The main reason to obtain Think Before You Think is the prominently featured tenor sax of Joe Lovano, who was a year away from recording for Blue Note when the acoustic post-bop/hard bop session was done in 1989. This isn't to take anything away from leader Bill Stewart - a competent, swinging drummer - or his other sidemen on the album: acoustic pianist Mark Cohen (an admirer of Bill Evans and Chick Corea) and the distinguished, risk-taking bassist Dave Holland. But it is Lovano's contributions that stand out the most. Whether being cerebral on Holland's moody "Processional" and the angular "Dewey Said" (Lovano's ode to saxman Dewey Redman) or melancholy and remorseful on the standard "Goodbye," Lovano never fails to play with soul and conviction…

World-renowned acoustic and electric bassist Brian Bromberg hasn’t released an album in the U.S. since 2012, a fact that might not have been cause for concern if you know that at one point he released three albums in one year. Every man deserves a break. However, once you realize that this chameleon with over 20 projects in his catalog recently had reason to believe that he might never play music again, you understand the gravity of his latest acoustic jazz project, Full Circle - one he says may well be “the most important record of my career.” Like all of his work, Bromberg’s latest features a stellar cast that includes trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, saxophonists Bob Sheppard, Kirk Whalum and Doug Webb, pianists Randy Waldman,Mitch Forman and Otmaro Ruiz, and percussionist Alex Acuña. The project also finds ‘the man that refuses to sit still’ mixing styles from New Orleans funk and a legit jazz cover of Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop `Til You Get Enough” to Cubop - with a sizzling relentless swing throughout.

A trio of amazing records from the legendary Francy Boland – sessions done away from his big band work with Kenny Clarke, and in a groove that breaks nicely from that group's more famous style! The sessions here are still very much in Clarke/Boland Big Band territory – as Francy's working with a large group of familiar players, and is produced by CBBB impresario Gigi Campi – but the overall sound is quite different too, and features a range of sensitive and sophisticated tones and colors!

This 1998 OJC CD reissues a very elusive item, the first 10" LP released by Contemporary. The six selections by the Lighthouse All-Stars (actually their fourth recording and third for Contemporary) were recorded live at the Lighthouse. At the time, the band had quite a notable lineup (trumpeter Shorty Rogers, trombonist Milt Bernhart, both Jimmy Giuffre and Bob Cooper on tenors, pianist Russ Freeman, bassist Howard Rumsey, and drummer Shelly Manne). The recording quality is not as good as studio records of the era, but the musicians all play well; Teddy Edwards' "Sunset Eyes" is a highlight. Shortly after, Rogers and Manne would depart to lead their own bands and Giuffre would join Rogers. This CD concludes with three previously unreleased numbers from September 1953…

'Skirting The River Road' is the second ECM recording by Scottish singer/songwriter Robin Williamson. It follows his critically praised solo album 'The Seed-At-Zero', which set texts by Dylan Thomas. The new album finds a thread of continuity that links three visionary poets - Walt Whitman, William Blake, and Henry Vaughan - and places their work in an improvisational context. There are also new songs by Williamson himself and a radical remake of an early classic, "Here To Burn". Williamson is usually considered a "folk" musician - his roots are certainly in the world's folk traditions - but he has also always been an experimentalist. The Incredible String Band (which he co-founded) was an autonomous, homemade 'avant-garde' unit in the 1960s, outside all the idioms but instinctively reaching for new forms, with Williamson's soaring voice leading the way.

The Music for Lovers series from EMI and Blue Note spotlights the balladic nature and romantic side of artists who have recorded for its associated labels. Joe Williams, of course, was a superb ballad singer whose rich voice and patient interpretations usually brought a maximum of feeling to the standards he sang. His Music for Lovers volume includes songs from three sessions for the EMI-owned Roulette - all but one from either 1959 or 1961 - and it features Williams in a comfortable setting with musicians who knew how to swing the Joe Williams way; two of the tops, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison and tenor Ben Webster, join him on the highlights, "I Only Have Eyes for You" and "You Are Too Beautiful"…

Recorded during pianist Bill Evans' last visit to England (less than two months before his death), Evans is heard with one of his finest trios on Letter to Evan, the unit with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joe La Barbera. The recording quality of the live set (recorded at Ronnie Scott's) is excellent, and Evans is in surprisingly enthusiastic and creative form; there is no hint that the end is near. Highlights of the very worthwhile release include "Days of Wine and Roses" (which alternates back and forth between two keys), "Knit for Mary F.," and "Stella by Starlight." Easily recommended for true Bill Evans fans.

