Flamboyant British icons of the 1970s whose nasty fusion of heavy metal, glam rock, and sneering cynicism influenced many punk bands. Collection includes: 'Mott The Hoople' (1969); 'Mad Shadows' (1970); 'Wildlife' (1971); 'Brain Capers' (1971); 'All The Young Dudes' (1972); 'Mott' (1973); 'The Hoople' (1974); 'Live' (1974) 30th Anniversary Edition 2004; 'Rock And Roll Queen' (1974); 'Drive On' (1975); 'Greatest Hits' (1976); 'Two Miles From Heaven' (1980); 'The Ballad Of Mott: A Retrospective' (1993); 'Fairfield Halls, Live 1970' (2007).

Mott the Hoople are one of the great also-rans in the history of rock & roll. Though Mott scored a number of album rock hits in the early '70s, the band never quite broke through into the mainstream. Nevertheless, their nasty fusion of heavy metal, glam rock, and Bob Dylan's sneering hipster cynicism provided the groundwork for many British punk bands, most notably the Clash. At the center of Mott the Hoople was lead vocalist/pianist Ian Hunter, a late addition to the band who developed into its focal point as his songwriting grew. Hunter was able to subvert rock & roll conventions with his lyrics, and the band – led by guitarist Mick Ralphs – had a tough, muscular sound that kept the group firmly in hard rock territory, even when flirting with homosexual imagery and glammy makeup. However, their lack of success meant that they inevitably splintered apart in the '70s, with Ralphs forming Bad Company and Hunter launching a cult solo career.

Mick Ralphs (lead guitar, vocal), Verden Allen (organ), Overend Pete Watts (bass), and Dale "Buffin" Griffin (drums) formed Silence in 1968 and began playing around their hometown of Hereford, England. Early in 1969, the band added vocalist Stan Tippens and landed a record contract with Island (Atlantic in the U.S.), heading to London to record with producer Guy Stevens, whose first move was to change the band's name to Mott the Hoople, after a Willard Manus novel. By the summer, Tippens was fired, later becoming the band's road manager, and was replaced by Ian Hunter. Mott the Hoople's eponymous debut album was released in the fall of 1969 and it became an underground hit, known for its fusion of Blonde on Blonde-era Dylan and heavy metal, as well for its straight cover of Sonny Bono's "Laugh at Me" and its pounding instrumental version of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me."

Despite all of the attention, Mott the Hoople received, it didn't sell well and neither did its poorly reviewed 1970 follow-up, Mad Shadows. The band returned in 1971 with the country-tinged Wildlife, which was its least popular record to date. Despite their lack of sales, Mott the Hoople had gained a cult following in Britain through their constant touring. At a concert at the Royal Albert Hall in July 1971, the band sparked a mini-riot that led the venue to ban rock concerts for a number of years. More than any of their previous releases, Brain Capers (1971) demonstrated the band's live power, but when it failed to sell, the group was prepared to disband.

Just as the band was about to split, David Bowie intervened and convinced the group to stay together. Riding at the height of his Ziggy Stardust popularity, Bowie agreed to produce Mott's next album and offered "Suffragette City" for the bandmembers to record. They refused the song, asking for "Drive-In Saturday" instead. They eventually settled for "All the Young Dudes," which became the group's breakthrough hit. An explicitly gay anthem recorded by a heterosexual band, "All the Young Dudes" became the anthem for the glam rock era, becoming a number three hit in the U.K. and a Top 40 hit in the U.S. in the summer of 1972. An album of the same name was released on Columbia Records in the fall, and it became a hit in the U.K. and the U.S.

Allen left the band before the recording of the group's follow-up to All the Young Dudes, citing Hunter's reluctance to record his songs. A concept album about a rock band struggling for success, Mott, released in the summer 1973, expanded the band's success, receiving good reviews and peaking at number seven in Britain and number 35 in America. "All the Way from Memphis" and "Roll Away the Stone" became Top Ten hits in the U.K., confirming the band's status as one of the leaders of the glam rock movement. In the summer of 1974, Hunter published Diary of a Rock Star to great acclaim in the U.K.

