Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth - Albums Collection 1969-2011 (12CD)

Make a Joyful Noise is the follow-up to 1968's Living With the Animals. This time out, Mother Earth neatly divided their joint appreciations for rural and urban American music: à la the thematic "City Side" and "Country Side." The City Side is an R&B workout, powered by a robust horn section and the vocals of Rev. Ron Stallings on burning soul cuts such as "Stop That Train," Tracy Nelson's killer performance on Naomi Neville's cooker "What Are You Trying to Do," and sultry read of Little Willie John's babymaker "Need Your Love So Bad." The Country Side is more subdued, adorned by steel guitars and Powell St. John's quavering vocals on "I'll Be Moving On" and the strange "The Fly." Nelson's version of Doug Sahm's "I Wanna Be Your Mama Again" is her blues-country gospel version of Hank Williams' honky tonk nugget "You Win Again" (with a fine fiddle solo by Johnny Gimble). Some of the guest stars on this set include Boz Scaggs, Hargus Robins, Ben Keith, D.J. Fontana, and Pete Drake. Make a Joyful Noise remains an overlooked classic from the Warner Brothers catalog that finally saw CD issue in 2004 by Wounded Bird.

Originally released in 1969 with some of Music City's most royal musicians holding court, the ten original album tunes and three other remnants of a week-long recording session are included here.

On Elvis Presley's rocker "That's All Right, Mama," Nelson sizzles, and on Boz Scaggs' almost vaudevillian "Now, You're Gone" blues she gives a Broadway-bound performance. On Chuck "The Sheik of the Blues" Willis' soft shuffle "You're Still My Baby," the harmonica and handclaps are so spirited it sounds as if the listener is in the midst of the session. The album's very best selections were the least known. The self-penned "Stay As Sweet As You Are" had a mellow Southern rock feeling with a distinctive country string refrain in the background. "Can't Go On Loving You" is sweetly plaintive, while the desperate "Wait, Wait, Wait" reveals a woman begging her man for one more chance.

A woman trusting a man whom she's found to have cheated on her yet again provides the backdrop for Hank Williams' "You Win Again." With that in mind, Nelson becomes the victim as she makes this a midtempo fifties-style R&B ballad with a keyboard workout that would make Fats Domino proud. To then say that Nelson wails her betrayal on the song would be putting it lightly. She lives it for four minutes and fifteen seconds. In fact, she lives all of these songs. That's how life must be in Tracy Nelson country.

By the time of Satisfied, Mother Earth had become pretty much a vehicle for Tracy Nelson plus backing band. There's just one original on this set, Nelson's "Andy Song," and the album sticks to a loose but R&B-focused groove, sometimes stretching the songs out in a fashion that probably would have been more tightly edited had such an approach not been in vogue in 1970. Nelson's vocals are consistently strong and stirring, and the material is commendably diverse, though overall it's just an okay album that could use a little more oomph. The white R&B vibe is tempered by strong streaks of gospel, New Orleans music, and even a bit of jazz, particularly on the smoother parts of "Groovy Way."

I'll have to drag out my ole vinyl to be sure, but I think the sequencing of this record is somewhat altered from the original. Not that it matters much, but I'm pretty sure that on the original Columbia disc, "Whatever I Am, You Made Me" was the initial cut, and the title track closed out the album. I remember because I really liked the flow of the original back then. It seemed like track was better than the last–certainly the mark of a good record in my book. By rights, a tour-de-force number like "Going Back To Tennessee" should likely be the closing number, but lo and behold, there was "Poor Man's Paradise" right after it and THAT seemed an even more appropriate ending. Call it the "encore effect"–if it were a live performance, "Tennesssee" would have ended the set and "Poor Man's" would have been the perfect encore.

No matter, in this day and age, sequencing is always up to the listener and the random play button on one's CD player. There really isn't a weak track on POOR MAN'S PARADISE, so you can scarcely go wrong with this record, no matter how you slice it or how you play it. This was Tracy's last official effort with the group. It had gone through several changes, but at this point they seemed very very comfortable with each other, and even though they were supporting one of the most dynamic singers of the era, there's a looseness and sense of camaraderie that is inviting and kind of comfy for the listener as well.

There was a certain irony in the fact that Tracy Nelson, whose vocals could be so scorching at times, seemed drawn to down-home, kick your shoes off musical settings and tunes. Never the tortured soul that Janis, say, always seemed to be, her most stirring performances seemed to be a kind of revelation, a basically sane and balanced individual momentarily revealing her most private self. Less of a soul baring than a glimpsing. Even at her bluesiest, there's always been an element of reserve and restraint. Which made her all the more intriguing when you think about it.

