Violinist Fenella Humphreys brings you a new album with Rubicon Classics after her 2023 BBC Magazine Premiere Award-winning album ‘Caprices’. Fenella brings a unique programme called ‘Prism’, which focuses on unaccompanied violin works. These consist of new works written by young British composers such as Michael Small, Bethan Morgan-Williams and Cheryl Frances-Hoad to more iconic contemporary works by British and American compoosers such as Caroline Shaw, Jessie Montgomery, George Walker and the wonderful Sir Peter Maxwell Davies!

As both musician and composer the violin was central to Sibelius’s career, and his output for the instrument spans much of his long life. Acclaimed violinist Fenella Humphreys and celebrated pianist Joseph Tong explore a tantalizing program of Sibelius’s music, from the youthful Andante cantabile in G major composed in 1887, through Opp. 78 and 81, written in the midst of the First World War, to his last works for the instrument – Four Pieces, Op. 115 and Three Pieces, Op. 116 both penned in 1929. Completing the program are the five Danses champêtres, Op. 106 from 1924–5.

A fascinating and eclectic collection of caprices ranging from Paganini to a wide selection of contemporary composers, some of whom contribute not only individual works, but who joined together for a splendid composite set of variations on Paganini’s famous 24th caprice. Already hailed as his country's foremost composer, Sibelius completed what was to be his only concerto in early 1904, and its spellbinding and instantly recognisable opening can surely be counted amongst the most iconic of any. A virtuosic violinist himself, Sibelius beautifully evokes Finland's natural landscape and ancient folklore, which continues through Sibelius's 1917 work for violin and orchestra – the Six Humoresques – demanding a considerable level of technique. Violinist Fenella Humphreys joins with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and conductor George Vass to present these formidable works with a world premiere recording of a new work for violin and orchestra by the American composer Nors S. Josephson – Celestial Voyage.