While the bandmembers were finally experiencing the success that they had desired, the group was beginning to fall apart. Frustrated with Allen's departure, as well as the fact that his song "Can't Get Enough" was out of Hunter's range, Ralphs left Mott in late 1973 to form Bad Company with Paul Rodgers. He was replaced by former Spooky Tooth guitarist Luther Grosvenor, who changed his name to Ariel Bender upon joining the band; keyboardist Morgan Fisher also joined the group. The new lineup toured in late 1973, and the concerts were documented on 1974's Mott the Hoople Live. The live record was released after The Hoople appeared in the spring, peaking at 11 in the U.K. and 28 in the U.S. on the strength of the singles "The Golden Age of Rock & Roll" and "Foxy Foxy." Former Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson replaced Bender in the fall of 1974 upon Hunter's request. Within a few months, the pair left the band to begin working as a duo. The remaining members of Mott the Hoople added guitarist Ray Major and vocalist Nigel Benjamin, truncating their name to Mott. The new incarnation of the group released Drive On (1975) and Shouting and Pointing (1976) to little attention before adding John Fiddler as their lead singer and changing their name to British Lions. They split up two years later.

Though the allegiance between Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson was short-lived, it was well-received and the two would continue to sporadically work together until Ronson's death in 1993. Hunter pursued a moderately successful solo career, highlighted by his eponymous 1975 album and 1979's You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic. Hunter's "Ships" was covered by Barry Manilow in 1975, while Great White took his "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" into the Top Ten in the early '90s.

Mott The Hoople - Mott The Hoople (1969) Remastered 2003
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 302 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 106 Mb

Mott the Hoople's debut album arrived in one of the most eye-catching sleeves of the era, and the music within did not disappoint. Paired with producer Guy Stevens, guitarist Mick Ralphs recalled, "we'd go into the studio, get drunk, have a huge meal sent in at great expense, all before we'd play a note. Then [Guy]'d say, 'right, let's wreck the studio. And we'd knock a few chairs over, and then we'd play." Mott The Hoople would reflect this attitude perfectly.

In keeping with the band's youth, almost half of the album comprised covers: Ralphs brought in the Kinks' "You Really Got Me," rendered a churning instrumental after Stevens decided a vocal take did nothing whatsoever to distinguish the performance; Stevens himself championed Doug Sahm's "At the Crossroads," while Ian Hunter resurrected Sonny Bono's "Laugh at Me" from his own audition. Hunter and Ralphs, meanwhile, linked for the 11-minute epic "Half Moon Bay," a song that rumor claims is actually Dion's "Your Own Backyard" played backwards.

Ralphs alone came up with the instant classic "Rock and Roll Queen," an anthem on a par with any of the age's better-known chestbeaters; while Stevens developed the record's stirring conclusion, a 92-second slice from the band's ten-minute finale to "You Really Got Me." "The original take, following the three-minute song, was increasingly frenzied nonsense, getting faster and faster until chaos prevailed," drummer Buffin remembered. "Wrath and Wroll" caught the end of the full take. And because it was one of "Guy's orchestrated lunacies," he was handed the composer credits.

The best of the session outtakes have appeared elsewhere over the years; Angel Air's brilliantly remastered reissue, however, draws out a fine instrumental of "Find Your Way," and a live take on Neil Young's "Ohio" as bonus tracks, both of which remain perfectly in keeping with the album itself.

Mott The Hoople - Mad Shadows (1970) Remastered Reissue 2003

If Mott the Hoople's debut album cheerfully careened all over the place, their second, Mad Shadows, has one direction – downward into dense murk. Cutting out most of their humor and ratcheting up the volume, the group turns out seven songs that alternate between thundering rockers and sludgy introspection. This all sounds good on paper, but Mad Shadows isn't a thrilling journey into the darkside, simply because the band and producer Guy Stevens are so unfocused that it barely holds together, despite such fine moments as the rampaging "Walkin' with a Mountain" and the closing ballad "When My Mind's Gone." Any record with songs as strong as these is worth hearing, and it's possible to find the confusion itself rather fascinating, but only if you're dedicated enough to delve into darkness with the band. Otherwise, this is primarily of interest as a transitional affair, with its best moments showcased on the excellent compilation, Backsliding Fearlessly. [Angel Air reissued a remastered version of the album in 2003, and included two bonus tracks: an almost poisonous outtake version of "How Long," a song that, two albums later, would be reborn as "Death May Be Your Santa Claus," and "It Would Be a Pleasure."]

