted to those who belong to the hunters’ brotherhood, Bothén found an enthusiastic teacher in Brouema Dobia, who, after many months of intensive one-on-one lessons, gave Bothén his blessing to play the instrument both traditionally and in his own style. Returning to Sweden, he would go on to pass on what he had learned to Don Cherry and play the Donso n’goni in a wide variety of inventive settings, including the driving Afro-jazz-fusion of his Trancedance (reissued as BT118).

Pink Floyd Some bands turn into shorthand for a certain sound or style, and Pink Floyd belongs among that elite group. The very name connotes something specific: an elastic, echoing, mind-bending sound that evokes the chasms of space. Pink Floyd grounded that limitless sound with exacting explorations of mundane matters of ego, mind, memory, and heart, touching upon madness, alienation, narcissism, and society on their concept albums of the '70s. Of these concept albums, Dark Side of the Moon resonated strongest, earning new audiences year after year, decade after decade, and its longevity makes sense. That 1973 concept album distilled the wild psychedelia of their early years – that brief, heady period when they were fronted by Syd Barrett – into a slow, sculpted, widescreen epic masterminded by Roger Waters, the bassist who was the band's de facto leader in the '70s.

Eric Bibb's version of the blues is calm, wise, hushed, and elegant, as much or more about redemption as it is about despair, and above all, Bibb sees the blues as narrative, part of the story we all drift through. His best songs, often built on traditional patterns and rhythms, are wise and affirming, and they fall to the brighter and more hopeful side of the blues. There are several such gems on Deeper in the Well, including the opening track, a delightful piece of Louisiana shuffle funk called "Bayou Belle," the string band gospel bounce of "Dig a Little Deeper in the Well," a modal and relentlessly driving "Boll Weevil," "Sittin' in a Hotel Room," which is a wise and hopeful story of contentment, and the final track, a stunningly beautiful banjo version of Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are a-Changin'." It all adds up to a beautifully redemptive album, one of Bibb's best.