That restraint is evident on this album. If Columbia was hoping for Janis II when they signed her, they had another think coming. Sure she kicks up her heels grandly on a tune like KoKo Taylor's "Whatever I Am You Made Me," and the aforementioned "Poor Man's Paradise" and "Going Back To Tennessee" are certainly rousers. But the majority of the album is given over to reflective ballads and slow grooves that feature Tracy's vocals at their most sensitive and dignified. It may take a couple of tries to fully fathom the depth of emotion behind tunes like "Cruel Wind," but it's worth the effort. Highly recommended.

Life is full of mysteries. Janis Joplin becomes a musical icon. Tracy Nelson has always been something of an unknown. Yet Tracy possessed a far warmer, flexible, and expressive voice than Janis, which, as good as it was, always did pretty much the same thing.

Tracy Nelson fans are often jealous of Janis Joplin's legend. On numerous occasions I have put "Down So Low" on to play to unsuspecting and unitiated friends. I refuse to tell them who it is, and invariably they will ask by the end of the song, "Is that Janis Joplin?"

This album is marvelous testimony to just how good Tracy Nelson is. I do have a slight bone to pick with it. The title is a bit misleading: Mother Earth had many very, very good songs that featured other people singing lead than Tracy Nelson, and all of those songs were omitted.

I think there are several reasons one can point to for Tracy Nelson's failure to become as large a legend as Janis Joplin. One is pointed to by Al Kooper in the liner notes accompanying the CD: she isn't easy to categorize. Is she rock? Folk? Blues? Country? I bought my copy at Tower Records, and they keep the album in Folk. I would have put it in Rock, but anyone will have to acknowledge that she defies categories.

Another reason that Tracy Nelson has never been as widely acknowledged as she deserves is ironically because she did one song that was so stunning, so overwhelming, that all her other excellent work suffers by comparison. The song is, of course, "Down So Low." In my estimation, this song and Tracy's performance of it is one of the staggering achievements of the rock era. Greil Marcus once wrote that in this song Tracy Nelson goes to places that Janis Joplin only dreamed about. The song is so extraordinary that the album cover reads "The Best of Tracy Nelson/Mother Earth" followed by the words "Featuring Down So Low." And the entire text on the back of the CD does nothing but talk abou the song. In a way, this song destroyed her career, because it is such an amazing song and performance, that everything else in anyone's career is going to be a disappointment.

Let me try to get at the point another way. Aretha Franklin, John Lennon, Jagger/Richards, Bob Dylan. These folks belong to the highest pinnacle of rock and roll success. They produced an enormous amount of work that is the standard by which everything else in rock is measured. Other performers can be often excellent, but they really don't come up to that standard. Sheryl Crow is great, but she isn't Bob Dylan. Ever. But in "Down So Low," Tracy Nelson did a song that was so great that only occasionally have the greatest figures in the history of rock and roll done as well. Yet her other work is not up to the level of that song.

So, there are two reasons to get this album. One is to get familiar with one of the very greatest singers our country has produced in the last forty years. The other is to get your very own copy of one of the truly transcendant moments in the history of rock: "Down So Low."

Tracy Nelson's second post-Mother Earth album is similar to its predecessor, though with a bigger sound than anything she'd utilized before on record. Employing a six-piece band plus the Muscle Shoals Horns and with the Sweet Inspirations on backing vocals, producer Bob Johnston filled Nelson's accompaniment right to the brim across much of the record – and it did spill over a bit on the original release, with some muddiness in the sound on the vinyl LP. Fortunately, Nelson's vocals are more than up to the task at hand, in both volume and intensity, and they are what count, and come through no matter how busy and lush her musical surroundings ever get. There's a lot of virtuoso playing to go with her performance, to be sure, and sometimes the spotlight seems more on the band than on her. But Nelson holds her own gloriously throughout, starting with the title track opener – for a high point, look to "Lies" and the soaring "Baby I Found Out," each of which by itself would be worth the price of the album. There are also a few places, such as "Same Old Blues," where the focus leaves her for just a little too long. Still, it is unfair to criticize an album for literally being too much of a good thing, and the CD reissue avoids the modest sonic flaws that were present on the vinyl version. And in any edition, it's a powerful 40 minutes of listening.