Ze Records boasted an early-'80s roster that included the varied likes of Alan Vega, Kid Creole & the Coconuts (who was also the imprint's house producer), Was (Not Was), John Cale, the Waitresses, and Christina. The label's musical focus was often on the poppy and eclectic offshoots of New York punk, with more raw acts like Lydia Lunch, James Chance & the Contortions, and Suicide balancing things out with some typically askew contributions. Even though this second label roundup does not feature those fine proponents of Gotham's underground ethos, it still provides a fairly thorough overview of Ze's best acts.

Originally released in 1973 as a 9-LP set, it presents a comprehensive survey of Friedrich Gulda's accomplishments as a superb composer and performer of works crossing the lines between classical music and jazz. This 5-CD box set features extensive new and original liner notes, song lyrics and rare photos in a 48-page beautiful booklet! It's really a rich "midlife harvest" of work by the Austrian genius of the universal music - a key figure in the intersection between jazz and modern music on the European scene of the postwar years, represented here by a wealth of recordings done for Preiser, Decca and MPS during the 60s and 70s.

This unusual set has five selections from a date featuring the great tenor Coleman Hawkins, pianist Hank Jones, bassist George Duvivier, and drummer Shelly Manne. Both "Take the 'A' Train" and "Cherokee" find the group at times playing two tempos at once (Manne sticks to double-time throughout "Cherokee"), and showing that they'd heard some of the avant-garde players. The most swinging piece, "Avalon," was previously available only on a sampler, while "Me and Some Drums" features Hawkins and Manne in a very effective duet; the veteran tenor makes his only recorded appearance on piano during the first half. This date is rounded off by a pair of trio features for Eddie Costa (with Duvivier and Manne); one song apiece on vibes and drums. A very interesting set with more than its share of surprises.

For quite a few years in the 1950s, it was a tradition at the Lighthouse for music to be presented on Sundays from 2 p.m. until 2 a.m. The Lighthouse All-Stars formed the core of the all-star group, but quite often other notable players would sit in. This CD reissue presents live performances from one such Sunday. In addition to the usual bandmembers of the time (trumpeter Shorty Rogers, trombonist Milt Bernhart, Bob Cooper and Jimmy Giuffre on tenors, pianist Frank Patchen, bassist Howard Rumsey, and drummer Shelly Manne), trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, pianist Hampton Hawes, and Carlos Vidal on conga have opportunities to be heard. The music is straight-ahead, generally cool-toned, but with plenty of heat; "Viva Zapata" is a Latin romp. Virtually everyone is featured. Highlights include "Four Others," and Rogers' playing on "All the Things You Are" and "Bernie's Tune."

Swingrowers are from Palermo in Sicily and aim to take vintage swing, and with respect and nurture, breathe new life into an old tradition. It’s with their Fresh and yet somehow innately Italian musicianship, combined with the sharp, progressive, but completely sympathetic production style of Roberto that creates the unique sound of the Swingrowers. Vocalist Loredana Grimaldi and DJ / Producer Roberto Costa (AKA ‘Pisk’ - A local drum and bass hero on the Sicilian free-party scene) are joined in their live incarnation by a 'Manouche' guitar player from the local old-boy jazz big band with which Loredana sings in their home town. With the help of manager Giulio Castronovo, within a few short months of their inception the duo began touring Europe to play famous clubs like London’s Hootananny and Paris’s La Javà - Performing on the same stage as Edith Piaf and Django Reinhardt. And now their hard work has culminated in this exceptional album.
