Warren Defever’s beloved, long-standing ethereal darkwave project His Name Is Alive has a long history with 4AD, and in celebration of the band’s early works, 4AD are proud to be releasing the strictly limited, Deluxe 6xLP, 63-track Boxset entitled How Ghosts Affect Relationships: 1990-1993, available September 27 exclusively on the 4AD webstore and Bandcamp. This essential collectible compiles the first three His Name Is Alive albums (Livonia, Home Is In Your Head, and Mouth By Mouth), sourced from the original analogue tapes and painstakingly remastered by Defever himself (at Third Man Mastering), with three additional LPs of rich, bonus material and unreleased tracks (including The Dirt Eaters EP). The collection is also accompanied by an extensive 36-page book authored by 4AD biographer Martin Aston, detailing the fascinating story of His Name Is Alive’s early period with previously unseen imagery and ephemera, as well as written contributions from Ivo Watts-Russell, Johnny Jewel, and more.

The album features Waters on acoustic guitar, backed by Willie Dixon on string bass, Clifton James on drums, and Buddy Guy on acoustic guitar. It is Waters's only all-acoustic album. Numerous reissues of Folk Singer include bonus tracks from two subsequent sessions, in April 1964 and October 1964. Despite not charting in any country, Folk Singer received critical acclaim; most reviewers praised its high-quality sound, especially on remastered versions, as well as the instrumentation. In 2003, the album was ranked number 280 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Naxos’ exciting and important American Classics series now includes music of the present day, in this case three recent works by Philip Glass. The Violin Concerto, a work that (surprisingly) adheres to classical conventions, lures us in with beautiful, seductive harmonies. Glass relies both on his trademark arpeggiated technique (sounding in the first movement somewhat like Vivaldi’s “Winter” concerto) and on his favorite harmonic progressions to suggest a sustained melodic line. In the first two movements Glass’ carefully timed harmonic and rhythmic shifts keep you in a happy daze. He breaks the mood in the finale, however, leaving the soloist to practice arpeggios at length until the quiet, serene coda steals in. Adele Anthony, who plays with the kind of skill and grace we would expect in a Mozart concerto, brings off Glass’ work with consummate, convincing musicianship. Company (music for Becket’s prose) for string orchestra is in four movements, characterized by stimulating changes in time signature and rhythm.

For the first time - Dinah Lee has been mastered for CD release! Previous Dinah Lee compilations (three in the 90s) have all sounded thin. This new remastered compilation finally does justice to Dinah's catalogue with its vibrancy and depth, while the corresponding booklet documents Dinah's story in detail. Both this and the single disc 'The Collection' cover Dinah's full career, starting with 'Don't You Know Yockomo' from 1964 through to 2016's 'Cathedral Square'.

The cover may clue you in that you're not getting a conventional recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons here, but just in case that doesn't do the job, this is, in the words of violinist Roby Lakatos (who writes his own utterly distinctive notes), "Vivaldi alla Gypsy." This involves not only a cimbalom but, in some sections, wholesale rewriting of Vivaldi's score (the central movement of "Winter" brings the biggest departure). Lakatos says that he made the album because his label wanted him to record a classical repertory work, but the links between the gypsy tradition and the classics is centuries old, and Lakatos comes from a musical family that taught Franz Liszt back in the day. Lakatos is undoubtedly an exciting and dynamic player. One might object that the logic in when he sticks to the score and when he takes it merely as a stimulus to new music-making is not entirely clear.

After "Carmina Burana" - Carl Orff's most famous piece - the composer went on to write two large compositions for soloists, chorus and instruments which completed the trio of "Trionfi." The current recording presents very fine performances of these two compositions, the "Catulli Carmina" (1943) and "Triumph of Aphrodite" (1951). The last of these is a genuine discovery, a very interesting and attractive take on Greek culture.

Throughout its Golden Age, England cultivated the masque, an elite entertainment featuring dialogue, song, and dance. As part of these spectacles, courtiers—and at times even the queen herself—often graced the dance floor. But it was hired professionals who provided the musical heart of these productions. Lutenists in particular were especially adept at creating music for any occasion. The dances, variations on popular songs, and fantasias they composed are full of versatility and virtuosity. This recording features lute works by the foremost composers of the Elizabethan-Jacobean era, with music by Dowland, Holborne, Bacheler, Ferrabosco, and other contemporaries who participated in The Queenes Maskes.
