Being labeled and marketed as a blues musician was never really a good fit for Keb' Mo'. True, he first came to the attention of most when he came out of Compton playing Robert Johnson songs on a National Steel guitar, and that’s how his recording career started, but this is a guy who used to be a staff songwriter for A&M Records, so he has always had plenty of pop, soul, R&B, and jazz in his kit bag and, truth be known, he’s really closer to an artist like James Taylor than he is to Howlin’ Wolf. His album The Reflection, the first on his own Yolabelle record imprint (he also self-produced the album) after several releases with Sony, has nothing on it that could be called blues, and nothing that even really comes close. It’s a calm, easy, and mellow mixture of adult pop…

The Codex Faenza 117 features the richest instrumental variations of medieval plainchant masses and offices that have come down to us, including three pairs of Kyrie-Gloria settings, a ceremonial motet and several sections of a Marian office. Mala Punica’s ground-breaking recording of this repertoire has shown different possible combinations between voices and—mostly keyboard—instruments to be suitable for the repertoire. The composer Johann Theile is of great significance in music history inasmuch as he is held to be one of the last pupils of Heinrich Schütz, who was the most important German-language composer of the seventeenth century.

The Brecker Brothers - Michael and Randy - were one of the most successful of the jazz/fusion groups that arose in the 1970s, recording 6 best-selling albums for Arista between 1975 and 1981. Musicians on the records make a jazz/fusion hall of fame including David Sanborn, Steve Gadd, Will Lee, Harvey Mason, Marcus Miller, George Duke, and many more. In 1979 they also participated in all-star shows at the Montreux Jazz Festival. The band was Steve Khan, Tony Levin, Mike Mainieri and Steve Jordan. These two albums are included here as bonuses. This boxset is presented in a clamshell box with a booklet that, in addition to a detailed track and personnel listings, has aintroduction by Randy, and each album is housed in a mini-LP replication of the original vinyl releases.

Most of the contents of Super Lungs: The Complete Studio Recordings – most especially the albums Bang, Bang You're Terry Reid and Terry Reid – will be familiar to the singer's fans, and may dissuade people from picking up this double-CD set. That would be a shame, however, in view of the other material that is here – starting with his work with Peter Jay & the Jaywalkers, which opens disc one and dates from well before his solo debut, Reid reveals himself as an extraordinarily (jaw-droppingly good, in fact) soul singer, with range, power, charisma, and taste, even on those early sides, and the package is extended into genuinely uncharted territory with a half-dozen newly discovered, newly mixed outtakes from Bang, Bang You're Terry Reid, and two tracks from Reid's first recording session in 1966, "Funny How Time Slips Away" (which is almost worth the price of the double-CD set by itself) and "I'll Take Good Care of You." The sound quality is spot-on perfect, state of the art, the annotation by Peter Doggett is entertaining and informative, and the whole package is some of the best British-spawned soul and R&B that one can find.

The first eight centuries of the common era were a tumultuous one for Christian theology, played out in the writings of scholars now considered Early Church fathers. The study of this back-and-forth, which eventually resulted in an agreed ‘canon,’ gives Patristic their name. On debut Catechesis, the trio turn to the turbulent and culturally pivotal period that saw the fall of the Roman Empire, and the rise of the once-marginalized religion. The album’s title refers to the practice of Christian instruction imparted upon potential converts - teachings which stemmed from a still-divided root, even as the religion spread and any pretenses to truth conceded to power. This chaos informs Patristic’s music in a way unique to freeform dissonant metal and culminates in a record whose resonance goes beyond the literal echo of its notes.

Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth and Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree have collaborated before, but Storm Corrosion is the product of their combined creativity. The music of the debut is ambient avant-folk with elements of jazz and symphonic music, and therefore rather different than the styles the duo have explored with their respective bands. Wilson concentrated on keyboards and arrangements, leaving Åkerfeldt to handle most of the guitar work. What sparse drumming appears on the album is there courtesy of Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, O.S.I., The Tangent).

BROADCAST RECORDING FROM THE MID-1980s WHILE ON THE DISCOVERY TOUR Released in June 1984, Mike Oldfield s ninth studio album Discovery was to become one of his most celebrated. The record reached No. 1 on charts across Europe, but only gained a No. 15 placing on the British album chart. In the second half of 1984 Oldfield and his band embarked on a Europe wide tour in promotion of the album. On 8th September they performed at Teatro Tenda Bussoladomani, in Viareggio, Italy, where they played a stunning show which was recoded for FM broadcast across Italy as well as being synched live in the US, where, at that time, most folk were not generally too aware of Mike Oldfield s history. Previously unreleased this recording is now out in its entirety on this new 2CD set, allowing fans to hear one of Mike Oldfield s finest shows of the 1980s in fine audio quality.
