Grigoris Bithikotsis, was the greater singer that has ever passed from the greek musical scene. He was the "standard choice" for the most important works of Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hadjidakis and Stavros Xarhakos, the three top greek composers of all times. Bithikotsis was also a talented songwriter with lots of best selling personal albums. Many timeless folk songs are his compositions. This multi-platinum album released in 1968, contains some legendary songs of Bithikotsis, that remain popular till today, after all these years. Enjoy a superb CD.

Grigoris Bithikotsis (Greek Γρηγόρης Μπιθικώτσης; December 11, 1922 - April 7, 2005) was a popular Greek folk singer/songwriter with a career spanning five decades. Bithikotsis was born in Peristeri, Athens, in 1922 to a poor family. He became interested in music at an early age, and acquired a bouzouki as soon as he was able. At first, he had to hide the instrument at a friend's house and practice in secret, as his father disapproved of the new rembetiko style that had captured his son's interest. He met composer Mikis Theodorakis in 1959 and the two collaborated producing folk songs. Bithikotsis composed over 80 songs, including: Stu Belami to ouzeri and Toy Votanikou o magas. He possessed a rich singing voice with which he performed his own compositions and those of Theodorakis, who frequently chose his friend Grigoris to perform his masterpieces. The two contributed greatly to the then-emerging laika style of Greek music. A leftist, he was exiled to the island of Makronisos in the 1950s during the reign of King Paul. Throughout his life, Bithikotsis performed frequent concerts at numerous venues, including one in Athens upon the occasion of his eightieth birthday. He died in Athens, in 2005, following 3 months of hospitalization. His funeral was attended by thousands, including representatives of all the Greek political parties.

The great performer was loved by all Greeks and his voice was associated with significant moments in contemporary Greek music history. One of these moments was the uprising of the students of Athens against the Greek Junta. Grigoris Bithikotsis prevailed as the top popular artist in the Greek music scene for twenty years (1950-1970), both as a composer, as well as a singer. His first collaboration with Mikis Theodorakis for the work "Epitaphios" revolutionized Greek music and established him as one of the greatest figures of his era, while it opened the way to some of the most popular music halls in Athens. In 2002, the President of the Hellenic Republic, Kostis Stefanopoulos, awarded him the Phoenix Golden Cross for his overall contribution to Greek culture. In March of the same year, the Greek Ministry of Culture awarded him an honourary plaque, while it also organized a concert dedicated to him, during which many musicians and singers performed his songs.
