Volume 57 in Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto series turns up another ‘discovery’: the music of Swedish composer Adolf Wiklund. These little-known but lusciously tuneful works are characterized by big-boned, symphonic gestures reminiscent of Rachmaninov, yet tempered with the Nordic clarity of Grieg. Wiklund’s two piano concertos are central to his output, and in fact they enjoyed considerable popularity in Sweden until as recently as fifty years ago, when modernist sensibilities deemed them unfashionable.

Haydn's importance in the development of both the symphony and the string quartet is well known and his works in those genres have become staples of the repertoire. However, the great composer's piano concerti are not performed nearly as often as those of Mozart or Beethoven. After listening to these glorious performances by fortepianist Andreas Staier, originally released in 2005, you will wonder why.

Trio con Brio Copenhagen returns to Orchid Classics with a triptych of Russian piano trios: two works by Shostakovich framing music by Arensky. These Russian composers lived through turning points in their country’s history. Arensky died in 1906, the year in which Shostakovich was born, and their output charts the trajectory of Russian and Soviet political and artistic history during those years. Arensky’s ardent Piano Trio No.1 was written in 1894, when Russian Romanticism was at its peak. Inspired by young love, the 17-year-old Shostakovich wrote his Piano Trio No.1 Poème in 1923 in Petrograd (St. Petersburg), finding expression for strong personal emotions via a musical language influenced by film scores.

Swedish progressive rock legends The Flower Kings, and longtime label-partners InsideOutMusic, will begin an extensive reissue campaign in 2022, which will see the entire catalogue of the band reissued on CD & Vinyl in remastered editions, with it being the first time many of the albums have been available on wax. The next in the series is the band’s sixth album ‘The Rainmaker’. It will be available as Ltd. CD Digipak & Gatefold black 2LP+CD & LP-Booklet (for the first time!), both featuring remastered and partly remixed audio and new artwork.

McOil got together in 1976 in Ochsenhausen in Oberschwaben. Their musi­cal direction: progressive rock of the harder kind. "All our hopes" was released in 1979 as a limited private presing of 1000 copies. As a bonus track this CD, which is taken from the mastertape, features the B-side of the single, but in a slightly different version, and also a two minute drum solo on "This time should never end" which is not on the LP.

Contemporary jazz pianist and composer David Benoit has chosen to forgo many of the tropes and methods of working he's employed for the past 30 years on Heroes. Simply put, this is a tribute record to a select group of musicians who have inspired him and shown him a way forward. Before getting to the music, it's worth noting that in his brief liner essay, Benoit spells out that this is by no means a complete list, and points to those he left off for justifiable reasons, which is a nice touch. The music he has chosen stays well within the parameters of contemporary jazz, but lends a deeper focus to Benoit's approach in general.