Mott The Hoople - Albums Collection 1969-2007 (16CD) [Re-Up]

Mott The Hoople - Wildlife (1971) Remastered 2006
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 350 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 115 Mb
Label: Universal / Island | # UICY-93104 | Time: 00:48:02 | Scans included

In common with the rest of Angel Air's Mott the Hoople remasters, vastly improved sound, a fat booklet and two bonus tracks – studio outtakes of Jerry Lee Lewis' "It'll Be Me," and Mountain's "Long Red" – round out the reissue of Wildlife. But really, they're simply the icing on a cake that already packs more into its span than either of the band's earlier albums, and most of their later ones. Ian Hunter explained, "after the debacle of Mad Shadows, I think it was Mick Ralphs, the voice of reason, who suggested we do some nice songs." Ralphs himself continued, "nice is a horrible word, but it is a nice album. We needed that to survive." Indeed, for all its understatement and softness, Wildlife is the album where Mott the Hoople finally came of age; certainly it is the one where Ian Hunter at last shed his lyrical self-consciousness. Ralphs' songs were the ones which grabbed your attention first, the lazy L.A. nightlife put-down of "Whisky Women"; the grown-up-wrong whine of "Wrong Side of the River." But Hunter's were the ones which hit home the hardest. Though he placed only three songs on the record (compared to Ralphs' four), all three remain classics: the aching autobiography of "Waterlow" and "Angel of Eighth Avenue," and the contemplative "The Original Mixed Up Kid" – "probably one of the best songs I ever wrote," Hunter later reflected. Add a ten-minute live rock & roll romp, and a startling rendition of Melanie's "Lay Down," and Wildlife emerges the album that should have broken Mott the Hoople wide open. Instead it did no more or less than either of its predecessors, and the group labored on in absurd obscurity.

If ever an album demanded an "ultimate edition" type of repackaging, it is Mott the Hoople's Brain Capers, a record that was so divisive, so damaged, and ultimately so destructive that the bandmembers themselves needed two goes at getting it all down on tape – one self-produced, the other with regular producer Guy Stevens – before finally emerging with, as Ian Hunter put it, the sound of a band tearing itself apart. They broke up just months later. Tantalizing snippets from the unused portion of the sessions have been scattered across a wealth of compilations, and Angel Air's remastering adds one more to the pile, an alternate version of the multi-hued panic of "The Journey." (The other bonus cut, a live version of the non-LP "Midnight Lady" single, is more or less dispensable.) It's a shame – bolstered, as it already is, by best-ever sound quality and a superb booklet, this edition of Brain Capers should have taken the opportunity to bring everything together. Instead…well, maybe some day. That is, of course, the only regret one can possibly feel as Mott the Hoople's fourth and (had it not been for Bowie's subsequent intervention) final album. Hunter explained, "We were getting complacent. If you are a band like us, a lot of the adrenalin is set off by the audience. When you are in a studio, it's a very barren sort of atmosphere, and it's hard to get the substitute – to get the same kind of adrenaline into your body. You have to get yourself into a kind of rage. Some people get stoned, some get drunk. We smashed a few things about." And, while he admitted that "the thought of wrecking a studio seems rather stupid, I can assure you we were pretty dead when we went in there, and five days later, we were really excited." The sessions reflect that excitement, transforming themselves before the band's very eyes into what Ian Hunter later called "three days of madness, done very quickly." Song titles were changed as their nature developed – "Mental Train" became "The Moon Upstairs," "How Long" was reworked first as "A Duck Can Swim With Me" and then as "Death May Be Your Santa Claus." The album itself came perilously close to being titled AC/DC before producer Stevens hit upon the far more suitable Brain Capers. The grinding riff that wraps up "The Journey" was reborn as the cacophonic closer "Wheel of the Quivering Meat Conception," and the brace of covers that hove into view – "Darkness Darkness" and "Your Own Back Yard" – were steamrolled as thoroughly as the original material. The result would later be tagged among the least commercial albums ever released by a so-called rising rock band. But Mott was sick of rising and wound up, instead, with what rates among the most important of its age, as Hunter later realized. "I didn't listen to [that album] for years, and then the punks started talking about it. You can actually hear the Sex Pistols loud and clear."