In 1978 I was 24 years old and a sophisticated urban music lover, or so I thought. It was around that time that I was introduced to the music of Tracy Nelson, and my taste in music and perception of what good music is was immediately altered forever. Although I had heard some of the earlier efforts by this wonderfully eclectic artist, Homemade Songs was powerful enough to cause me to declare Tracy Nelson as my favorite singer shortly after I first heard it. Twenty-eight years later, she is still my favorite singer, and Homemade Songs remains one of my favorite albums of hers.

This CD represents two releases by Tracy (Homemade Songs and Come See About Me) that were originally issued on the Flying Fish label in 1978 and 1980 respectively. Of the two, Homemade Songs is my favorite, but each has its share of high-power moments. Tracy Nelson has one of the most powerful voices I've ever heard. No, make that THE most powerful voice I've ever heard, and although no mere recording can even quite capture the immense power that she presents in a live concert, this album will give you a very good idea of what she's capable of.

Homemade Songs starts off with the Randy Newman penned God' Song, which was also recorded by Etta James. Tracy reduces the lyrics to a sparse scale-down of the previous versions, but she does not hesitate to blow the roof off at the climax. Her final notes are so overwhelming that I sometimes stop the recording after the first track, just so I can allow my ears to rest for a moment and reflect on what a potent statement the song is. I've Been There Before is an R & B influenced ode to love; not so much love lost or love found, but the wonder of the state itself, and it's a perfect prelude to The Ice Man, which is all about the sweaty-palmed terror of finding true love ("It's not your fault, it's not even your concern. You ain't done a thing but just to try and be yourself. I can't get over my fear of being burned, I've no way to say I warn ya, but there just ain't no help for me…") Tightrope, which ended side one of the original vinyl, perfectly completes the love trilogy. In between we get a country-influenced tribute to a train (yes, that's right - a song about a choo-choo) and if you don't hear it with your own ears, you won't believe that such perfectly written imagery could be written about a mere bunch of railroad cars ("Somewhere along the Savannah, she was lifted away at the end of her day with her box-car lovers in sight. Still I can hear her arriving - whoo-whoo…"). When Tracy sings, "Whoo- whoo", her magnificent lungs lovingly caress each syllable until you're sure you've never heard anything more passionate in your life, and it's easy to forget that this is NOT a love song, but a nostalgic tribute to technology of the past.

Side two of the original vinyl opened with You Don't Need To Move A Mountain, lyrically one of the most beautiful tributes to deep love I've ever heard ("You don't need to move a mountain, tame the raging river, or make your body clean. You don't need to swim an ocean; just lay your head on my breast and rest a while with me".) The bouncy R & B influenced She Taking My Part (And It's Breaking My Heart) will have you snapping your fingers and moving around the room.

Carlene Carter Routh wrote the stunningly gorgeous song Friends of A Kind, which she performs with Tracy as a duet. Dianne Davidson, who Tracy has referred to in her concert gigs as "one of the finest songwriters in Nashville" proves the point with Sounds of the City, an aching paean to life on the road. And Suddenly is as bouncy an up-tempo number as you could want, never mind that it's about lost love ("Suddenly, you're not mine, well no more; suddenly, things ain't like they were before…"). I you really want to be impressed with sheer vocal ability, wait for Tracy to come out blasting at the beginning of the third chorus, right after the instrumental break ("Sudden-lee-ee, my li-ifeee AIN'T worth livinnnnnnn'; sudden-lee-ee I get no pleasure out of givin'…"). You will sit up and take notice, I promise.

And that's just the first ten tracks that make up the original Homemade Songs album. The next ten tracks, all R & B or R & B influenced gems, make up the Come See About Me album. Just the blues influenced Walk Away, which has become an important part of Tracy's live repertoire, makes the album worth every single penny.

Tracy Nelson is a powerhouse of a singer, and Homemade Songs is one of the strongest albums she's ever released in her (so far) 22 album career. If you are even marginally familiar with Tracy's work, but don't have this album, you will want to get it. If you have never heard her before, Homemade Songs is definitely recommended as a good place to start.

I'm concerned to learn that Tracy Nelson, who has a new record due shortly, has left Rounder Records. It seems like they were such a good fit. After all but disappearing in the 80s, Tracy resurfaced on Rounder in the 90s and released three great albums (a term I still prefer over CD, since it stresses form not format). She wound up the decade recording and touring (to great acclaim) with two of label-mates and kindred spririts, Marcia Ball and Irma Thomas. I can only hope that as she moves on to a new label, Tracy Nelson remains on the artistic roll she's been on for nearly a decade.

"I Feel So Good" was Tracy's second release for Rounder, and you could tell that she was genuinely feeling good about being back. She had sounded a wee bit tentative on the first Rounder album ("In the Here and Now") but just listen to how she kicks up her heels on "Feel So Good."

