allmusic.com biography: Named after a legendary Southern prostitute who allegedly beheaded and mutilated her clients, Jacksonville's Molly Hatchet meld loud hard rock boogie with guitar jam-oriented Southern rock. Formed in 1975, the group's original lineup featured three guitarists – Dave Hlubek, Steve Holland, and Duane Roland – plus vocalist Danny Joe Brown, bassist Banner Thomas, and drummer Bruce Crump. They recorded a self-titled debut album in 1978, which quickly went platinum; the follow-up, Flirtin' with Disaster, was even more successful, selling over two million copies. Brown left the group in 1980 after the constant touring became too tiresome; he was replaced by Jimmy Farrar for Beatin' the Odds, but Farrar's voice was less immediately identifiable, and Molly Hatchet's commercial appeal began a slow decline. The band experimented with horns on Take No Prisoners, but Farrar left for a solo career soon afterwards. Brown rejoined the band in 1982, but the ensuing album, No Guts…No Glory, flopped, and guitarist Hlubek insisted on revamping Molly Hatchet's sound.

With obvious influences including fellow Floridians Lynyrd Skynyrd, as well as the Allman Brothers, Mountain, and any number of other hard rock bands, Hatchet didn't take long to catch on with what would become legions of fans. Songs like "Bounty Hunter" and the cover of the Allman Brothers Band's "Dreams I'll Never See" helped to build a solid base of fans who still hold tight to their Molly Hatchet rock & roll dreams. All in all, a splendid debut album from a band that, in true Southern fashion, has had its share of ups and downs. And Danny Joe Brown proves that he is a singer to be reckoned with.

allmusic.com says: By the time Flirtin' with Disaster reached stores, the Hatchet were already bona fide forces to be reckoned with on the Southern rock circuit, with a fan base nearly on par with contemporaries like Skynyrd and the Allmans (who they covered on their eponymous debut LP). With a Frank Frazetta album cover that clearly sent a message that the band means business – the business of hard partying and equally as hard rocking – Flirtin' with Disaster is a 40-minute tour de force spearheaded by a triple guitar attack and the raspy thrillbilly growl of Danny Joe Brown. The album slowly builds from "Whiskey Man" into the classic soul rocker "It's All over All Now" and peaks with the brilliant title track – largely considered by many to be Hatchet's finest moment committed to analog tape. It's a hard driving rock record, plain and simple with no frills or lofty concepts. Just ten songs designed to keep rocking until the sun comes up over the Florida swamplands. allmusic.com says: With a change of lead vocalist (Danny Joe Brown replaced by Jimmy Farrar), Molly Hatchet seems to lose a bit of its fire, although "Beatin' the Odds" went on to make a favorable showing on classic rock radio. With only a couple of standout tracks, notably the title track and "Penthouse Pauper," the sound that the band had worked so hard to attain seems to have undergone more obvious changes than just the swapping of a lead singer. Still, a handful of high points here are sure to please the die-hard Molly Hatchet fan.

Still, the band doesn't seem able to recreate the intensity of its first couple of releases. "Respect Me in the Morning" appears to start off a set of powerful Hatchet tunes, but the ball gets fumbled halfway into the game.

allmusic.com says: With Danny Joe Brown's return as frontman, Molly Hatchet experienced a return to the powerful sound that was so prevalent on its debut effort. Dave Hlubek once again pulls out all the stops with searing guitar riffs and power chords that at times evoke images of the best Lynyrd Skynyrd record, while at other times letting his guitar underscore Brown's vocals in a hard rock vein reminicent of Mountain or early Grand Funk Railroad. A lot of the power here comes from the addition of former Mother's Finest drummer Barry Borden into the lineup. Choice tracks include "Fall of the Peacemakers," "On the Prowl," and "Sweet Dixie." Former Grinderswitch axeman Dru Lumbar adds even more excitement to an otherwise fine record.
