Ethos‘ 1976 prog album ‘Ardour‘ is an audacious, cosmic journey filled with layered synth-fronts, 12-string dreamscapes, and a solid Rickenbacker rhythm section that echoes Starcastle while evoking the finest of Genesis and Yes without being a direct imitation. Released in the twilight years of the prog era, it‘s an irresistibly charming record, blending razor-cut progressive artistry with naively fantastical concepts, a delight for any prog fan willing to dive into its cosmos of soundtrack-like melodies and whimsical lyrics.

ETHOS is a symphonic rock band formed in '73 based on THE SENTUIRES/THE HERD/ATLANTIS, which was active in the 60's, and represents American progressive rock in the 70's along with KANSAS and STARCASTLE. ETHOS released their debut album on CapitolRecords in 1976, and it was reissued on CD by Paisley Press in '23! The band is from the U.S.A., but their fantastic symphonic rock sound with a European flavor, which skillfully incorporates ethereal mellotron and acoustic guitar into the arrangements, is still being discussed among prog rock enthusiasts. The sound image of this album is a combination of the descriptive ability that gives a sense of wet lyricism/story comparable to YES and GENESIS, technical interplay and a large sense of scale that is typical of American music, and the ability to compose detailed music that consistently and with extraordinary concentration, The soundscape is a combination of the best of British and American progressive rock, and is rich in originality.The first track, "Intrepid Traveller," is already a mass of unexpected developments, with the soaring mog synths, the vocal harmonies that softly play catchy melodies, the flute that seems to be enveloped in fog, the humorous percussion decorations, and the way the sonic elements, which might otherwise only fight with each other, vaguely share the same vector and form a single song. The way in which these sonic elements, which could only quarrel with each other, vaguely share the same vector and form a single piece of music is something to be admired. The sound production is also excellent, as the album was released on a major label at the time. It is not too much to say that this album is a masterpiece that symbolizes the progressive/symphonic rock scene not only in the U.S. but also in the 70's.