Mott The Hoople - Albums Collection 1969-2007 (16CD) [Re-Up]

Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes (1972) Remastered 2006
Warning! This edition is identical to the CD included in the box set “Original Albums Classic”

Legacy's remastered reissue of Mott the Hoople's All the Young Dudes pays homage to a true rock & roll myth and one of the great recordings of the early '70s – whether the "official" critics lists reflect that or not. Ben Edmonds' excellent, even poetic liner notes tell the whole story, yet a sketch of it is worth repeating here: in March of 1972, Mott, frustrated by a rough gig in Switzerland, poor album sales, and the failure to crack the charts or fill concert halls despite a small but rabid following in the U.K. and an even smaller one in the U.S. – though critics liked them and they filled halls in Detroit with insanely wild fans – decided to hang it up. As Edmonds accurately points out, the band was unable to capture the wild, frenetic roots rock & roll energy (combined with hard rock) that its stage show was drenched with. Enter David Bowie, a one-hit wonder with "Space Oddity," who was trying to reinvent himself with a character named Ziggy Stardust. He loved Mott. He offered to produce the set and offered them a song, the title track. The rest is history. "All the Young Dudes" was the band's first bona fide chart success, and helped to kick off the glam era, though Mott were not a glam band. Live, they possessed the crazy, danger-channeling spirit of truly edge-walking performers like Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard, yet had every bit of the swagger and spit of the Rolling Stones, the Faces, and the Kinks. Other tracks on the disc that struck pay dirt for fans and the uninitiated were the anthemic strutter "One of the Boys," the loose and woolly "Jerkin' Crocus," and Mick Ralphs' "Ready for Love," a song he later resurrected to chart success after leaving Mott to join Bad Company. And finally there was perhaps the finest version ever recorded of Lou Reed's classic "Sweet Jane."

While the album, presented in gloriously remastered sound, offers listeners an entirely new hearing of one of rock's most enduring outings, the bonus material included here is the stuff of legend; it cements the Mott myth. There are seven bonus cuts on the set. First there are demo versions of "One of the Boys," "Momma's Little Jewel" (then called "Black Scorpio"), and "Sea Diver" (then titled "Ride on the Sun"). These tracks, while rough, contain some of the wild abandon Mott exhibited live – and there is further evidence of that here. There is a 45-rpm version of "One of the Boys," tightened up and mixed to stun. A real lo-fi gem included here is "All the Young Dudes," with Bowie on lead and chorus vocals. It's inferior to the album version with Ian Hunter on lead (though Bowie remains in the chorus), but it gave Hunter a road map for his own performance. Finally, there are two tracks from the Hammersmith Odeon, "Sucker" and "Sweet Jane," that reveal the sheer raw and crazy magic of Mott live. Both of these cuts are simply out to lunch in their abandonment to the music itself. "Sweet Jane," in particular, has none of the pretty guitar intro that the studio version does; it's all power chords and Hunter letting out the words, cool, collected, and ready to ramp it all up – and he does as the band plays double time. He keeps it all grounded, having both the audience and the swirling, stomping music in the palm of his hand. Check out Ralphs' guitar solo in the middle; it's utterly badass. For anyone who ever even cared about rock & roll in the 1970s, this is one of those records that is a must-have. One hopes that the reissue of All the Young Dudes will spur a Mott revival in the same way that T. Rex are revived every few years. Legacy did a masterful job and treated the presentation of this with all the care a classic deserves.

Mott The Hoople - Albums Collection 1969-2007 (16CD) [Re-Up]

Mott The Hoople - Mott (1973) Remastered 2006
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 338 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 134 Mb
Label: Columbia / Legacy | # 82796 93810 2 | Time: 00:58:42 | Scans ~ 41 Mb

