Frank Zappa's liner notes for Freak Out! name-checked an enormous breadth of musical and intellectual influences, and he seemingly attempts to cover them all on the second Mothers of Invention album, Absolutely Free. Leaping from style to style without warning, the album has a freewheeling, almost schizophrenic quality, encompassing everything from complex mutations of "Louie, Louie" to jazz improvisations and quotes from Stravinsky's Petrushka. It's made possible not only by expanded instrumentation, but also Zappa's experiments with tape manipulation and abrupt editing, culminating in an orchestrated mini-rock opera ("Brown Shoes Don't Make It") whose musical style shifts every few lines, often in accordance with the lyrical content…

After a prolific run in the 1970s, Manuel Göttsching's '80s output with Ash Ra Tempel was greatly reduced and the quality of his work was uneven: Belle Alliance flirted with contemporary synth pop with mixed results; E2-E4 proved influential, resonating with subsequent electronic artists; and the cheesy new age travelogue Tropical Heat dabbled in some of the decade's worst sonic clichés. Recorded in 1988, Walkin' the Desert struck a tasteful balance between Göttsching's experimental inclinations and a more mainstream techno sensibility. The album is an edited version of a performance given with Lutz Ulbrich in Berlin for the Desert Sounds event series (part of the Berlin: European Capital of Culture festival)…

London's Skunk Anansie plays what their lead singer Skin calls clit-rock – an amalgam of heavy metal, alternative rock, punk, and Black feminist rage. Known for their socio-politically charged lyrics and brash, hard rock sound which made them outliers in the '90s Brit-pop scene, the band released the platinum-selling studio albums Paranoid & Sunburnt, Stoosh, and Post Orgasmic Chill, before disbanding in 2001. Skunk Anansie re-formed in 2009 and released the hard-hitting Wonderlustre in 2010, followed by a series of acclaimed albums, including Anarchytecture (2016) and The Painful Truth (2025), that honed their genre-bending sound and combative punk aesthetic to a fine point.

With a sound that effortlessly bridges timeless tradition and contemporary sophistication, Gillece once again proves his command of the vibraphone and his deep-rooted fluency in the jazz language. Pivot Point is swinging, melodic, and deeply expressive — a must-hear for fans of forward-thinking jazz that never loses sight of its bluesy roots.

Glenn Miller's reign as the most popular bandleader in the U.S. came relatively late in his career and was relatively brief, lasting only about three and a half years, from the spring of 1939 to the fall of 1942. But during that period he utterly dominated popular music, and over time he has proven the most enduring figure of the swing era, with reissues of his recordings achieving gold record status 40 years after his death. Miller developed a distinctive sound in which a high-pitched clarinet carried the melody, doubled by a saxophone section playing an octave lower, and he used that sound to produce a series of hits that remain definitive examples of swing music. Miller's approach is not much appreciated by jazz fans, who prefer bands that allow for greater improvisation than was found in his highly disciplined, rigorously rehearsed unit.

If the world is a cafe, its ridiculous patrons babbling ridiculously all day long, then Ron Mael is the guy on his own in the corner that you don't notice, quietly sipping his coffee. But he's watching, listening, making notes. Those notes become songs for his band, the legendary Sparks, to be sung by his brother Russell in his unmistakeable falsetto.

This album, which Denis Kozhukhin dedicates in memory of his parents, is very special and deeply personal to him. It brings together the innocence of Tchaikovsky’s Children’s Album, the playful yet technically demanding Music for Children by Prokofiev, and Alexey Shor’s emotionally rich Piano Sonata No. 2. Tchaikovsky’s pieces evoke childhood wonder and the fragility of life, while Prokofiev’s “easy” works cleverly disguise technical challenges with mischievous charm. Shor’s Sonata, filled with bold contrasts and introspective melodies, takes the listener on a journey of emotional discovery and resilience. Together, these works transcend their individual stories to offer a profound exploration of human experience – from the simplicity of childhood to the complexities of adulthood – all brought to life with Kozhukhin’s masterful artistry.

There are only so many ways you can say it, but it's worth repeating: the combination of Valery Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra is one of the all-time best when it comes to performing Russian music for the stage. The recording of the complete Nutcracker is just one example of their particular skills. There is a clarity and precision to the orchestra's playing that gives Tchaikovsky's music sparkle, while Gergiev breathes life into the dances and few moments of drama that are in the story. Even if you are only half-paying attention to it, you can still make out every distinct line, as melodies and countermelodies seamlessly pass from one instrument to another, and every nuance of dynamics and timing.
