VA - Ote Maloya (2017)

The compilation "Oté Maloya" continues the compilation "Soul Sok Séga" also released by Strut in 2016. Because Maloya and Séga are both genres that originate in Mauritius and La Réunion in the Indian Ocean and were developed there centuries ago by the slaves of the sugar plantations. Characteristic is the merging of European and African influences. "Oté Maloya" is dedicated to a period between 1975 and 1986 when Maloya finally broke from the shackles of his past on La Réunion and became the prevailing populism of the island. Already in the 1930ern singled musicians thereby to play Maloya songs publicly. From the fifties first Maloya records appeared, and in the decade, Maloya advanced among the young people to protest music. As a new generation of artists from the mid-1970s onwards, traditional Maloya songs not only began with their own poetic texts, but also to orchestrate them with Western, African and Indian sound artists, and to incorporate jazz, funk, rock and psychedelia elements , Maloya experienced an eerie popularity and came to the center of society.