Legacy's remastered and reissued edition of Mott the Hoople's most successful album is presented wonderfully and respectfully – not even the hyper-critical Ian Hunter can really complain about the way the label treated it. Historically, Mott the Hoople enjoyed chart success with All the Young Dudes, both the album and the single. The collaboration with David Bowie worked like a charm and brought the Mott magic to the studio for the first time. They had moved to Columbia Records from Island (in the U.K. – their albums in the States had been released by Atlantic). Mott had also signed with Bowie's manager Tony Defries. However, trouble loomed once again for a band that had seen more than their fair share of it . Defries' attention was occupied with Bowie's rising star and he had little time for the band. Terminating that contract, they also lost Verden Allen, the keyboardist who was so much a part of the sound on All the Young Dudes; he was a bedrock of their sound. He left because he felt his own songs weren't a big enough part of the Mott mix. The band decided not to replace him. They also decided to produce their next album themselves, against the wishes of the label. The album was titled, simply, Mott. Engineers like Bill Price, Alan Harris, and a very young John Leckie were important collaborators. The album itself struck pay dirt and was hailed as the best album the band ever released. This is an amazing thing given that a huge chunk of it is dedicated to lamenting the corruption and frustration of the music biz. Arranged by Ian Hunter who wrote or co-wrote everything on the set except Mick Ralphs' "I'm a Cadillac/El Camino Dolo Roso," the album contains many of Mott's best-loved songs including "All the Way from Memphis," "Whizz Kid," "Honaloochie Boogie," and of course, the classic "I Wish I Was Your Mother." Rolling Stone called the record "the best record by the best band of the early seventies." OK. That's easy to buy given the group's live shows, which rivaled anyone's, including Bowie's and the Rolling Stones'. Mott is an album that endures because of Ian Hunter's songwriting and a production that was immediate, adventurous, full of the sensationalism of glam from a band that wasn't, and saturated in roots rock energy and grit. The use of a chorus of female backing vocalists, Andy Mackay (from Roxy Music) on saxophone, and the leaner, meaner, four-piece attack presented Mott the Hoople in all its glory, presented Hunter as a songwriter who needed to be taken very seriously. The album cracked the U.S. Top 40 (number 35), and hit the U.K.'s Top Ten (number seven at its peak). The Legacy reissue contains four bonus cuts, too – even though it's a tough to follow an act like "I Wish I Was Your Mother," which closes Mott. First is "Rose," the rare B-side of the "Honaloochie Boogie" single. Then there's a demo of the tune, that's rough, rowdy, and edgy. Ironically there is also a demo of Verden Allen's "Nightmare" written in 1972 that never made it onto an album. Finally, "Drivin' Sister," from the famed Hammersmith Odeon gig in 1972 on the All the Young Dudes tour, with some additional musicians in the mix including Morgan Fisher, Paul Buckmaster, and Andy Mackay. The bonus material showcases different sides of a band who had arrived, fully in command of their sound and performance. In addition to the great sound and bonus material, there are good historical and critical notes from Keith Smith, the editor of Two Miles From Heaven, the official organ of the Mott the Hoople Appreciation Society. Like All the Young Dudes, any fan will need this, but more importantly, anyone interested in the music of the early to mid-'70s will find Mott a treasure that can still hold its own over 30 years after its original release. It still sounds fresh, rough, and gritty, and is full of outrage and fantastic musical theater.

Mott The Hoople - Albums Collection 1969-2007 (16CD) [Re-Up]

Mott The Hoople - The Hoople (1974) Remastered 2006
EAC | FLAC | Image (Cue&Log) ~ 443 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 163 Mb
Label: Columbia/Legacy | # 82796978732 | Time: 01:09:06 | Scans included

Mott was so good that the sequel, appropriately named The Hoople, has been unfairly dismissed as not living up to the group's promise. Yes, it doesn't compare to its predecessor, but most records don't. The bigger problem is that Mick Ralphs chose to leave during the supporting tour for Mott, leaving Ian Hunter as the undisputed leader of the group and subtly changing the character of the band's sound. Even with Hunter as Mott the Hoople's main songwriter, Ralphs helped shape their musical direction, so without a collaborator in hand, Hunter was left without a center. So, it isn't surprising that the record seems a little uneven, both in terms of songwriting and sound, but it's hardly without merit. "Roll Away the Stone," a leftover from Mott, is first-rate; "Crash Street Kidds" rocks viciously; "The Golden Age of Rock & Roll" is a pleasant spin on Bowie-esque nostalgia (think "Drive-In Saturday"); and Overend Watts follows through on that theme with "Born Late '58," a perfectly credible rocker. This all makes The Hoople an entertaining listen, even if it doesn't compare to Mott's earlier masterpieces. [A 2004 reissue via Sony International included the bonus tracks "Where Do You All Come From?," "Rest in Peace," and "Foxy Foxy."]

