There is ALOT to sort through on this set, and only a true fan (for instance- who remembers getting Yessongs for Christmas when it came out) may want to tackle this. But heck- Phish and Dead fans pour over every detail from every show that's released, so why not Yes fans? It is a stunning set of music- warts and all. Hearing the parts that are improvisational develop over the course of the set is fascinating. Listening to Wakeman hone his "Excerpts" is revelatory (You can hear him struggle with his piano being out of tune on one version). Even Howe manages to create variations on his solo spot. I have yet to identify all the "source code" takes from Yessongs except for the "Athens" (apparently mislabeled) "Yours is No Disgrace"- and even then one can hear the extra editing that was done to the take to take out some "rough" spots.

It is nice to hear how the band REALLY sounded- warts and all- because on the whole- the "warts" are remarkably few considering the complexity of the music (the audacity of the first 4 minutes of CTTE is astounding)- it makes the series of shows even more remarkable for the human quality of performances.

Regrettably- if I had a complaint it would be that Chris Squire is actually a little further back in the mix than I would have expected. I was really looking forward to digging into his performances and I have to struggle occasionally to hear him. Considering his very recent diagnosis of Leukemia, I had really looked forward to these shows as I had been listening to other work (Wilson "CTTE" remixes and "Fish Out of Water ") where he is way up front as he should be).

That quibble aside- the lifting of the veil on so much of Wakeman and Howes playing more than makes up for it. The overall sound is far revelatory. If you have always believed Yessongs was the ultimate live testament of the band, then this is the set for you!
