Of all the composers whose names are far better known than their music, Czerny must be the most famous. Czerny? Oh yes, he was the chap who wrote those 'velocity exercises', the medicine pianists must take if they are to get better. True, but that wasn't all, his opus numbers leave little change out of 850! So why the neglect? Maybe there are two reasons. First, as a pupil of Beethoven, a teacher of Liszt and a contemporary of Schubert, he was born at the wrong time, surrounded by compositional giants. Second, it was his large output of didactic works and his eminence as a teacher that shaped his image, and his emphasis on technical brilliance was not always helpful to the balance of his music.

The intervening dozen years since I reviewed Hyperion’s initial release of four English Violin Concertos (66865, 20:2) may not have witnessed a surge of interest in these works; nevertheless, the panache that Elizabeth Wallfisch brought to them in her recording sessions in January 1996 has hardly paled with the passage of time. These violinist-composers, contemporaries of Viotti and Mozart, wrote in an Italianate style, with woodwind splashes (all four concertos include oboes and horns, and Linley’s adds flutes as well) that enhance the kind of concertante symphonic sound which Paul Stoeving noted in Viotti’s concertos.

The third collaboration between mezzo-soprano Olivia Vermeulen and Jan Philip Schulze (piano / synthesizer), In Heaven, follows their earlier themed albums Dirty Minds and Hello Darkness, which were highly acclaimed and won an Edison Award and a German Record Critics' Award, among others. While the first two albums dealt with earthly themes such as eroticism and mortality, this program turns to the heavens. The concept is a cosmic odyssey combining art song, contemporary music, pop and psychedelic classics into a journey through utopian visions, distant planets and the eternal human fascination with space. Interspersed with NASA sound recordings, the album transports the listener between heaven and earth, fantasy and reality, intoxication and transcendence.

It would be unkind to point out that Lorrie Morgan looks a little the worse for wear on the cover of Show Me How – if she didn't do a song on that very subject on the album ("Now my idea of letting it all hang out/Sure has changed with time/And that's hard on a bombshell"), and if she didn't have a perfect right. So it's doubly a pleasure to find that Morgan sounds, at an age that usually takes its toll on the tight throats of female country vocalists, better than ever.

On the occasion of Fiori Musicali’s performance of their ‘Vivaldi’s Venice’ at Bilton Grange Chapel, I thought I’d have a chat with one of the main instrumentalists of the evening, Heidi Fardell. Heidi’s instrument is quite familiar for many of us. It’s often the first experience that we have playing music. ‘London’s Burning’ might give you a clue.

Soft Cell could have been nothing more than a one-hit wonder after their hit "Tainted Love," the Gloria Jones cover that would accompany them throughout their career. The duo revealed, however, that they had much more to offer on their 1981 debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, which included the tracks "Bedsitter" and "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye." The three Soft Cell albums released in 1981 and 1984 all reached the Top 20 in the UK. Nevertheless, Marc Almond and David Ball decided to end the band amicably in 1984. The duo reformed in the early 2000s and released the album Cruelty Without Beauty two years later, which, due to lack of success, led to a second split in 2005. But in 2018, Soft Cell once again returned to the fold with a tour, followed by the album Happiness Not Included which saw them return to the UK Top 10 and, more importantly, to a critical success not seen since the 1980s.

Yoko Ono's catalog isn't easy to navigate or even define at times. Even when John Lennon was on board as a collaborator – band member, producer or cheerleader – her music could be willfully difficult and stubbornly uncommercial. She's a singular artist, maybe more so than her late husband and his famous band, which makes any tribute to her vast recorded work an uphill charge not exactly suited for the easily intimidated. The 14 brave souls who tackle Ono's music on Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono can't truly replicate her distinctive path, and much of the source material hinges on her artist's right to explore those paths via routes of her choosing. In other words, they're not songs in the traditional sense. There have been some interpretable tracks over the years: "Who Has Seen the Wind?," "Listen, the Snow Is Falling" and "Walking on Thin Ice" are close enough to pop music.
