The set of works performed by The Academy of Ancient Music and the Christ Church Cathedral Choir is a collectable treasure of fairly minor choral works by Handel and Haydn. Of course, nothing by Handel or Haydn is REALLY minor, it just doesn't get performed as much as Messiah. These works don't come across and theatrical tour de forces. Instead they are articulate, meditative at times, church works. In the case of Handel to celebrate specific occasions.
Haydn: Missa Brevis in F major
The work is scored or two sopranos, chorus, strings with organ. Hogwood uses a VERY small string orchestra. The highlight here are the sections of soprano duets with Judith Nelson and Emma Kirkby. As wonderful as Dame Kirkby is, and as far as that voice took her, she never sounded sweeter than when performing duets with Judith Nelson. She and Ms. Nelson appeared together on Hogwood's fabulous, bar setting version of Messiah. Ms. Nelson has an articulate soprano voice that at times sounds angelic. The choir is spot on, never powerful, but worshipful and pleasant. The use of boy trebles achieves a traditional sound that, while not full or lush, is fully satisfying for this kind of church music.
Handel: Anthem for the Founding Hospital & Ode of the birthday of Queen Anne
Handel was a major benefactor of the Foundling Hospital, London's first home for abandoned children. The composer's benefit concerts for the hospital raised thousands of pounds. Messiah being the most famous of those works. The Foundling Hospital Anthem was performed as a benefit to help complete its chapel. Written in 1749, the work is the last of Handel's pieces written for special occasions. The text is mostly drawn from the Psalms. Again, the choir and most of the soloists performed admirably, with the exception of Tenor, Martin Hill. The most anemic, lame sounding performance by a soloist on any recording with Christopher Hogwood I've ever listened to. It isn't that he is out of tune or technical wrong. He just doesn't seem to have any energy or conviction in his singing, which stands out from the other performers like a sore thumb. I would say Hogwood was a bit of the cause here. This is early Hogwood L'Oiseau Lure/Florilegium. And he just had not made the transition from music historian and harpsichordist to fully matured conductor quite yet. These kind of works by Handel need the speed, the bite, and the energy. Beautiful, but not quite breathtaking.
The Queen Anne Ode is a solemn piece, again, a real pleasure to listen to, but not exactly a memorable showstopper. If you are a fan of Hogwood, as am I, this is a must have CD. Nothing he ever did is a complete wash, and this collection a far cry from it. This is Vintage Hogwood. Call it "Early Original Instrument." K. Brown
