Percussion concertos are more common than they used to be, but HK Gruber, whose background includes both avant-garde ensembles and mainstream orchestral playing, may be the only composer to have written more than one. Both of the works here are dense but quite entertaining. They were written some years apart; Rough Music dates from 1982-1983, while into the open…, had its premiere in 2015, in the BBC Proms performance recorded here. Rough Music is perhaps the easier introduction to Gruber's idiom, which includes a lot of percussion, even in other works.

Early trio work from pianist Clare Fischer – definitely surging ahead at this point in his career! The set's got a bit more of a freewheeling sound than some of Fischer's later, more arranged material – lots of tight piano from Clare in the lead, swung with a good blend of soul jazz energy mixed with Latin and Brazilian influences – with support from a few different rhythm teams, players who include Gary Peacock, Ralph Pena, and Albert Stinson on bass – and Gene Stone, Larry Bunker, and Colin Bailey on drums! Some of the tracks are a bit longer than you'd expect for such a record – taking things nicely past conventional trio expectations – and titles include "Billie's Bounce", "Way Down East", "Davenport Blues", "Strayhorn", "This Can't Be Love", and "Without A Song".

The year 1915 marked a tectonic shift in the history of the cello. When Zoltán Kodály completed his Sonata for Solo Cello, Op. 8, he did not merely write a piece of music; he excavated a new sonic language from the Hungarian soil. The sonata is widely regarded as the most significant work for unaccompanied cello since Johann Sebastian Bach's Cello Suites. It is celebrated for its daunting virtuosity, expanding the instrument's technical and expressive boundaries through a fusion of Hungarian folk music and modern 20th-century influences. The piece requires the cellist to tune the two lowest strings (G and C) down a half-step to F# and B.