Mott The Hoople - Albums Collection 1969-2007 (16CD) [Re-Up]

Mott The Hoople - Live (1974) 2CDs, 30th Anniversary Edition 2004
EAC | FLAC | Tracks (Cue&Log) ~ 902 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 286 Mb
Label: Sony/Columbia | # 516051 2 | Time: 02:05:05 | Scans included

Three long decades after the fact, what was once the least impressive album in the entire Mott the Hoople catalog reappears as one of the most significant live albums of the 1970s. A revelation in concert, Mott were nevertheless poorly served by their first (and, for many years, only) live album, as the original plan for a double was swallowed up by corporate nerves and instead emerged a brutally edited single disc, comprising a mere handful of oddly chosen highlights (two hit singles, two non-album B-sides, a nearly side-long medley). It was a disappointment at the time and, as further archival live performances leaked out of the vault during the 1990s and early 2000s, so Live sank even further back in the fans' estimation. But the 30th anniversary edition catapults it firmly to the fore, two magnificently mastered discs not only adding 13 unreleased performances to the original album's eight tracks, but also capturing two legendary concerts nearly in their entirety: the late-1973 Hammersmith show, where the set over-ran so long that the theater owners lowered the safety curtain on the band (keyboard player Morgan Fisher blocked it with his piano); and a taste of the group's triumphant Broadway season six months later. Of these, the effect of the latter might be diminished by the existence of Two Miles from Live Heaven, with its recounting of another gig (Santa Monica) from the same tour – there is little variation between the two shows, and the California night may actually be a shade more exciting. But still, Broadway found Mott at the peak of their powers and, with the London disc proving equally sensational, the overall weight of the package renders this the one Mott live package that everyone needs to hear. A lot of people, after all, regard them among the most important bands that ever lived. Live: 30th Anniversary Edition tells you why.

Mott The Hoople - Albums Collection 1969-2007 (16CD) [Re-Up]

Mott The Hoople - Rock And Roll Queen (1974)
EAC | FLAC | Tracks (Cue&Log) ~ 236 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 112 Mb
Label: Atlantic | # 7297-2 | Time: 00:35:39 | Scans included

Originally released in the U.K. during the first flurry of excitement following Mott the Hoople's 1972 breakthrough, Rock and Roll Queen is both an excellent introduction to the group's pre-"All the Young Dudes" background, and a vivid portrait of why it took them so long to actually make it. Just four of the eight tracks are what one would consider truly representative of Mott's early powers – the title track, of course, the claustrophobic hard rockers "Walking With a Mountain" and "Thunderbuck Ram," and the grinding "Death May Be Your Santa Claus." The remainder can be summed up either as novelty fragments ("The Wheel of the Quivering Meat Conception"), entertaining throwaways (an instrumental cover of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" and the non-album "Midnight Lady"), or live spacefillers – eight minutes of Little Richard's "Keep a Knocking" were out of place enough on the otherwise sublime Wildlife album. They have no business whatsoever on a putative best-of. But it is that very inconsistency which made the original albums the minor/ignored classics they undoubtedly were – Bowie, after all, gave the band more than a major hit single; he also introduced discipline and order to the ranks, focusing vocalist Ian Hunter on a role as leader, and reminding him that even democracies need some kind of game plan. After Bowie, Mott albums were focused tight as a drum. Before him, they sprawled all over the place, and Rock and Roll Queen sprawls with them. Indeed, that might even be why it continues to occupy such a resolute place in the heart of the true fan, long after both its contents and its purposes have been superseded by subsequent anthologies. There is nothing here which cannot be as easily obtained elsewhere, with even the once super-rare "Midnight Lady," a Shadow Morton production conceived as a between-albums 45, now as familiar as any of its stablemates. But Rock and Roll Queen lives on regardless, the first Mott the Hoople compilation and, for all its brevity, faults, and idiosyncrasies, still one of the most breathtaking. This band knew no fear.

