    Funk / R'n'B / Soul / Funky Jam

'BODYHEAT' was originally released in December 1976 as Polydor-1-6093 in a striking jacket illustrated by Virginia Team. The title cut's single release was his last highest charting single (#13 R&B) until "Living In America" in 1985 (#4 Pop, #10 R&B). A clavinet based funk-er, it features a steadier beat somewhere between his usual funk and straight disco. In fact the back cover of the album announced "James Brown - Brand New Sound." Surprisingly, the rest of the original album's Side One consisted of two ballads, the almost four years stale "It's A Man's, Man's World" retread "Woman," and the much better "Kiss In '77" which deserved more than it's #35 R&B showing. Brown seemed to favor the atypically restrained ballad, featuring it in his concerts for years after it's release.

The original Side Two began with the oft-sampled funky mover "I'm Satisfied," followed by a so-so disco-fied cover of Bacharach and David's "What The World Need's Now." It's tepid tracks like this that killed disco. Ex-review member and paramour Vicki Anderson's 1969 single of the standard outdoes her former boss's by a mile or ten. The next track, "Wake Up And Give Yourself A Chance To Live" is a decent but run-of-the-mill slab of '70's soul, dated by the ARP string synthesizer backing. Brown's re-imagined version, "People Wake Up And Live," released the following year, fares somewhat better. James ties it up by going back to the funk well for the laid-back "Don't Tell It" another sampler's favorite which exists in a much more enjoyable eight-minute version that allows the listener to "get their groove on." It's quick fade at the end is a real letdown as is the album after it's much stronger predecessor 'GET UP OFFA THAT THING.' As with many of his releases around this time, if you're a stone fan you can pick this up fairly cheap if you browse around (cdjapan $9.12 + postage). Others might want to stick to some of the terrific compilations out there.
