Classical / Symphonies
Karl Böhm's Beethoven is, on balance, the best complete cycle available from Deutsche Grammophon. This will come as a surprise to many, given the fact that the label relentlessly promotes performances by Herbert von Karajan (three complete cycles!) and Leonard Bernstein, but for quality of playing, as well as superb sound, these versions are just about unbeatable. And at a "twofer" price, the complete set on three pairs of discs is a terrific value. –David Hurwitz
As with the CD with symphonies 1,2,4 and 5 (see my review of this set), this is a superlative CD. The highlights are the wonderful sound recording quality plus Bohm's strong and meaty delivery of these symphonies. If I could characterize, I would say this is a very powerful and muscular performance of these symphonies in that the modern orchestral forces are used by Bohm in a 'in your face' manner. This leads to a powerful and no holds barred reading. Also there is no fiddling around by the engineers in artificially muting or jacking up sound frequencies. This leads to a natural powerful concert stage sound. You can hear the clarinet with as much volume and clarity as the string section. Timpani is beautifully captured in this recording as discrete and well-formed pulses of sound with clear intonation instead of smudges of sound in some other recordings. For me this CD set probably has best 6th ever put on disk, both in terms of the art of conducting and in terms of the art of sound recording. Every note is heard - nothing is eaten up. Each note is distinct & clear, a note starts here and ends there - sonic clarity. Resolute tempi & robust unashamed orchestral grandeur!

Symphony 6: A clear and beautiful rendition. Probably the best sound recording quality of the 6th that I have. Completely satisfying 'Awakening of cheerful feelings upon arrival in the country'. The beautiful pastoral tempi and rendition of the 'Scene at the brook' literally puts me near a brook. The oboe and Clarinet are so perfectly clear with the beautiful string section in this movement. All movements are played with brilliance and the reading is magnificient and grand. No recording of the 6th I have listened to till now provides me with the sense of clarity and mental imagery that goes with the 6th. The best ever 6th.

Symphony 7: The 2nd movement (Allegretto) is conducted and performed so brilliantly here, it's pure bliss; the last movement (Allegro con brio) is read with gusto and swagger. Lovely synchronistic playing by the orchestra.
Symphony 8: In the first movement, the string plays the first movement with the great pizazz and folksy twang; A robust and sturdy reading of the second movement (Allegretto scherzando)follows. Kudos to the recording engineers for not meddling with the volume of the delicate string phrasing and pizzicato in the third movement (in the minuet tempo). To close this symphony, an orchestral rich rendition of the 4th movement - Allegro Vivace, the icing on the cake. In this movement, the section where the clarinet gets the solo, you can still listen to the quite motoring away of the lower strings. I never heard that in my other recordings I possess of this symphony.
The reading of all three symphonies are just top of the line. The added overtures are just an extra super bonus. At the cost of repeating myself, the BEST EVER Beethoven 6th EVER put to disk. At 15 bucks, this 2 CD set is a keeper.
