If this session were to be described in just one word, that would be "Power." Hard-bop specialists Mads Vinding and Alex Riel have both recorded with Dexter Gordon and have each played powerful, yet straight-ahead jazz for over thirty years. Drummer Riel has worked with hard bop leaders such as Jackie McLean, Michael Brecker, Kenny Drew, and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. Bassist Vinding, similarly, has worked with Johnny Griffin, Ed Thigpen, the Ernie Wilkins big band, and Duke Jordan. The third member of the trio, pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, with nine releases as a leader, works, as do the others, in a hard bop-vein. It would seem quite unnecessary to mention credentials like this if the artists lived in New York City or recorded with a major U.S. label; but Vinding and Riel are from Copenhagen and Pieranunzi is from Italy. Hence, their reputation may not have preceded them.

Behind his fame as jazz's doomed youth - falling from James Dean glamour to an accidental early end - it is easy to forget that Chet Baker was an intuitively brilliant trumpet improviser in a 1950s Miles Davis manner, as these tracks from Rome in 1979-80 confirm. Baker had relearned the instrument in the 1970s, heroin and irate dealers having claimed his original teeth, and he's at his late-career best here - poised in construction, seductively plummy-toned, and full of fresh ideas. Apart from My Funny Valentine (sung by Baker in his mouthful-of-dough whisper) the engaging themes are by the classy Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and saxist Maurizio Giammaco - embracing smoky ballads and luxuriously-voiced but melodically ingenious hard-bop…

A creatively inspired trio. Once again Enrico Pieranunzi has joined up with Scott Colley on double bass and Antonio Sanchez on drums for a recording session which gave rise to the amazing “Stories”, an enlightened, flowing, joyful CD. This album, recorded at Avatar Studio, New York, in February 2011, is a collection of eight tracks, most of which were composed by the Roman pianist. Jazz, Pieranunzi’s fondness for classical music, a Latin flavour by Sanchez: everything merges in a single discourse that perfectly combines different accents, allowing listeners 49 minutes of highly enjoyable, engaging, magnetic compositions. The passionate three-track opening with “No Improper Use”, “Detrás Más Allá” and “Blue Waltz”, gives way to the soft “The Slow Gene” by Scott Colley, the only song which wasn’t written by the Roman pianist…

Classical/pop, rock/classical, classical/jazz, fusion: the list of possible crossovers can get very long. What all these couplings have in common is the desire to blend two or more different languages. It is a bit like triggering a chemical reaction, the outcome of which no longer has anything to do with the original components of the reaction itself. In the more specific field of jazz/classical music crossover, the 1920s were crucial. In fact, they gave us one of the first, absolutely extraordinary, works of the genre: the famous “Rhapsody in Blue.” In this masterpiece, Gershwin achieved exceptional results thanks to his merging of elements from American popular music, particularly the blues, with others typical of the European classic tradition.

Enrico Pieranunzi is one of the most recognized jazz pianists in Europe, but he doesn't get enough exposure in the United States, since he has recorded almost exclusively for European-based labels. These sessions are a bit unusual since the pianist omits a bass player, utilizing only veteran drummer Paul Motian, with saxophonist Chris Potter guesting on three tracks. All of Pieranunzi's compositions were written specifically for these studio sessions, while "Double Excursion" consists of three separate improvisations, all of which sizzle. Potter's tenor sax is added for the mournful "Doorways," with Motian's drumming providing a bit of tension…

An acclaimed Italian jazz pianist, composer, and educator, Enrico Pieranunzi is known for his virtuosic, classical-influenced technique, nuanced sense of harmony, and elegantly restrained approach to modern post-bop jazz. Influenced heavily by Bill Evans, Pieranunzi emerged in the 1970s leading his own trio, and quickly established himself internationally as an in-demand sideman for such jazz giants as Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, and others. Along with performing, he is a dedicated teacher, having worked for many years as a full professor at the Conservatorio di Musica in Frosinone.
