Dinah Washington was one of the most popular and successful female singers of the post-war decades, her immaculate vocal style and phrasing enabling her to encompass blues, R&B, jazz, big band and sophisticated pop with ease, and had her life not been cut short in 1963 at the age of 39, she would undoubtedly have had a lengthy career as an album artist. As it was, she was consistently successful with her single releases, racking up 60 hits across the US pop and R&B charts. This 108-track 4-CD collection comprises selected A & B sides of her releases on the Keynote, Decca, Apollo and Mercury labels from this era, with at least one side of most of her records included. It features 58 of her hits, including the R&B No. 1s "Am I Asking Too Much", "Baby Get Lost" and "This Bitter Earth", and numerous Top 5 hits including "What A Difference A Day Makes", "It's Too Soon To Know", "September In The Rain", "Teach Me Tonight" and the Top 5 duet hits with Brook Benton "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)" and "A Rockin' Good Way". It features performances with some of the top orchestras of the day, including the sextets of Lionel Hampton and Leonard Feather, and with Lucky Thompson's All Stars, plus the orchestras of Quincy Jones, Hal Mooney, Belford Hendricks, Ike Carpenter and more. It's a substantial and varied showcase for one of the great singers of the era.

Maria João Pires “shapes and colours every phrase, and with immaculate taste, and she makes sure the phrases end as eloquently as they begin,” wrote Gramophone in 1974. “She conveys not just the details but the relevance of every note to the whole … Best of all, she communicates everything she has discovered about the music, and it is worth having.” This Portuguese pupil of Wilhelm Kempff, Pires was one of the artists who defined the Erato label in the 1970s and 1980s. This 5-CD box gathers together the recordings she made over the period from 1976 to 1985 and it reflects the consistent focus of her repertoire, with its special emphasis on Austro-German composers of the Classical and early-Romantic periods. Embracing solo works, piano duets and concertos, it contains works by Mozart, Schumann, Beethoven, but also by Bach and Chopin.

This is Allen's first solo album which he recorded years after leaving the legendary Soft Machine and soon after forming the anarchic, experimental and drug-inspired ensemble Gong. The album's highlights include the moody 'Memories' with Robert Wyatt on vocals, one of the finest tracks to come out of the so-called 'Canterbury Sound', and the rocking opener 'Time Of Your Life' is a showcase for Allen's guitar pyrotechnics.

Special 15 track collection from the lead singer and co-founder of Roxy Music's solo career. The tracks are drawn primarily from his solo albums along with a few Roxy chestnuts thrown in for good measure. Includes alt versions of "Let's Stick Together" and "The Price Of Love" as well as the only CD appearance of the song "Help Me" that was used in the motion picture "The Fly".

Flash was the DJ and the Furious Five were the best multiple rappers around, moving from the music's low-rent dance origins (it was Flash who began cutting in repeated portions of other records) and party spirit to the "message" approach that took over in the mid 80s, prefigured in "The Message." Much of what came later, started here.

The vibe here is very much up to the "waltz a nova" in the title – that modal mode that first came on strongly in the 60s, then was picked up even more by the post-Coltrane generation – who used its progressive rhythms to really stretch out to the skies in some very righteous ways! Most of the tunes here have a great little groove, even when gentle – and the package is put together beautifully, so that the music really builds as things roll on – picking up even more power than before, and really leaving us wanting more by the end. The whole thing was done by Toru Hashimoto – easily one of the best compilers of our generation – and the package runs for nearly 80 minutes in length.

The Now What’s That I Call Music Team continue their ‘Yearbook’ series with NOW Yearbook ’84 an 80-track four-CD set and 3LP coloured vinyl package that features 42 defining hits that ruled the charts in 1984, including number ones from Lionel Richie, Chaka Khan, Duran Duran, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and George Michael (solo and with Wham!), together with huge hits from U2, Spandau Ballet, and Deniece Williams. As with NOW Yearbook ’83 the four-CD set is available in deluxe hardcover book set with a 28-page book with track annotations and music quiz laid out in classic ‘eighties’ style. This is limited to 5,000 units. A slightly cheaper non-deluxe is also available (but you really don’t want to be buying that one). NOW Yearbook ’84 is out on 29 October 2021. Edgar Moreau performs two cello concertos which bravely and wittily challenge convention. Offenbach’s ambitious Grand Concerto in G major culminates in military fireworks, while Friedrich Gulda’s Concerto for Cello, Wind Orchestra and Band – written 130 years later – is a dazzling stylistic kaleidoscope. Moreau is joined by conductor Raphaël Merlin and the dynamic orchestral collective Les Forces Majeures.

With an album of celebration – both joyful and solemn – trumpeter Alison Balsom again declares her love for the baroque era, which she calls “the golden age of the trumpet”. Joining Handel’s exuberant Music for the Royal Fireworks are works by two other German-born composers – JS Bach and Telemann – and by the London-born Henry Purcell. “These baroque composers knew the instrument they were writing for,” says Balsom. “There is such value in searching out the sound that they would have heard themselves, with the intention of authenticity. When it comes together it is utterly thrilling.”
