Founded in France in 2014 by Cuban gambist Ronald Martin Alonso, Ensemble Vedado has its roots in the Centre International des Chemins du Baroque in Sarrebourg, Lorraine, where numerous paths of Baroque music from Europe to the New World and back again were explored. It performed works by Marais in Cuba, where the composer Calixto Álvarez wrote the Folias Americanas based on Marais' Folies d'Espagne. This work is dedicated to the composer's daughter, Calia Álvarez, a gambist in the Ensemble Vedado. Marais and Álvarez can now be heard together in this recording.

À l’instar de la sonatine d'Horovitz ou de la sonate de Bernstein, le jazz comme inspiration semble irriguer en filigrane la quasi totalité des œuvres de ce programme. Pour Alia Mens, interpréter cette musique aujourd'hui n'est pas seulement affaire de connaissance. Il s'agit de retrouver cette énergie de persuasion incroyablement intense qui est à la source de cette musique et permet à l'auditeur comme à l’interprète de s'arracher du quotidien pour nous propulser dans la puissance révélatrice de l'instant.
L’œuvre que Bach conçoit, issue d’un texte, a la capacité (quasi fantastique quand on interroge au plus près les ressorts que la musique exerce sur nous) d’animer, littéralement, une description scénique, de donner chair et os à une pensée, de rendre audible l’ineffable. Afin que musique et langage puissent réaliser ce qu’aucun des deux ne peut faire séparément.
Cette quête, comme l'essence de cette musique, va au-delà de la recherche du beau et n'a rien à faire avec le divertissement, mais plutôt avec ce qui semble être un espace capable de renouveler l'être.

"Tre donne belle" is a vocal trio program with polyphonic repertoire from the late Renaissance and early Baroque, conceived by the singer Vivabiancaluna Biffi, who, in addition to Alla francesca and Discantus by Brigitte Lesne, can also be heard in various ensembles by Jordi Savall.Without disregarding the precise notations of the composition, they opted for a freer interpretation, quite common at the time of its composition, with, for example, frequent changes of register.

Einige Takte reichen aus, um ein Werk von Prokofjew zu identifizieren. Die Kompositionen fordern uns heraus, ziehen uns an und können uns manchmal aus dem Gleichgewicht bringen.
Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts erkunden neue Sprachen Terrae incognitae. Was noch erstaunlicher erscheint und was die vierte Aufnahme der Pianistin Véronique Bonnecaze für das Label Paraty beweist, ist die Tatsache, dass Prokofjew zwar eine geradezu leidenschaftliche Vorliebe für aggressivste harmonische und rhythmische Reibungen wie in der sechsten Sonate zeigt, sich aber gleichzeitig als ein Genie der Melodie erweist. Er überwältigt, wenn er sich der slawischen Melancholie hingibt.

eune, quand on regarde l’Everest,… on se dit qu’un jour on va le gravir ; il faut se préparer, mais surtout, un jour, il faut y aller…L’Everest, c’est toute l’œuvre de Bach ; les Variations Goldberg ne dérogent pas à la règle mais en les comparant à d’autres intégrales (les Partitas ou même Le Clavier Bien tempéré), les Goldberg ne sont pas forcément plus difficiles à aborder. L’image de l’Everest pour moi, c’est le fait d’aborder une œuvres atypique, longue de plus d’une heure, sans pause et surtout, et ce n’est pas la moindre chose, le fait de connaître beaucoup d’autres interprètes qui l’ont gravi avant moi. Donc les références sont nombreuses et par conséquent la question se pose véritablement, pourquoi aborder les Goldberg aujourd’hui dans le cadre d’un enregistrement ? C’est bien là que se trouve la vraie question.

Pierre Colin, a great unknown. The archives of the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna contain a large folio (Bol SP A 48) devoted to masses that were clearly used frequently in the cathedral. Composers are not credited, but a study of the source shows that there are more works by Pierre Colin than by any other composer; four of his masses were copied here for use in the cathedral during the third quarter of the 16th century. The same is true of the archives of the cathedrals of Treviso, Toledo and even Guatemala City, which possess manuscript copies taken from printed originals of the masses and motets of a composer who seems to have spent his entire musical career in the Burgundian city of Autun. Who is this composer? How does one account for such success? How did he fit into the musical world of his day? What is distinctive about his style? These are questions we will try to answer in order to shed light on some of the works presented here.

This programme focuses on the verse anthems of two leading musicians from the Restoration period’s church music revival. They stand as representatives of two generations who were deeply marked by the troubled socio-political context of early Stuart England, and both found their creativity temporarily restricted and sacrificed on the altar of Puritanism. Matthew Locke (ca 1621-1677) received his first musical training as a chorister at the cathedral of his native Exeter. During the turbulent years of the English Civil War, he went into exile in the Netherlands, a hive of Italianism, where he became familiar with the ultramontane style and probably converted to Catholicism.

Musicians did not wait for the contemporary era to illustrate the chirping, trilling and squawking of birds. In the midst of the Renaissance, at the beginning of the 16th century, Clément Janequin was already creating the basis of their re-composition by mankind, with the polyphonic song Le chant des oyseaulx ("The Song of the Birds"). The composer stylized animal song using onomatopes and noise-based sounds.But it is without contest during the 20th century, with Olivier Messiaen, that we find the first true transcriptions of birdsong as a structural element of the score. In his wake, other composers borrowed the same path, with diverse objectives, means and results. All of them confessed to having a common reference point, upstream of their master, in the tutelary figure of Claude Debussy, inventor of a new style, free, ductile and natural – in a single word, modern.

Sébastien Llinares Following classical training and studies in musicology and jazz, Sébastien Llinares was noticed at the International Music Academy of Cagliari (Sardinia). As a result, he received a scholarship to join Rafael Andia’s class at the École Normale Supérieure de Musique in Paris. Further supported by the Zalesky Foundation, he quickly obtained his Diplôme Supérieur de Concertiste. At this stage his professor commented that “Sébastien has a unique talent that puts him on a par with the greatest. A limitless technique allied with a remarkable sound give his music uncommon strength. He shows such facility that one never notices any effort, which is rare even among the greatest guitarists”. Today, Sébastien Llinares explores the repertoire with the intention of creating a new contemporary guitar style, where formal clarity, historical consciousness and spontaneity are allied in a dialogue between styles and epochs. He plays a modern concert guitar by the luthier Graham Caldersmith and a Baroque guitar by Charles Besnainou.

Pour Manuel Vilas, harpiste spécialisé en harpe dite « de dos órdenes », harpe ibérique à deux rangées de cordes croisées, la réalisation de cet enregistrement marque l’aboutissement d’un projet de vie. Le nom de Diego Fernández de Huete, Vilas l’entendit mentionné par son professeur, Nuria Llopis, lors de sa toute première leçon de harpe « de dos órdenes », au début des années 1990. La première pièce qu'il travailla en tant qu’étudiant fut la gaita (« cornemuse »), qui figure ici à la plage dix-sept, et, à partir de ce moment, la musique de Huete l’accompagna, aussi bien dans ses années de formation que dans ses récitals, il ne manque jamais de proposer des œuvres du compositeur.