Mott The Hoople - Albums Collection 1969-2007 (16CD) [Re-Up]

Mott The Hoople - Drive On (1975)
EAC | FLAC | Tracks (Cue&Log) ~ 276 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 100 Mb
Label: Wounded Bird Records | # WOU 3705 | Time: 00:42:26 | Scans included

Few bands have a sadder coda than Mott the Hoople. Top of their game for three glorious years, one of the U.K.'s best-loved bands for six, the group should have come to a grinding halt the moment frontman Ian Hunter walked out. They'd lost key members before, of course: organist Verden Allen, who composed one of the finest songs in the band's entire repertoire, the churning "Soft Ground"; guitarists Mick Ralphs and Ariel Bender, both of whom drove the group to distinctly different, but similarly spellbinding peaks during their years of lieutenanthood. But Hunter was different. Not only did he sing the majority of the songs, he wrote them as well, while his public image – long fizzy hair, omnipresent shades – was so universally well-known that, to many onlookers (the staunchest fans included), he WAS Mott the Hoople. Rhythm section Overend Watts and Bufin, and latter-day keyboard player Morgan Fisher felt otherwise. Recruiting two unknowns to fill the void (guitarist Mick Ronson departed with Hunter) and abbreviating the band name to its most recognizable syllable, the trio began work on a new album almost immediately – and one still wonders what was really going on in their minds. Of the five, only Watts had any songwriting experience to call upon; indeed, his "Born Late 58" was one of the highlights of 1974's The Hoople album. But any hopes that he might blossom à la an ex-Beatles George Harrison, or post-Vince Clarke Martin Gore were soon to crumble. The best songs (the first 45, "Monte Carlo," the driving "It Takes One to Know One") have absolutely nothing to do with the Hoopling of old; the worst (pretty much the rest of the record) are those which admit that fact. Mott emerged a dour, dry little record, its contents content to scour the rockiest edges of the old band's charm, but with none of the humor, none of the élan, and certainly none of the temperamental flash which made the original band so special. And to think, this was only their first album.

A petty little package this is, and no mistake. It was no secret, of course, that the end of Mott the Hoople was a rancorous, bitter affair. But while former frontman Ian Hunter was igniting his solo career with an album of songs which could have been Mott's, did his erstwhile bandmates truly have nothing better to occupy their time with than compiling a collection which not only skews all that they really achieved during three years of hits, but also undermines those who played on them as well? True, guitarist Mick Ronson was a member of the band for a mere matter of months before he split for a new band with Hunter; true, too, that his contributions to Mott's recorded catalog amounted to just one minor hit single, the spookily valedictory "Saturday Gigs." But to see his name in the same tiny print reserved for the session players who appear elsewhere revises history with semi-Stalinist zeal – or at least, spitefulness. So, though it now seems equally petty to suggest it, did the inclusion of "Born Late 58," written by one of the Hooplers who stayed behind (bassist Overend Watts), in place of any one of a dozen more deserving moments – all of which, of course, were penned by the errant Hunter. Oh, the politics of pop, how important they all seemed at the time. Today, of course, Greatest Hits exists as a mere prelude to the flood of Mott compilations which have since hit the shelves, and one whose ten-song contents seem impossibly skimpy – you can be in and out of the album in under 40 minutes. But, in fairness, that was all that was demanded of it. Each of the band's U.K. hits is here, including two ("Foxy Foxy" and the aforementioned "Saturday Gigs") which, at the time, had yet to appear on LP, while two slabs of unabashedly autobiography from the Mott album and one more from The Hoople basically appear as bonus tracks. Sharp and to the point – would that all compilations could make their mark so unerringly!

Mott The Hoople - Albums Collection 1969-2007 (16CD) [Re-Up]

Mott The Hoople - Two Miles From Heaven (1980) Remastered 2003
EAC | FLAC | Tracks (Cue&Log) ~ 343 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 129 Mb
Label: Angel Air Records | # SJPCD161 | Time: 00:56:27 | Scans ~ 48 Mb

