Classical / Medieval / Early Music

Medieval music is not my customary listening or studying turf, and I can't claim any cognoscento's insight. I'm a pure layman here, I don't know how "authentic" or musicologically satisfying those 1977 readings by Ensemble Guillaume de Machaut are, or how they compare interpretively with others. As for authenticity, other than giving the names of the instruments used, the credits and liner notes provide no information whatsoever about them. For instance, the instrument called "cromorne" is listed, but according to Wikipedia the cromorne was a 16th and 17th century instrument of the oboe family, which makes it two or three centuries too late for Machaut. But probably what Ensemble Guillaume de Machaut plays here is not the baroque instrument but the crumhorn, an instrument first attested it seems in the 15th century but often associated with earlier Medieval times. Another instrument, often playing in duet with the cromorne, is the bombard, apparently a specifically Breton instrument again of the oboe family (Machaut was born and lived in Champagne, some 600 kilometers away). Not that it matters (to me). What you hear are two nasal-sounding, kazooish reed instruments of the oboe and bassoon family, and it sounds medieval enough to my untrained ears. The other instruments include lute, arab lute, Moorish guitar, recorder and transverse flute, vielle and rebec ("a bowed string musical instrument. In its most common form, it has a narrow boat-shaped body and 1-5 strings and is played on the arm or under the chin, like a violin. It is also an ancestor of the violin"), portative organ, various drums and tambourines. They provide for a welcome diversity of timbres and accompaniments.

But, authentic or not, what matters is that, as already mentioned, the music is lovely, ballads alternating between sorrowful/nostalgic and gently merry, sometimes sung by two countertenors, the excerpts from "Le Remède de Fortune" by a high-pitched tenor and sometimes spoken by him (Machaut viewed himself as a poet even more than a composer and "Remède de Fortune" is first and foremost a long poem). Track 10 starts with a long spoken description of an array of instruments seen by the poet - great historical documentation! The music is enrapturing and appeasing. I enjoyed greatly this hour of music, and I would have gladly listened to one more. The only drawback is that the CD does not provide the texts of what is sung - it is Medieval French, so even a French speaker gets only a vague notion of the meaning of the words. But hearing the old-French pronunciation and rhymes provides an added felicity.