If you see Tracy live (which I recommend), you'll note that at least seven of these tracks remain in her standard repertoire. Although she can get into a slow blues or a modern ballad like nobody's business, she tends go with the uptempo knock-your-socks-off numbers live. And this release is choc-a-block with powerhouse tracks. From the openening strains of "I Want to Know" (Tracy double-tracked, my definition of heaven) to the rollicking "Meet Me Halfway," this album cooks! I originally had this release on cassette and was almost grateful that each side ended in a down tempo number (the reflective "Words Unspoken" and "Love Won't Come," a beautiful duet with Maura O'Connell). The rest of the album is such a work-out, I needed the rest.

Tracy Nelson's three CD releases (four counting "Sing It" with Marcia Ball and Irma Thomas) on Rounder have all been remarkable in different ways. Always an eclectic artist, she towed a bluesier line on the first two "comeback" releases ("In The Here and Now" and "I Feel So Good"), apparently at the label's request. With her third effort for Rounder, however, she breaks away from a strict blues setting, and sounds all the better for it. As great as the preceding two releases were, Nelson really cuts loose here. Beginning with "Livin' on Love," a rollicking duet with Delbert McClinton, she goes on to classic Bessie Smith ("Got Me Goin'") and her own "Playin' It Safe," recorded twice (it's repeated as a surprise bonus track at the end of the record) a gospel inspired number that is reminiscent of her early work with Mother Earth. Blues purists will likely balk at the pop feel of Dianne Davidson's "Tonight I'll Dream" and Tracy's own "Somebody Loves You," but no one could deny that these are gorgeous, heartfelt vocals that could have cracked AOR playlists and won Tracy the wider audience she deserves. Numbers like "You Never Broke My Heart" and the title track just plain cook. Tracy is in great voice and seems to be having a ball on this record. She shares vocal duties with Maria Muldaur, Phoebe Snow and Bonnie Raitt on Andy McMahon's song "Ladies Man," and it's a wonderful moment, one that anticpates "Sing It" in its female camaraderie. Still I have to admit,I rather prefer Tracy solo–she is just such a powerful singer, I find it impossible to focus on anyone else when I'm listening to her.

I've written numerous reviews of Tracy Nelson CDs for Amazon.com and elsewhere. A true believer, I have long felt the need to get the word out about this great but sorely underappreciated singer. There are few artists out there who rival her in terms of soulfulness or power. She is also something of a perfectionist and has, resultantly, often downplayed the quality of her previous releases. One critic once noted that she almost never actively promoted her own recordings on stage, and that seems to have been true for the most part. At most I think I've heard her introduce a song in concert with a passing remark like, "This one's from the new record." And I'd think, "OK, Tracy, tell the folks what the NAME of the record is! They don't ALL scour the stores like I do for anything with your name on it." When I heard that she was extremely happy with this CD, naturally I got excited. As you can see by her own comments below, she is eager to get the word out on this one (and for people to get the title right too–it's shown up in more than one listing as "Ebony & Ivory"). How "ironic" to have potential sales of this wonderful record possibly scuttled by a typo.

I received my autographed copy of E&I a week ago and have been playing it virtually non-stop since. As a fan, I love almost all of her recorded works, but I can readily understand why this recording is special to the artist herself. Tracy has never sounded better. She sounds truly energized and committed. From the first track ("You Will Find Me There") on, I could hear playful twists in the phrasing that I've never heard her do before. And some of the tracks, e.g. Mose Allison's jazz standard "How Much Truth," provide whole new ground for this brilliant vocalist to explore. She pulls it all off with aplomb. Some performers make a big deal about "reinventing" themselves by changing their image every now and then. Tracy Nelson reinvents herself with each new song. And ultimately, with her, it's all about the singing.

I understand why one of the previous reviewers and some other fans might be a little put off by the eclecticism displayed on this album. Nelson has never ever been a one-genre artist however. It is true that her last label seemed to want her to focus mainly on blues-based material, and it's understandable why. She sings the blues with astonishing power and conviction–but it is not all that she's about. As with Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur and the recently re-surfaced Judy Henske, Nelson is beyond any one musical genre. Her eclecticism is a deeply rooted and genuine one, however. It's clear that she's not just out to put on a variety show.

Every track on this CD presents us with a different side of this great singer. She teams up once again with old buddy and former label mate, Marcia Ball for the rollicking "Got A New Truck" and graciously acknowledges a new generation of emerging talent by recording the songs of young artists like Bekka Bramlett (Bonnie and Delaney's daughter) and her Tennessee neighbor Alice Newman, whom she's known since she (Alice) was a child. The latter song, the beautiful "Last Chance" is given an Irish folkie treatment and is just haunting.