Although it has been largely, if not entirely, superceded by the wealth of other exhumations made since the mid-'90s, Two Miles from Heaven retains its place in Mott the Hoople fanatics' hearts, not only because it was their first trip into the archive, but also because it remains the best. Drawing from the three years and four albums that Mott spent with Island Records, and compiled by bandmember Buffin, the album concentrates on material that would at least sound familiar to passing purchasers. It has alternate takes on three tracks destined for the breakthrough All the Young Dudes album: a tumultuous version of "Thunderbuck Ram," a studio take on the live standout "Keep a Knocking," and a vocal rendition of the instrumental "You Really Got Me." There's a welcome appearance for the 1969 B-side, "The Road to Birmingham," while the Angel Air remaster also consolidates every different version of the original album released around the world during the early '80s. Different territories saw tracks added and removed, but all 15 songs intended for the 1981 release are here, plus two more that the constraints of the original vinyl would not allow – further non-LP flips "The Debt" and "Downtown." Not every track stands as the band left them. Bassist Pete Watts made a few repairs to his own parts, while latter-day associates Morgan Fisher and Ray Majors both added some overdubs to "complete" a few numbers. The slide guitar solo scything through "Black Scorpio" (aka "Mother's Little Jewel") is actually one of Majors' contributions, and is a tribute to the overseer that such a glaring addition really doesn't get noticed unless you know about it. The remastering is superb, and the booklet is a mine of information (something that was distinctly lacking from the original release). No matter, then, that so much of this album has been recycled elsewhere. The original remains the greatest.

Mott The Hoople - Albums Collection 1969-2007 (16CD) [Re-Up]

Mott The Hoople - The Ballad Of Mott: A Retrospective (1993) 2CD
EAC | FLAC | Tracks (Cue&Log) ~ 860 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 350 Mb

Although it was subsequently rendered academic by the release of the All the Young Dudes box set, Ballad of Mott would stand proud as the finest Mott the Hoople collection on the market for close to five years – and, in many ways, it remains so. The emphasis is on the band's years at the top, the 1972-74 period when they machine gunned out hit singles, at the same time as operating a virtual revolving door for guitarists. Mick Ralphs, Ariel Bender, and Mick Ronson all filed through the band during that period, and all three left some startling classics behind them – the tasteful effervescence of "All the Young Dudes," "Violence," and "Whizz Kid" (Ralphs); the playful flash of "Roll Away the Stone," "Crash Street Kids," and "Golden Age of Rock'n'Roll" (Bender); the majestic sobriety of "Saturday Gigs" and "Lounge Lizard" – both present here in previously unreleased form (Ronson). Of course all the hit singles are aboard, together with four well-chosen cuts from the band's years with Island/Atlantic in the days before fame came knocking. There's also some meaty rarities above and beyond the aforementioned – the jokey "Henry & the H Bombs," recorded during the Dudes sessions with producer David Bowie, a version of The Hoople's masterful "Through the Looking Glass," which dissolves midway through into an utterly unexpected barrage of invective; and the opening verse of Don McLean's "American Pie," with which Mott introduced their 1974 era tours. Add a clutch of U.K. B-sides (nothing spectacular, but nice to have), and a generous dose of primo album cuts and, while The Ballad of Mott did draw some criticism from a Mott fanbase which was hoping for even more vault-exhuming lovelies, in terms of truly telling the story, it's a peerless collection. Yes, even more so than the box set.

Mott The Hoople - Albums Collection 1969-2007 (16CD) [Re-Up]

Mott The Hoople - Fairfield Halls, Live 1970 (2007) Remastered

Prior to the release of the (at the time, disappointing) Live album in 1974, the only officially available record of Mott the Hoople's live prowess was one track tacked onto the end of 1971's Wildlife album, a protracted take on "Keep a Knockin'" that was, apparently, the only salvageable cut from a projected full live album. The rest, producer Guy Stevens insisted, was so marred by technical problems as to be unusable. However, 36 years later listeners would discover that Stevens was a lot of things, but – at least on this occasion – he wasn't necessarily honest. Fairfield Halls, Live 1970 captures the full concert, from the tumultuous opening "Ohio," all ragged guitars and Verden Allen's foreboding organ, through a dynamite "Rock and Roll Queen" and three slabs from the then-forthcoming Mad Shadows, and on to the closing oldies, "Keep a Knockin'" and "You Really Got Me." And, alongside the Fillmore tapes recorded earlier in the year, at last the true magic of the original Mott the Hoople has been unleashed, a rock band that could have redefined "rock" if only more breaks had gone its way. Less exciting, but filling up the disc regardless, five tracks recorded five months later in Sweden (and previously available on the same label's All the Way from Stockholm to Philadelphia: Live 71/72 set) repeat "Thunderbuck Ram" but do add a Himalayan "Walkin' with a Mountain," "Laugh at Me," and "The Original Mixed Up Kid" to the brew, plus a volcanic cover of Mountain's "Long Red" that will leave you reeling. As if the rest of the disc hasn't already battered you hard enough.
