Liberation is the fourth studio album by American blues singer-songwriter ZZ Ward. It was released on March 14, 2025, via Dirty Shine and Sun Records. The album follows the release of Ward's third studio album Dirty Shine and extended play, Mother, and includes four out of six tracks from the EP. The album is produced by Ryan Spraker, who also produced Mother. Liberation was met with critical acclaim from blues rock media outlets and music critics alike, who deemed it as a triumphant rebirth from the singer to her blues roots. Blues Rock Magazine awarded the album with a 9 out of an average rating of 10, with music critic Allan Claudio calling it "an amazing soundtrack to her life experiences". He also praised Ward's vocal performance, which Claudio described it as "filled with power and determination".
Liberation is the new LP from blues artist ZZ Ward, celebrating her love of all things blues. Her third release on Sun Records, this album joins her originals, like “Mother,” a song about her new role as a working mother, with covers of classics like Son House’s “Grinnin’ In Your Face.” ZZ’s bold vocals shine on her take on songs from the historic Sun catalog as well, like The Jesters’ “Cadillac Man” and Alvin Robinson’s “Something You Got.” Artist Bio ZZ Ward started singing blues at age 8, driven by her father's record collection. By 16, she was a fixture in local Eugene clubs, merging blues and hip-hop. After hustling for gigs and selling demos, she got a record deal with a major label and rocketed to stardom, achieving a Top 40 Billboard hit with her debut. The singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and now video director, record label owner, milliner, and new mom is enjoying an outpouring of creativity. ZZ is making ambitious mini-movies for her songs with her filmmaker brother, Adam Ward (Parole Officers, Bad Advice), living out her high-concept, action-packed, and ultra-chic cinematic fantasies. She is hand-making versions of her signature fedoras available for purchase via her website. Removing the big corporation has also put ZZ closer to her fans and her family. Every morning ZZ chats with her community directly. Being ZZ Ward has also become a family affair; besides ZZ’s collaborations with her brother, her label and her management is a partnership with her longtime collaborator and husband, GRAMMY-winning songwriter Evan Kidd Bogart. Adding to the sweetness of this time is the fact that ZZ and her husband have just welcomed their firstborn.