It's important to stress that the end result is not a mere grab bag of styles: it is a reflection of a complex artist who has come into her own and who will hopefully finally get the audience she deserves.

You can go home again, as Tracy Nelson proves on her first studio album in six years. In 1969 she released Tracy Nelson Country, and although she has never abandoned her roots in that sound, her career has gradually shifted, positioning her closer to the blues belter her remarkable voice is naturally geared toward. Nelson's husky vibrato, although an acquired taste, is used to stunning effect on this set of ten country & western covers and one original. Recorded in a studio underneath the house that Jim Reeves once lived in, Nelson approaches these dusty classics and obscurities with old-school crooning. Despite the opening jazz of "Cow Cow Boogie," whose arrangement Nelson credits to Ella Fitzgerald, and the closing Cajun swing of Don Gibson's "Oh Lonesome Me," this is a ballad-heavy collection. Jim Reeves' weepy waltz-time "Four Walls" sets the countrypolitan tone as Nelson's gospel-charged delivery brings gutsy emotion to what was once a rather gooey pop standard. The collection is most successful when it uncovers lost gems such as the midtempo title cut, originally an album track for Juice Newton and Anne Murray. Here Nelson and her backing vocalists bring religious fervor to the tune, elevating it to a new standard even the writer probably never imagined. The Everly Brothers' B-side "I Wonder If I Care as Much" and Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone" come alive in fresh arrangements. Another waltz-time weeper, "I've Never Loved Anyone More," grabbed from the Lynn Anderson catalog, features a perfectly tinged, sad piano solo from Steve Conn that melts with Nelson's emotionally charged vocal. Her band, featuring veterans such as bassist Byron House and string wizard Fats Kaplin, finds the sweet spot by providing classy backing but letting Nelson's booming voice take the spotlight. Guy Clark guests on "Salt of the Earth," the disc's only original, and brings his own salty voice to a leisurely, melancholy folk story-song that he also co-authored. The creaky "The Three Bells," originally a '50s pop-country hit from the Browns, also gets an airing, but despite Nelson's best intentions, the song is the album's one misstep because – even in her hands – it remains pretty sappy and terribly dated. The singer connects on the rest, though, and while this is miles away from anything on contemporary country radio, it radiates a charm and passion impossible to find in the slick, obvious, emotionless vacuum of prepackaged, over-produced twang that passes as country music in the new millennium.

The back story to this album doesn't make it any better – it's already a terrific roots release from one of this generation's most powerful singers – but it helps the listener appreciate that it even exists. The tapes were rescued from a 2010 fire that destroyed Nelson's 100-year-old farm house, leaving them and the studio as the only surviving parts of the home. The title was decided on before the tragedy but it takes on additional gravitas knowing that this is clearly a woman who understands and has lived her fair share of the blues. Although Nelson's previous effort was a country set, she returns to the blues in a big way on this dozen-track collection of covers from some of the genre's greatest names. Relatively obscure songs from Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Lightnin' Hopkins, Willie Dixon, and Percy Mayfield, among others are bolstered not only by Nelson's always dynamic vocals, but by a sharp, sympathetic band that includes veterans such as keyboardist Jimmy Pugh, guitarist Mike Henderson, and especially bassist Byron House, whose work on standup provides a rubbery bottom that synchs perfectly with the rest of the musicians and Nelson's approach to the material. The playing crackles, inspiring the singer to some of her finest, toughest vocals on selections like Howlin' Wolf's "Howlin' for My Baby," a raucous duet with Angela Strehli. Marcia Ball also swings by to add her piano and vocals to some barroom boogie on a blistering version of Reed's "Shoot My Baby" that also features a gutsy slide guitar solo from Henderson. Nelson's notorious husky vibrato is in fine form on a gospel/soul reading of Joe Tex's classic "The Love You Save," arguably the disc's most riveting performance. Pugh moves to organ for a funky second-line reading of Hopkins' "Feel So Bad" which exudes a hypnotic groove and moves the tune down to the dusty saloons of New Orleans. There's no filler here as Nelson connects with her backing musicians and tunes perfect for her plucky, brassy style. Although she has recorded in various genres, she is such a convincing presence working with this impressive group of talents and distinctive blues tracks, that she could easily devote herself full-time to this genre. Regardless, this is a moving, vibrant recording made even more mesmerizing by the fact that it almost never saw the light of day.
